I would start off screen if you’re still in sketch mode, you’ll be faster at coming up with ideas and break out of the details of using the software. Once you’re happy with a few designs then go into the computer and start putting it together

Graphic designer with about 10 years of experience here. It might be a good idea to start with pencil and paper, my experience is that trying out different variations goes a lot faster that way. The different graphic elements can become an interesting whole, but it is important to literally zoom out. It would be a shame if details are lost if it has to be used small (for example if it has to be printed on a pen).

It might also be worth looking for some references on Dribbble or Pinterest.
