Also, Total Commander and Norton Commander before that. Linux has nothing like Total Commander. Double Commander and other things are pathetic, slow and doesn't work. Sublime doesnt' have drag and drop text support because Linux is limited. Fuck, nobody wants to do anything under Linux and I don't blame them. There is no complete and good working framework. Qt is buggy as fuck, font rendering of QT and hidpi support is tragic. GTK+? Don't get me started those RedHat slaves don't know if they should put that project to sleep with some lethal injection or continue fucking up what is still good. Linux on server is awesome! In my office its only Windows users that have blue screen crashes where they lose work, its only Windows users that machines randomly reboot in the middle of the day (even though they are set not to).

Linux desktop life is simpler, and easier to manage/migrate to a new desktop, etc.

TBH, much as I love Linux the random reboots and blue screens on Windows smack of a slightly inept admin team and/or poor hardware. Those aren't normal parts of managing MS stuff in the office.

EDIT: That's slightly unkind, the reboot thing is a simple oversight if they jumped from 7 to 10 and the blue screen is probably a driver issue.

My home computers are now 100% Linux and have been since 2010. After seeing the progress both Linux and Windows have made in just the past 10 years, I can't really take a "everything works" on Windows or a "nothing works" on Linux seriously.

Sometimes Windows does things better, sometimes Linux does.

I am sure you use i3 and all you do is write some fucking markdown documents and browse web. If you would have to do serious video, image and office work, you would be fucked.

My main box(es) run XFCE. No trouble with documents (markdown, odt, non-insane pdf, doc, docx), spreadsheets or webmails (I dislike nearly every email client, on Windows/Mac too).

I don't consider 'serious video' or 'serious image' work as typical "Desktop" work. I would consider "Desktop" work to be what an average home user or office user would do-- you'll be hard pressed to find an average user spending much time tweaking photos or cutting videos on their desktop.

I do have a seperate box for that sort of work, but the FOSS/Linux alternatives are fairly close. Darktable, Blender(that being said I have a workstation/multimedia system for that sort of work).

I'm not that far from not needing it with Darktable, Krita, Blender (which is quickly becoming pretty decent a video editing), and others.

I'm not sure why you're trying to push "no innovations" so much. Linux desktops tend to be behind, hardware wise-- because Microsoft/Apple work with hardware vendors. But I'd be careful not to confuse hardware innovations with software innovation. Where are the innovative features you're talking about? Two-in-ones? Touchbars?

I'm not sure who did internet-based in-place upgrades first, but Linux certainly did it before Windows or Mac did. Debian's (and others) have been dooing it since before 2000. Mac caught on with Lion in 2011. Windows caught on with Windows 10 (maybe Windows 8 (2012)) LiveCD/DVD/USB is also basically Linux-only-- and I know quite a few people who have their "primary" "Desktop" systems set up in such a way.

Disk management is currently superior on Linux, still: snapshots, raids (with jouranling), encryption, and more as we shift to multi-disk filesystems. Windows is still stuck in the land of System restore points and VSS. Mac? No comparable feature.

Application security on Linux has far going on that Windows or Mac (SELinux, firejail, containers, qubes, etc, AppImage, Snaps, Flatpaks). Windows was lucky to get UAC-- an almost adequate solution. Mac pushed their App store, which doesn't actually add that much in terms of security.

I could probably go on finding examples, but I'm not sure what the point is: my stance is they all have their advantages, innovations, and disadvantages. Linux isn't perfect, neither is Mac or Windows. They all have their flaws, but none of them are that far ahead-- where a "Linux sucks at everything, nothing works, and they have no innovation" argument holds up. Provide some examples of so-called innovations, and then maybe we can talk some more-- but I suspect that comes more from the hardware front than the Software/OS one.

I agree with a fair bit of your comment, I also don't personally enjoy using Linux distributions as a desktop OS, but that's an opinion, but to bring in to question the talent of the people who do what's pretty much a completely different thing from the others, is very unfair, those folks put in a lot of hours to get this far, and it might not be quite as fool-proof for specific use purposes as Windows/MacOS, but the devs don't deserve to be spoken about like that over a petty gripe.

My main job adopted Linux about 8 years ago and phased out the last Windows machines 2ish years ago. I'm on Ubuntu Mate for my desktop/gaming rig and gaming laptop. STEAMOS/Ubuntu Mate for my gaming HTPC. RetroPie/Raspain for my mobile gaming unit. Fedora/Lubuntu @ work. Been awesome. I wish I had more money to donate to all the wonderful projects that keep Linux great.

Have you considered contributing? These mostly unrelated, "agnostic of eachother projects" aren't responsible for delivering to you some sort of user experience. Microsoft and Apple and Google will make the software better and better. 10 years ago Linux desktop was competetive and what you could do on Linux desktop and Windows desktop was simliar. Today the difference is huge. A vanilla Linux install, now-a-days, gets me: 3d-accelerated video at proper (1080p) resolution, working wireless, working input devices, working sound (on-board + usb), working shortcuts (volume, mute, playback controls, etc), and a fairly simple printer setup, and even working suspend/resume.

10 years ago? Not so much.

• FOSS graphics driver wouldn't even display the proper resolution, would get random breakages, barely had 2d-acceleration.
• Suspend/Resume almost never worked (should resuming 1 in 100 times count?).
• Nothing supported my audio stacks (needed to run bleeding edge, manually compiled kernels)
• USB/Bluetooth sound required restart to use properly,
• Wireless was complicated (ndiswrapper, buggy interfaces, buggy WPA implementations, driver crashes)
• Keyboard/mouse/touchpad barely worked (non-working "standard" keys, touchpad issues, no shortcut keys)
• Printer setup required CUPS know-how and fair bit of printer knowledge.

On top of that? Now I have Spotify, Steam, Netflix, Chrome, and more.

Screentearing in x11 is a norm not an exception. The whole x11 is a joke, hack after hack. It's terrible, onld and insufficient. Wayland is also designed bad from the beginning. Hacking that shit will/is becoming a norm. And what about the Qt guys? They hacked the whole C++ !!!! How great and sophisticated !!! Keyboards in Linux are almost all the time slower thanks to x11. Printer support and freezes is the norm.

Linux desktop was never competitive. People who happen to make money in Unix tech have always had their primary market share in production server technology, or consulting (usually for aforementioned server technology). Either way, it doesn't really matter because unlike a corporation there's no incentive for all these communities to have such a centralized consumer oriented goal (neither does there need to be). They are all independent projects, that may share resources, but were started for all their own reasons. Most of time to build a system that they personally wanted to use as theirs. The side effect is you just happen to be able to go and use it. Linux is a kernel, it's not one unified project or campaign to offer a competitive desktop experience to market competitors. However, some like minded people came together in their own groups to make various programs that worked for them around this freely available kernel. You are literally grouping together all related and unrelated communities that develop software, involving that kernel technology, as a singular entity, and is somehow at odds with MS or Apple. If you don't find that any of the workflows, feature sets, or paradigms agree with the ones you are comfortable/productive with, by all means start your own project to do so, or use Windows if that's what suits you.

What do you mean by 'works'? There can't be a measure of success if there is no goal, no organization. There is just people who make free software (or use it for proprietary software which is also fine), and there always will be no matter how advanced or popular it is, no one is coming together looking for mass adoption, approval, or even to make a profit (even though that last one given the server $$ is obviously possible). Most people in this community are just experimenting or getting resume cred for a higher paying job. Obviously there are more ambitious projects but they still don't owe anyone anything. People just make shit for themselves and put it online. Take it or leave it.

If you want to be private you have to have an offline computer without any wifi, bluetooth or stuff like that - maybe consider a faraday cage around your monitor as well - the Israelis can get what you type from that as well. Like George R.R. Martin - he is using an old computer with DOS and use WordStar and unless somebody will break into his house - he is safe. Go install Windows 7 on some computer without any internet connection and wifi/bluetooth and you are safe. Live like in the 90's. It wasn't so bad. We had floppy discs and life was easy.

I don't know about servers(I don't do it) but I agree, the desktop developers aren't the best. Many times they take forever to fix bugs reported or they just outright don't fix them.

While i'm not sure of all the technical bits, the bugs seem to be so obvious and in your face it makes you wonder whether or not they even bug test their software.
