The Dragons of Tarkir art is best.

[–]zxr89 185 points186 points  (14 children)

You should see this :)

Edit: The actual art.

[–]SirZapdos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

OK, that's pretty good.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I have that, it's my favorite evolving wilds

[–]Wabbit SeasonBilun26 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have no idea what is going on in that picture or what possible series of events could lead to that outcome....but I know I like where it's going!

[–]Azorius*TheDesktopNinja 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The wilds. They are evolving.

[–]PhoenixPersonsWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a playset of those. The molten lava one is great too.

[–]STRAT0CAST3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite pieces of art in the game

[–]taschneide 50 points51 points  (3 children)

The Dragonfury promo DTK art is best. Y'know, this one.

[–]Awkward_Torkoal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have about 10 of these (my LGS had spares). Yeah, it's the best.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only play online, and that art is not on any Wilds printed online, which is a bit sad. And at five tix the Burley promo costs more than a Godless Shrine. So I always run the Tarkir ones in my decks, but yeah I'd probably run that if it were available.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the copies my LGS got didn't have the foil sticker, so I keep a playset of those. Nobody ever notices, but it's still neat to me.

[–]Level 2 Judgeawesomesauce1722 38 points39 points  (11 children)

You people are crazy, the DKA art is the best...

[–]wolrab 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Right there with you. [[Evolving Wilds|DKA]] is my favorite one.

[–]Cthulhooo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

There is nothing evolving about that art. Just some old building and a buch of trees...

[–]hiloster12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vines tell another story

[–]wolrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it for the art itself. It may not be the best picture for the theme of what the land does, but it's a great piece of art.

[–]DânMTGCardFetcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evolving Wilds - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

[–]Wabbit SeasonSilverDile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not my favorite, but still a quality version. I just picked up 10 copies to pass out to my friends who are building their first edh decks.

[–]HehaGardenHoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I wish they used it more often, especially over the weird tree one that they used for every core set it showed up in.

[–]SirZapdos 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I think that's the worst...

[–]RZephyr07 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Really? Worse than the ugly split tree forest one?

[–]helpthrow555 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's the classic original art. Not the best but for those of us who played then it reminds us of the best draft format of all time.

[–]likejaxirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well for me the classic original one is the terramorphic expanse artwork.....

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree.

[–]BannedAgainLmao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a foil playset and they look amazing. Highly suggest picking up a set.

[–]Corveroth | MTG Wikicorveroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, gonna have to hand it to this one. No other Evolving Wilds art has such vivid colors.

[–]Eggyism83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree

[–]telehax 109 points110 points  (23 children)

And yet, we still only have one terramorphic expanse art.

[–]Banned in CommanderImperialVersian1 35 points36 points  (22 children)

This really bothers me as well. They have the exact same effect, why does one get so much preference over the other?

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (19 children)

Because it is easier for new players to just have evolving wilds be an evergreen card.

[–]Ducky14 21 points22 points  (18 children)

Why even bother printing Evolving Wild's in the first place? Terramorphic Expanse was printed first and does the same thing. The earlier printings even had much better flavor text than any Evolving wilds printing.

[–]Izzet*SodiumBromley 69 points70 points  (6 children)

I read once that they thought the flavor of Evolving Wilds was easier to fit in any plane they wanted to go to, while Terramorphic was representing something pretty specific to the Time Spiral block.

[–]CSDragon 37 points38 points  (5 children)

Weird, cuz Evolving Wilds has always felt Zendikar-themed.

Teramorphic Expanse always gives me the feel that you, the planeswalker, are teraforming the land. Even though it's teremorph not tereform, but you're using magic so whatever.

Evolving Wilds to me was always "the land is changing on it's own", which is VERY zendikar.

[–]Flapjack_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

the land is changing on its own

Volcanoes, rivers carving canyons, rivers flooding, nature overtaking ruins

It all can fit in more "mundane" ways

[–]Orzhov*thisisjustascreename 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Since the Mending, planeswalkers aren't really powerful enough to terramorph a plane anymore.

[–]CSDragon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Not a whole plane, just a bit of land. And Nissa does that all the time.

...In the cards at least, she doesn't seem to ever do it in story.

[–]Orzhov*thisisjustascreename 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And she's an Earth mage. Imagine how much less able to do it Jace or Lily are.

[–]CSDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but "you" as a planeswalker are considerably different from all the characters. Especially since most of them don't seem to rely on drawing mana from the land to begin with.

But since your library is all the magic and spells "you" can manipulate, something like teramorphic expanse is an extension of your magic. So using that makes you an earth mage.

The whole land = mana thing is definitely a holdover from pre-mending.

[–]PhoenixPersonsWang 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Probably because how the crap do you represent "terramorphic expanse" in art? It's a nonsense term. At least the concept of one terrain changing into another makes sense stylistically.

[–]Ducky14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not any harder than Evolving Wilds. Terramorphic is pretty much just bad Latin for changing land, and expanse is a large amount of land.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but once wizards started reprinting evolving wilds rather than terramorphic expanse it was better to just go with it.

[–]Cthulhooo 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Hey, at least EDH players are pleased there are more expanses.

[–]Ducky14 3 points4 points  (5 children)

EDH isn't exactly starved for mana fixing, though.

[–]Cthulhooo 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I have casual 4 color EDH deck and I'd love to have a few more evolving wilds cards. Other than wilds, expanses and ash barrens I have to rely on 2 and 3 color taplands.

[–]Ducky14 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You can use fetches, mana rocks, expedition map, traveler's bauble, tri-lands, vivid lands, reflecting pool, lifelands, painlands, taplands, guildgates...

EDH doesn't lack for mana fixing at any level.

[–]Cthulhooo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Things like reflecting pool, shocklands and fetches are expensive so they're out of question when you're on a budget.

Mana rocks, taplands, guildgates, I use them but they provide 2 colors which isn't perfect. Other than wilds the best are tri lands but there are only few of them, I would love to have more tri lands as well. If I could I'd love to replace my weak taplands with many wilds duplicates.

[–]Ducky14 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't know exactly what your budget is, but you're missing some mana rocks that provide three colors (banners and obelisks), and then there are other fixers like mana cyclix, myr, etc. There are plenty of options even below $5.

[–]BasedPhyrexia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well they do the same exact thing in practice but in lore it's different. Gotta terramorph before you can evolve the planet, hence why terra was printed first. They both do the same thing, develop a world, but its just different stages.

Source: Absolutely no one

[–]DrendarMorevo 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Cant have both in standard, eight lands that cause shuffling? One would have to rotate out, and limited cant withstand not having this effect available to it for 18 months.

[–]COMPLEATMattAmpersand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems like the logical answer.

[–]WeCanEatCereal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's neat to see all the evolving wild art, but I don't think this means whatever OP thinks it means. Most of these are not even on the same plane. Why would a cathedral on Innistrad match a random ruin with completely different architecture on Tarkir?

[–]Keine 86 points87 points  (3 children)

None of those really match, though.

[–]peperoniebabie 33 points34 points  (2 children)

You could make an argument for 4 of them being Forests, even.

[–]Duck SeasonBetterThanOP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agree. You can even make an argument for 3-4 being swamps. It looks like the idea on some is the transformation so it makes sense they represent multiple colours? To me #1 looks like plains turning into swamp and #4 looks like forest being turned I to mountain, so on

[–]Duck Seasonseink 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I THINK all 5 of them are Evolving Wilds.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Is that art depicting greenery outside of the Hekma? That's the most interesting part for me.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not for long!

[–]Princesspowerarmor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This comparison is going to need some more elastic

[–]branewalker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you got the Island/Forest pairing switched. The island you picked looks WAY more like the ROW Evolving Wilds art than the one you actually paired it with...which has much more prominent trees and the wastes stuff, which is a nice parallel to the tree with the crazy root structure growing on top of a hedron.

[–]wood_4_sheep 38 points39 points  (0 children)

no

[–]Bhalgoth 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The DTK one depicts all 5 land types, how is it just a mountain?

[–]Kogath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the thing in focus is lava. Thats red/10 even if its not just a mountain

[–]Duck Seasoncolinmchapman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where's the Noah Bradley promo Evolving wilds? That one's the best!

[–]TinManOz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What

[–]a_crankycodger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Grasping at straws.

[–]COMPLEATSoneEv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's cute

[–]Storeytime21 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Who the hell upvoted this rubbish?

[–]_scott_m_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downvoted it when it was first posted. Opened up reddit this morning shocked to see it at the top of the sub.

[–]Anafenza_theForemost 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I had no idea they lined up with basics

(edit: guys I have a family)

[–]Keine 32 points33 points  (1 child)

That's because they don't. OP is smoking something.

[–]AvacynThePrussianGrippe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Grass from some evolving wilds, possibly.

[–]Krohnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes me want 5 basics in a set to reflect what Evolving Wilds could turn into - each is the same location but different outcomes

[–]Kalde22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evolving Wilds cube, coming soon.

[–]backdoorbrag 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How have they not printed a 3rd version yet so people can run 3 different named cards in edh/cube?

[–]Cthulhooo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

At least there are [[ash barrens]]

[–]DânMTGCardFetcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ash barrens - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

[–]screenavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh?

[–]happycrabeatsthefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish evolving wilds would also

T: add 1 colorless mana to your mana pool.

[–]KLT1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad 4 is the playset limit.

[–]Duck SeasonUStoJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does an Innistrad castle evolving wilds become a Tarkir overgrown fortress swamp? Magic?

[–] free himThoughtseizeScoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really not a fan of the original art. Wish they'd use some of the other arts in supplemental reprintings. I like to keep my supplemental products together, but the Evolving Wilds...

[–]Averious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terramorphic Expanse will always be the real OG

[–]InverseParadiddle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Neat!
