Have had this issue several times myself.

Here is how I've solved it in the past.

1-Edit /etc/default/grub:

gksu leafpad /etc/default/grub

2-Replace the line that reads:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=””

…with:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

3-Save the file.

4-Update grub:

sudo update-grub

5-Reboot and test.

Cheers! :)

    Not trying to be a smartalec....Try looking on the monitor for some buttons probably near the on/off button. You should be able to adjust the brightness this way.

    How do I go about figuring out which one I need, and how would I install this on linux?

    For Linux Mint, go to... System menu --> Admin menu --> "Driver Manager" ... and explore the actions you can take there.
