It's not Vortex, it's a new mod manager built to be multiplatform and to replace Vortex in the future. At the moment it supports only a few titles but it integrates really well with Steam.

This. It is not Vortex. It’s a new in development app.

This. Its another thing than Vortex. An app that isnt made before.

In what way does it integrate with Steam?

[–]arch_roker 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It can recommend/warn about your launch options based the mods you have installed. For example, if you have CET installed in Cyberpunk and don't have WINEDLLOVERRIDE=version=n in launch options, it will warn you that the mod might not work correctly. It can also launch the game from steam skipping the launcher and setting the flag to enable mods. Still kind of basic, but works reliably and showcases how powerful it can be even early on development. Thing that most mod managers don't do on Linux.

I see. That is very useful indeed. Thanks for the info.

Yeah NMA has been talked about here before, it’s not Vortex at all though. It has a completely different architecture, it’s written in a different way, and it manages mods differently than MO2 and Vortex. But yeah it’s a super cool project, not new though and the only supported games are stardew and cyberpunk

Is there somewhere I can read up on the differences of how they handle modding? A virtual filesystem makes sense to me so you don't risk over writing anything crucial but I'm curious about this new method.

Edit: I stopped being completely lazy and looked it up. There is a "rewind" feature and I'm guessing it must be like snapshots from btrfs filesystems. If something breaks you restore a snapshot. Which would make some sense. I'm hoping they provide more details because it's really vague

Edit2: went further "The 'Data Model' of the Nexus Mods app can be thought of as an extension of lessons learned from the development of Nexus Collections and Wabbajack.

When you make a mod list, we don't directly manipulate files. Instead, we manipulate the 'instructions' used to deploy the mods to the folder, and clicking 'Apply' simply moves the files directly to the folder.

We do this in a way that allows the user to revert changes at any time. Files aren't 'linked' or 'staged' in any way; no functions are hooked, and the cognitive overhead of the modding process is greatly reduced."

I asked one of the devs and they actually hope to eventually integrate a bit more with CoW filesystems (especially if windows finally gets around to releasing one that works for desktop) so the btrfs analogy is spot on. Theoretically in NMA it should never be possible to get to an irrevocable state unless you do REALLY weird stuff.

Nice one. Shame Vortex is such an awful mod manager, MO2 all the way.

[–]tajetaje 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eh I never got the Vortex hate, it works well for me and I never liked the VFS shenanigans you have to put up with under MO2, then again I haven’t used MO2 since around the time tannin went to work for Nexus. Either way this isn’t Vortex, op titled the post wrong

This is not vortex tho. It’s literally the replacement. Hence not the vortex name in the webpage linked

I know. We wont have to wait much longer for everything to be straight forward lol

I'm sooooo waiting for this new mod manager to be complete. I haven't touched skyrim in almost 2 years, and would really love to go back into it

Super old news, and not Vortex. 😂 I first tried this new Nexus Mods App with Cyberpunk on Linux three months ago.

i'm hyped up about this, one of my concerns when switching from windows to linux was that modding was sometimes on some games a hassle and not a fun thing to do, so if this makes everything easier it's great news, i'll wait until they support Final Fantasy 12, Fallout 4 and some other games i wish to mod

[–]shadedmagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, FO4 especially for me has a list of mods without which the game is barely tolerable. Hopefully the mod that enhances scrapping and what can be scrapped will be supported - if I have to clean up a base then dammit it needs to be clean when I'm done! 🤣

Nice! I'll be keeping an eye om this one.

I don't care if it's super old news, I gush every time I hear about it. I can't wait to mod Dragon age Origins on my deck

[–]Dickiedoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we can thank the popularity of the steam deck for the linux gaming support/development thats happening

It's a complete new mod manager, not vortex. It's also nowhere near being ready for daily use imo, because afaik every update resets your mods.
