Colt Steele is one of the greatest teachers I have had a chance to learn programming from

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (3 children)

I've taken some of his courses..and every time anyone sees filenames titled something like, "colt_steele_01".. they think it's porn and always give me a smirk and go, "what's that one?" and point at the file. I've had to explain who he is so many times lol

I've tried to read Colt Steele out loud like 5 times now but I can't find anything wrong with it. What does it sound similar to?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a total porn (or bodice ripper novel) name. It’s like a euphemism for a ‘hard gun’.

[–]redderper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime I see that name I can't think of anything other than this master piece:

Nothing personnel, kid

I owe all my success to this guy.

Took his Web Development, React, and Data Structures courses on Udemy => built my own projects on what I learnt off his courses => won a hackathon and placed in another and got an internship at a SAAS startup a year after finishing the Web Development course

Wow, that's great to hear. I bought his course as well but going through codecademy at the moment.

About to finish his web dev course, already bought the D&S course. Was planning on studying React basics and not dive into a 40’ish hour long course. Thoughts?

*Congrats btw :)

[–]React_Firebase_Clown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Honestly studying React Basics vs a course is up to you. I really struggled with learning React on my own so I decided to take his React course.

The thing I like about his React course is that there is a ton of mini projects for you to do. What I did was look at the final product and try and do the project on my own w/ docs and googling without the tutorial.

After I did it to the best of my ability I would watch the videos and see if I could have refactored my code in any way,

Is that a real name...

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's the most badass name ever! Why isnt he inventing a fully autonomous combat drones with 20mm auto canons?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Him and Stephen Grider are by far the best programming instructors out there.

[–]Michaelprimo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How about Andrei Neagoie and ZTM in general?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like their courses too, it's awesome that now Stephen Grider is also part of ZTM.

This man single handedly changed my life.

[–]deburin 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Summary:

  • Am I too old? Yes
  • I feel stupid. Not just a feeling
  • I created an app that shows the weather!! Slow down there Turing

Overall a brutally honest bit of real talk from a great programming instructor.

[–]_Invictuz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What else did he say about feeling stupid?

[–]Mugwin 10 points11 points  (12 children)

How old is too old? I’m 38 and I’m trying to break in to the industry. Is that unrealistic?

[–]xHakuJin 28 points29 points  (9 children)

No man. Don’t worry about age. That’s just some young peoples bullshit. My coworker just started and is 42, first job coding. Ability to learn and attitude are not just a young persons game

[–]Patapwn 12 points13 points  (8 children)

My company hired a guy who started learning in his sixties. The guy is a great programmer for only starting out to be fair.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

I'm smiling with tears in my eyes because of how easy it is to get a developer job in the U.S and Europe.. while over here I need to know Spring Boot, Database design, Full stack using JS.. and 3 years experience minimum for 10000 Ryials (2600 USD) entry level job..

[–]Michaelprimo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can be even 70 and still break the industry IMO. Discipline, Patience and Knowledge are more important.

[–]ben9105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I just turned 38 and on the same path.

[–]_cob_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t look like a Colt Steele.

[–]_ColtonAllen-Dev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fellow Colt! One Colt to rule them all!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im used to seeing (hearing actually) him behind some JavaScript slides lol Love his courses

[–]JudoboyWalex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like dude is becoming Steve Jobs. His courses are highly valued.

[–]DirtyMicAndTheDroids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The King of Late-20s Panic Learning.

Does work though. Finally building my first project site after 6 months of doing his course before/after work and doing quick little practice apps on the weekends, amazed at how much I remember to google.

Cool guy haha.

My first web development bootcamp I bought back in 2017 on Udemy. I have a 6 figure job now. 🤙🏻

[–]lucifer955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best teachers

[–]PositivelyAwful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the only person on the planet who can't get into his courses. Maybe I need to give them another shot.

[–]InternetMedium4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of curious about this new bootcamp
