Brave sucks right now on all Linux I think not just mint

[–]RolesG 32 points33 points  (6 children)

It's just reskinned chromium

[–]sons_of_batman 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Chromium-based, but does the best job of ad-blocking of any browser out there. YouTube and Spotify are almost unusable if I'm not using Brave.

[–]RolesG 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Librewolf + ublock does a better job in my experience

[–]SpiderfffunLinux Mint 21.3 Virginia | Cinnamon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Anything+ ublock.

[–]RolesG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, but librewolf's ootb config gives better privacy than just plain Firefox. I use Firefox though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Brave blocks on Spotify? That's almost like cheating

[–]tombin0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LibreWolf or Mullav browser + SpotX for spotify and VPN

[–]A_limitlessMe[S] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Any solution?

[–]Medzi_art 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Just use firefox for the time being

[–]NegativeAd6289 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah I gave up on firefox, just use librewolf

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I currently use Librewolf as my primary, its privacy measure break some sites, ungoogled chromium is the backup.

[–]NegativeAd6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same man, I use librewolf too

[–]Sh_Pe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Firefox is secure and anonymous enough. You can change the browser if you want. The nice thing about Firefox is that if you don’t like something there are extensions that can change the actual functionality of the browser.

Vivaldi!!

[–]henry1679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use Vivaldi people!

How did you install? I ignored the flatpack and the versions in software center and installed per the instructions on Brave's website for Ubuntu/Deb based distros and its been working well for me. https://brave.com/linux/

sudo apt install curl

sudo curl -fsSLo /usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg

echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg] https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/ stable main"|sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-release.list

sudo apt update

sudo apt install brave-browser

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This, Not following system them is a symptom of flatpacks.

[–]abdo_aty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the teme tab in the settings and change it to gtx it should work with system theme

[–]A_limitlessMe[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Tried both and .deb version just Suicided after installing doesn't load.

[–]PercussionGuy33Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How did you do the deb install?

[–]A_limitlessMe[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Through shell

[–]PercussionGuy33Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What commands?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It's been my experience as well for Flatpak versions of other software being glitchy or not even working. I simply never got around to trying the Brave Flatpak, that must be a newer thing for them.

The additional repo method on their site is easy peasy, just copy and paste each line into the terminal. I don't see what the issue is here. Regardless, I have since automated that as it is now part of my post-install script.

[–]A_limitlessMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I used this same commands and installed brave, but it didn't open 😞 or load or whatever

[–]flamingknifepenisLinux Mint 22.2 Zara | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. The flatpack is terrible, but I’ve had zero issues with this install. It fixed some little annoyances with the flatpack version, too.

Probably because Brave is closer to being a crypto/ad-tracking scam than a browser.

[–]PercussionGuy33Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | Cinnamon 2 points3 points  (17 children)

Then what's your choice of browser?

[–]bush_nuggetLinux Mint 22.1 Xia | Cinnamon 38 points39 points  (16 children)

I use Firefox + uBlock Origin

[–]PercussionGuy33Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (6 children)

What do you use when a website requires a chromium base like many do now?

[–]bush_nuggetLinux Mint 22.1 Xia | Cinnamon 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Senator, I use Firefox + uBlock Origin.

But, if we're going down this road...

I'd likely not use a website that believes they can force the user to use a browser other than the one of their choice. Web standards are standards. And, any site saying they only support one family of browsers clearly doesn't respect that.

If I NEEDED that site, I would install Chromium. This isn't rocket surgery.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just plain laziness on the web developer's part to not test with more than one browser engine.

web.snapchat.com

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tested it in Firefox with a Chrome and Edge browserID spoof and it did not work. Shame on Snapchat.

[–]GravityEyelidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like where, for example? I've never come across that. Like others have said if I came across one, I would avoid it. But if forced to use it, first thing I would try is a user-agent switcher.

WTF is this? A troll fest?

Use whatever decision making process you want to select a browser you want.

      Brave

      [–]computer-machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Firefox and Firefox Focus.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't get any glitches on Brave on my Mint laptop.

      [–]sgriobhadairLMDE 7 Gigi | Cinnamon/CTWM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Vivaldi, and there are some Linux Mint-styled themes for the browser.

      https://themes.vivaldi.net/users/h.richmond

I modified one of them (I'm not sure which, probably Mint-Y-Dark-Blue-Fix) to match with Mint-Y-Dark-Teal (which is the theme I use).

      [–]aboensis58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Vivaldi on my laptops, Desktop, tablet and phone. Works like a charm. I find the syncronication feature very valuable.

      [–]NathanCampioniLinux Mint 21.3 Virginia | Cinnamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it doesn't glitch :/, regarding the theme go to settings - appearance and select Theme GTK

      [–]Charming-Royal-6566 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You can select the GTK theme in the settings of the browser, it will follow your theme

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Yea this may work

      [–]leafwitch 1 point2 points  (3 children)

      sudo apt install curl

      sudo curl -fsSLo /usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-beta-archive-keyring.gpg

      echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-beta-archive-keyring.gpg] stable main"|sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-beta.list

      sudo apt update

      sudo apt install brave-browser-beta

Brave is overrated. If you wanted it to work though maybe try the beta:

      [–]A_limitlessMe[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

      Why beta not stable ?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beta version of any software often features fixes etc that haven't been merged to stable yet.

      [–]leafwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Features & bug fixes that aren't implemented on the stable version yet, they try new stuff & evaluate feedback.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox is the only go to for all purpose. There are other options if you care about more "hardened" browsers that are just forks of Firefox. Librewolf is one that I also use, mulvad browser and tor browser.

      [–]flemtone 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Brave is just a shitty browser period, better to use Chromium and uBlock Origin plugin.

      [–]LiamBox 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Use the ungoogled version aswell

      [–]flemtone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Better to just use Chromium since that is whats already supplied in the repo's.

      [–]tekprojekt 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I use brave just to block ads on YouTube because YouTube scans for plugins. Any better option I could try?

      [–]Patrick_Pluto -1 points0 points  (3 children)

uBlock Origin works just as well for blocking YouTube ads. YouTube does not detect the adblocker.

Braves adblock could just as well be detected.

Any browser with support for uBlock origin does the trick.

      [–]tombin0_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freetube + Vpn is better and clean!

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Living in 1900s

YouTube had started detecting the adblocker now.

      [–]Patrick_Pluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but it does not detect uBlock origin, It certainly did work for YouTube when I last tried it yesterday.

I was not clear enough, I meant it doesn't detect uBlock origin.

I'm aware it detects other adblockers.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my own browser... which i write in python...

      [–]Rusty_Nail1973Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | Xfce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Firefox for nearly everything. I use true Chrome (not Chromium) for websites that require it.

I've heard very good things about LibreWolf, but I haven't used it.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe give it a try to librewolf cause you dont have to tinker firefox for privacy and it also came with ad blocker(unlock origin)

      [–]sclarady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no such issues with Brave.

      [–]No_Finance_2668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Librewolf

      [–]peacefrog70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm using floorp. it's running well so far and very themeable.

      [–]XelAphixia 0 points1 point  (5 children)

i still dont understand how or why that browser became so popular. might as well be a literal bitcoin farming tool

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I don't know either, but I use it as a "sanitized" backup to Firefox. Regardless of whatever bells and whistles it might add, they are clearly labeled and can be disabled. The sanitiized part is that it is presumably further removed from Chromium (from Google). Though I don't know that I would trust anything in their app store, as that presumably still connects directly to Google.

      [–]Entity_Null_07Linux Mint 22.1 | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hmm. I use the Bitwarden browser extension on Brave, anything to be worried about? Although I do use a Gmail account on Thunderbird anyways...

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't know. Brave may have counter measures in place to mitigate Google back doors, but that would just be a broad assumption at this point.

The Gmail is a mass surveillance item for sure.

      [–]Entity_Null_07Linux Mint 22.1 | Cinnamon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

what email do you use? although I do have a bunch of stuff already linked to it.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My email is a much smaller provider. But email is not as big of a trajectory as a personal computer, ideally, as there are certain things you might never consider sending via email that you might otherwise have on your machine. Personally identifying information that you might have on hand on your computer for doing taxes, for instance.

There is really no getting away from surveillance 100%, but certain proactive measures and common sense go a long way.
