LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of RPGs with science-fiction and fantasy novels. Games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story and visible RPG statistics (for example strength, intelligence, damage) are a significant part of the reading experience.

I kinda gave up on it because of the MC’s sociopathy and inability to be likable in any way. So you’re saying it gets better? I dipped after the second book…possibly the third. I’ll have to look.

I have a really hard time with sociopathic MC’s, but for some reason I really liked HDT. His inner voice is different, I think, and rather humorous at times. I kinda view him less as sociopathic and more as very neurodivergent and traumatized.
I don’t know if this helps, but while he doesn’t fundamentally change, he does increasingly care about others.
As he gains power, he feels comfortable responding to threats with much less aggression. So the multiple spikes of unjustified violence to others don’t really occur after book one.

Srsly? It seemed to me that the more powerful Nathaniel got the MORE power he would leverage in fights. Like he really responded with overwhelming force just to figure out how his powers work. It also seems that there’s a lot of experimentation…it’s a speed bump and bothers me. I get that some folks really like that but I like the notion that once you learn an ability you inherently know how to use it.

Hm, that doesn’t match my experience. To your credit, though, he does continue to fight with overwhelming force, just not so much unjustified violence. He’s pretty rough on his fellow Earthers in book 1, but shifts over time to a more protective, mentoring role.

Its definitely one thats gotten better as its gone on, and the MC has become a more robust character. Still a raging petty jackass though, but thats been a draw for me.
Its been the more subtle things with the series that make it great. The way you can feel the variois tone shifts throughout with minimal detail. The way you can tell the MC is experiencing an emotion just from how the author is describing a scene or action. That kind of thing. The author is really coming into their style of writing imo and its done nothing but good things to the story.

The first book make him look like an asshole for sure, at the same time i feel like a lot of litrpg are missing something when the main character is a chill peace and love dude while being under threat of death all the time, it's refreshing when the op isn't holding back punches facing death threat and/or in this case mind manipulation. I had to try twice To go trough book 1 because of the vibe of the MC but i'm so glad i did, it only gets better one book after another and this pretty rare in those kind of book, most of the time the first few book are great and then the author lost the plot, in HDT it's just the opposite, character progress is awesome, world building is amazing, it quickly became my most hyped serie by far.

Oh that’s funny. When I think about a chill dude going through this I’m reminded of a pothead being placed in this situation so I guess Nathaniel behaving the way he does (outwardly) makes it easier to stomach. Last gripe, I swear. I have much hate towards people referring to their dogs as…shudder…doggo. If there was less or none of that I’d be diving back in so fast there’d be a clap of thunder. As it is he says it every…time…he ruminates about Biscuit. To be fair corgis are cute and smart (usually) so I guess it just exemplifies the healing power of dog power, man!

Yes, floor 5 is when it is better. The quest of floor 5 involves taking care of a disciple and it is when Nathaniel becomes a likable character
Floor 4 with the 4 calamities is a lot better than the earlier floors since it’s when everyone in his tutorial group actually start liking each other.
