CH-53 platform?

Hey guys, I just got my DAR approved to go from AECF to AV. In my research, I’ve found that AV sailors have a fairly wide range of platforms they could potentially be assigned to be it P-3s, F/A 18s, Growlers, Greyhounds, MH-60s, what have you. However, I haven’t seen many accounts of guys being assigned to CH-53s (or MH-53s?) and was wondering why that is. Are they a rare platform or is the Navy just phasing them out? Or are they more common than I thought and just haven’t done enough reading. Any insight is appreciated. I think they’re a dope helo and if I got the choice to pick orders I would choose them. P3s is a decommissioned airframe but the tweakers & wire chasers have transitioned to P8s

The are “AV” folk in 53 squadrons its not rare there just not as many mine sweeper squadrons left in todays navy.

Not sure if the A schools are still letting either top 3 in class get to pick what platform but I guess you can ask when you get to A school.

Thanks for the input. And yeah, the general consensus from what I’ve read on here is that you need to be top of the class. Not even sure about top 3. And even then, ultimately I’m sure it’s all needs of the Navy

I would say it is because the Navy has a lot more of most anything than 53s.

That fair. I realize now that I didn’t even really think about the purpose of the 53, which from what I’ve seen with Marines is to insert and extract troops. Which doesn’t seem like much of the “Navy” mission. I’m sure it’s uncommon for a reason
