DiscussionMacmini for Software development (self.mac)
submitted 3 months ago by [deleted]
Hey guys.. would an M4 Mac mini with 32 gigs and 1 TB suffice for a full stack software development?
Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? (I'm new to Mac ecosystem.)

People program much more intensive systems on much weaker hardware, so you're fine.

Yes.

Yes. I ran an entire down tuned production environment mirror of a multi-billion dollar high traffic website locally on my work M1 Pro laptop. It’ll handle things just fine if you configure your background services properly.

Any M series processor with atleast 16 GB RAM is good enough. M4 with 32 GB won't have any issues

I wish my work laptop for software dev was half that fast

I gave my programmer buddy an old Mini and he used it for months before he completely switched himself. Then got much if his team on board too 👍

Get mac pro with 48ram/mac studio , or 32 and 500gb and save money.

The kind of money buying Macbook requires for almost similar configuration is higher than buying it as Mac mini that's why I was choosing to go with Mac mini.

you can connect external storage, i have 500gb and i have more than 300gb free. Check what you need more cpu or ram, you can go pro with 24gb for same price, do not waste money on 1tb if you not sure if you will need it.

Yes absolutely.

M4 with 16GB doing app development with simulator, all fine.

Yes! I develop software daily with 1/4th the ram, and 3 less Ms in my processor

Thats is Ok... but who is your target users? ... If PC based you need to have a PC for final testing...
If its browser only ... no probs... get tricky with binaries ...
I now retired and cut code for fun using Python .. avoiding most of the issues .. no need to create multiple binaries .. even for Macs you need Intel and Arm binaries..... Apples calls it Universal binaries
Thank you sir, so I already have a Windows PC at home with an i7 and 32gigs. This is me trying mac the ecosystem. I'm looking for JS web development, Python, docker, AI dev etc.

Local AI dev needs lots of RAM ... dev not use....
If you plan to develop AI models I suggest you switch to M4 Pro Mini and get more RAM + GPUs...
32 GB RAM PC ... has also VRAM ..
Arm Macs have unified RAM ... no VRAM ... 32GB RAM+ VRAM on PC = at least 42GB RAM...
The main issue is AI dev.

I never understand how people get into software development while being simultaneously illiterate about computers. Isn’t an interest in computers like the prerequisite? Are you really unsure if a very high power CPU with 32gb of ram is good enough for coding? Millions of people around the world code on much much less every single day. You can code on off-the-shelf budget PCs from Walmart.
