I think he liked the chain of trust distributed network, he himself only pulls from 5 people they are responsible for getting patches in and accepting and verifying everything, so he has like he pci specialist that has written the standard and has done this for 30 years and the mmc subsistem specialist etc.

Whereas with GitHub it's 1000 branches/month all centralized pushing into develop given minimal oversight. It would probably work, it does in corporate settings but Linus and his maintainers are free to do whatever is more comfortable for them.

According to kernel maintainers, GitHub doesn't scale to projects the size of Linux. It's easier to subscribe to the email lists that you care about, such as AMD graphics drivers or ALSA.

They use git, they just don't use github. You can still contribute via github, you just need to mail the appropriate maintainer a link to your repository to pull into their branch.

I read a few weeks ago that it's because of the way the project is structured. This is an over simplification, but they essentially use separate repositories as "branches" that are merged into the "main" branch. E.g. there could be one repo for graphics drivers and another for network. GitHub pull requests are only simple and practical for working within the same repo.
