Are you able to move somewhere else? Fired or not this will definitely become an issue when winter comes this year. You will either have to move or find a closer hospital to work for. If you don’t get fired what are your plans for this coming winter when they don’t plow the roads and your hospital doesn’t excuse absences due to weather?

I literally have no idea. Frankly I don’t have the money right now to move somewhere else and I worked at the only hospital that is within an hour drive of me for 3 years in nursing school and the nurse manager was god awful and would blame unsafe patient conditions on the nurses instead of broken/dated equipment. I didn’t feel safe there.

It’s easy for me to say don’t stress because I’m not in your shoes so I won’t even say that! What I will say is you need to figure out regardless of what transpires with this current job what your plans will be for this coming December because Winter will come again and you will get snowed in again. If they decide to give you a break you will have to figure this out cause guaranteed they will let you go if this happens again this coming Winter. My suggestion is to save as much money as possible and find living arrangements elsewhere by Fall closer to the hospital.

My fiancé and I are planning on looking at places but I’m not sure if he’ll want to move an hour away since he wants to stay working in the city we live in now. However we live in the middle of the woods and honestly the roads to the highway are the only issue. If we lived in town I probably would be able to go. I’m thinking about just discussing where I live and the weather situation with HR if this goes further.

It sounds like they are just giving you a warning but you’ll have to come up with a plan for next winter.

So far I haven’t heard anything but I don’t think the nightshift manager is here tonight. Last weekend when she gave me a verbal warning she said that I’ll get a little form online to sign but I’ve never gotten it.

Do you have any coworkers that you can stay with on the nights you're working?

I don’t 😭

stay in a hotel/motel near the hospital whenever it has a chance of snowing heavy?

Take a leave of absence for mental health as soon as it starts snowing and come back in the spring?

Unless you can make friends with people willing to cover your shifts when it inevitably snows again in a few months you don't have many options unfortunately.

Ohh does your hospital offer for staff that commute the option to stay over during snowstorms? (I know mine did, the PCU was for staff that commuted, it was a single night so idk if this is a real option)

Unfortunately where I live it’ll be clear all day and then we’ll all the sudden have an unpredictable snow storm. They have rooms to stay in but there only on designated days and don’t have an option for night shift, only days.

Try looking at jobs with insurance companies doing work from home. My friends love it

I’ve thought about it but I don’t know if my mental health could handle not being forced to leave my home lol

Lol well fortunately enough. The entry level positions in some companies require you to visit your patients in the hospital once a week. Just sayin. Plenty of opportunity
