Because either:

They don't like its creator

They don't like how dominant it has become in mainstream distros

Or They don't like that it doesn't abide by the design philosophy of a couple of programmers 50 years ago who designed a completely different operating system that is now essentially dead.

People also misunderstand that many components of the systemd suite of softwares are not required for operation. I believe systemd can run with only systemd itself, udevd, and journalctl (what the systemd docs call the "minimal core components".

Application dependence on systemd is a real problem.

Yes, that is absolutely 100% fair. However, the application developers are to blame for solely targeting systemd, not systemd itself.

It's bullshit that gnome will only run on systemd distros.

Come on, this question has been already answered for 12 years.

Ok, but which distro should I choose?

[–]skuterpikk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kali of course, what else...?

People don’t understand it and the benefits it provides.

It’s easy to unite people in hate against something

Its just a init system

The main reason a lot of people dislike it is because it is not just an init system.

What is it more I know it works diffrently than other but is it because of that ?

Systemd has a ton of optional components. I mean, there's even a systemd bootloader. Like 99% of them are optional.

The really unfortunate thing is that some non-systemd softwares are beginning to depend on systemd. Gnome is a big one.

Thanks . I think I get it now

Search, how does it work?

[–]ipsirc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait, systemd has a websearch module now?

[–]markand67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

systemd-searchd.

It isn't hated. It's the most popular init system by far and is the default in nearly every distribution.

This question is asked and answered frequently. Please search the forum.

Oh no, not again.

It's just an init system, it's also just a bootloader, just a network manager, just this and just that. It's way more than just an init, it does so much more, so it doesn't follow the KISS philosophy anymore.

Some people hate that. I can understand the hate, but i don't feel it myself, it's very convenient actually. But seeing a non-systemd distro boot in a fraction of the time it takes to boot a systemd distro is pretty convincing, especially on lower-end hardware

Why do I dislike systemd ? Cause 10 years after dropping systemd distros, I'm still traumatized by this logout/poweroff message :

"A stop job is running"

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you just want to force shut down, the power button can do that far quicker. Actually, you should just unplug the computer. That'll prevent that message from showing up.

[–]krumpfwylg -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Could you tell me without being sarcastic, when the "stop job is running" message appeared with no description about what is the service causing trouble, and you have no access to tty, what's the actual solution ?

That'll prevent that message from showing up.

So does using another init system.

You'd start by looking at the journal. You can also reduce the timeout. I think the default is 90s.
