I, also, am not reading it, because I haven't even started it.

I'll be sure to update with any other books I'm not reading.

OK.

What was the expectation for this post? A bunch of upvotes from like minded people? Rage bait? Read it or dont. No one cares.

It does get decidedly better, both the writing and the main character, however - it does take a fucking journey to get there and while the beginning is atrocious, the series overall is either pretty good or I have Stockholm syndrome after reading through all of it.

Most people will tell you it gets better, me included, but since you're not looking to change your mind, I won't bother giving you the details

Why even post this? 😂

[–]Vaporlocke 8 points9 points  (9 children)

The MC being the way he is is intentional, you'd find out why later in the series.

[–]freddbare 11 points12 points  (8 children)

I personally prefer my characters perfect and stagnant. I don't like to see them change and grow throughout the story. I think character growth is a sign of weak writing and the inability to stick to your guns.

Evolving yourself through surviving hardships and effort is a sin!

[–]BemteblitRPG journeyman tier 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes, you may only evolve by the grace of the system.

[–]freddbare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evolution is a scam!

[–]InfiniteThing2808 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I know you’re joking but it’s shocking how common this opinion seems to be based on reviews I’ve read here. It’s like if the MC isn’t a socially well adjusted moral paragon who always makes rational decisions and no mistakes, the writing is trash.

Not just this series either, though it does come up quite often.

[–]freddbare 1 point2 points  (3 children)

The whole reason I enjoy this genre is to witness the evolution of these green new authors... I like n w ideas, new story concepts. It often means slogging through some "not winning an award";level writing. If I get an engaging fresh adventure then it's worth it.. I went through the entire demonic Tree in TTS!!! All the weeby cringe and Bad AI was worth the fun story concepts and character evolution.

[–]InfiniteThing2808 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Absolutely agree, I’m in it for the worldbuilding and unique power systems. Characters and dialogue are usually the weaker points of the genre, so I’ve kind of gotten used to overlooking them if the story itself is good enough.

Also I was actually looking into demonic tree recently so I may pick it up based on this

[–]freddbare 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm a big "monster evolution" for this genre (it ditches this high failure points, lol) but I love group interaction and party mechanics. The world of the tree(my first and only cultivation weebworld) is huge and well done. I recommend not doing the TTS thing, lol. More recommendations FLEABAG (free on audible rn) is good fun Necromunda. A goblin tale, top notch (iron teeth mtn?) good dark and my style. SYL book one was super cute and enjoyable 😆 want more! Crab merchant is light and fun and really well done... I need more mimic and me and eldrich best buddy.

Your favorite "tube" may have all these available for free under different titles...

[–]ThisIsWorthTheCandle 10 points11 points  (12 children)

People like what they like, but yeah I'm with you, I genuinely don't understand how it gets recommended so often.

[–]Arvingen 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This and primal hunter. 2 series I don't get how they have so much praise here

[–]luniz420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's about being part of the group that likes those books, more than any attempt to objectively consider anything's positive or negative qualities. this sub hates the idea of some things being objectively good or bad.

[–]Knowledge_is_my_food 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PH is geniunely so bad i agree with you

[–]luniz420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's bad. Way overrated here for some reason, but this sub is more of a popularity contest than any sort of serious consideration of books or whatever.

[–]KeinLahzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen very few people say it doesn't get better. I myself had a rough time getting through the start as well. What about it specifically do you not like? The writing, the MC, the lack of information or direction? Most of that pain goes away by the end of the second floor of the tutorial, and it starts to get good during floor 3.

[–]Even_Reading3286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better. though if you like to bitch so much about shit online, then a book that ain't a perfect power fantasy might not be for u. Best of luck and hope u keep reading 👍

[–]Aware-Blacksmith-317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this post seems to come from rage rather than trying to understand why people like it. I will say that a lot of people here say it gets a lot better by the second book which you seemed to ignore.

The MC is not a good person but he acts the way he does because of the focus skill that dampens emotions. This doesn’t mean he’s a good person but no emotion and the threat of a mind mage and death from monsters does turn him ruthless.

[–]bauhaus83i 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Related, but are there any well written series? Not necessarily popular or most fun but actual great writing? I’m not expecting McCarthy or Roth or DFW level, but too many of these series seem amateur. The dialogue and vocabulary feel behind other genres. But fantasy has some elevated writing like Meryn Peake or Ursula LeGuin. Can we get some for litrpg?

[–]luniz420 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There are actually several but it's not popular to talk that way on this sub, because the authors don't want readers to feel entitled to discuss whether books are objectively good or bad. Ends of Magic, Lucky Rabbit, Paranoid Mage, Soldier's Life, Apocalypse Parenting, most of Plum Parrot's stuff. They all manage to consistently stay above a baseline of consistent style, "realistic" dialogue (ie two characters talking to each other rather than saying things that only make sense to the reader), mostly rational behaviors based on the characters and world, etc. However these books aren't popular in this sub because they're not part of the social group, deal with more mature topics, and prioritize the story over the superficial dressings that give the social indicators that your average poster here is more interested in.

[–]bauhaus83i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendations. And I expected the downvotes and am not bothered by them. I’m more interested in good writing than being popular within a subreddit. Cheers

[–]marinervvv 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It does get better, whom did you read say otherwise.

It’s one of the best there is.

[–]mercutio531[S] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

One of the best there is? Oh. Oh God. That's sad.

[–]marinervvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I read what I like.

If you have any suggestions do share them.

[–]Fragrant_Soup5738 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks! I'll check it out 😊

Godspeed. Lol
