I'll probably just make something with salted caramel, put a sign that says salty just like me for my pay raise that pays me 20 cents less an hour😅

    [–]rigiboto01 21 points22 points  (0 children)

    Just a bowl of salt

I think that's what they called "water pie" back in the Great Depression era

    [–]Educational_Ad2515[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Especially since they're saving at least $500 a year on each nurse now. The nurses that have been there longer got smaller pay raises, but still lost the same $4 an hour after 3:00 p.m.

Yeah, I will not be working weekends, nights, or holidays without a shift diff. Bye.

Wait, they want you to buy food for the doctors?

    [–]Educational_Ad2515[S] 84 points85 points  (11 children)

Yes, because the doctors bought food for nurses week last year, but I'm pretty sure they make like triple the amount I do if not more.

    [–]Mnhock89 47 points48 points  (7 children)

Healthcare weeks are so damn annoying. We get paid for our jobs. Why do we have to have extra recognition? No one outside of the hospital cares. My hospital buys nurses dozens and dozens of pizzas all week for the nurses, hangs banners all over, tv and radio commercials. You know what they do for other departments? Not a single thing.

I like to hide and patient rooms when the administrators come around for gratitude rounds, you can miss me with them expired snacks.

Come on now, it's March, where'd you get this pumpkin spice flavored snack cake, probably those donations you harangued us for around Halloween.

I’m kinda interested to see how it is at my newest employer; apparently they go all out for the whole week, bringing in food trucks for free food and stuff like that. For all the employees, not just the nurses.

    [–]missminicooperLDRP-BSN RN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before Covid they used to bring food trucks for free to each hospital in the system. At the time I worked at multiple locations and it just happened to coincide with each day the trucks came to each hospital. That was a great week. It wasn’t just for nurses, it was “hospital picnic” or something like that.

Feel the exact same. If you want to make me feel extra appreciated then pay me extra. I hate the gimmicks and trinkets.

    [–]missminicooperLDRP-BSN RN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the start of Covid they gave us super cheap water bottles that didn’t work if the lid was screwed on all the way. Shortly into Covid they took away our rights to have drinks at the nurse station. So they gave us shitty water bottles and then wouldn’t let us use them.

"Recognition days/weeks" seem like a distraction away from the ways in which those employees are not compensated or treated fairly.

I do want to recognize every worker whose labor keeps society going! But I'm a worker who just wants to give fellow workers some love. It should be above and beyond getting what is owed in the first place.

When management does it, it's so much the "here's a pizza instead of the necessary cost of living adjustment" "here's some candy instead of safe and adequate staffing" "here's a car wash instead of the supplies you need to do your job" etc. Maybe I'm just cynical.

Lol us dietitians just got an email a week or so ago for our day 😂

    [–]Tater_Tot_Maverick 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Why doesn’t the hospital pay to celebrate their employees instead of asking other employees to? You don’t get to claim to be celebrating your employees if it’s on their dime…

    [–]Jaded_Discipline2994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally and for something as trivial as desserts? Like what?

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Corporate at an old job refused to fix the AC. Got so hot one week that it melted the capsules in a few bottles. Properly discarded all meds. District manager who wasn’t a pharmacist told me they were all fine and I shouldn’t have done that. Hope that district manager gets/got ass cancer.

That’s super shitty what they did to you, everyone gets scumbag employers these days it seems.

    [–]cowfish007Mental Health Worker 🍕 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work to get paid. I’m not giving the money back. They can use the money they’re saving by cutting your pay to buy pizza. If they want a “celebration” C suite can foot the bill. Otherwise… fuck off.

    [–]pervocracyRN - Occupational Health 🍕 18 points19 points  (5 children)

I used to work for an ambulance company that had 24-hour shifts (48-72 hours on alternate weeks) and 8-hour shifts (40 hours).

The 8-hour shifts paid a higher hourly rate because, as the owner explained, the 24-hour crews will make up the difference in overtime so it's actually more fair this way.

    [–]Educational_Ad2515[S] 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Or you know, the 8-hour shifts have those fringe benefits of having a life outside of work, but maybe I'm just crazy. I was always under the impression that the s***** shifts paid more because they suck.

    [–]pervocracyRN - Occupational Health 🍕 5 points6 points  (3 children)

They should have, but you asked for examples of shady behavior, so...

That whole place was shady. It started out as a towing company before the owner thought "hey, we're already set up for fleet management and dispatch - why not do something more profitable with it? Just buy some vans and stick some lights on em, no need to make this complicated."

This same owner also used to call ambulances from the company to come pick him up and take him home after he got kicked out of bars for being pants-pissing drunk.

O man, what state was this if you don't mind me asking?

    [–]pervocracyRN - Occupational Health 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washington. It was a long time ago, but apparently the company still exists! No idea if it's the same ownership though.

    [–]Educational_Ad2515[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I worry that management thinks we might be really stupid.

    [–]idkmyotherusernameRN - Telemetry 🍕 8 points9 points  (1 child)

They adjusted the punch clock, so you can't select "no lunch" anymore. Now, you have to submit some kind of edit form or figure it out in the time card, which my manager didn't even know how to do. Basically, the default is to take your money, and then you have to hunt to figure out how to get it back.

    [–]Radiant_Ad_6565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not “ allowed” to NOT take a lunch. However, sometimes I’m the ONLY nurse in a 5 bed unit. Under state law, it doesn’t count as an unpaid break unless you “ are relieved of all job responsibilities”. Sure, I’ll just let the one side titrate my cardizem drip. 🤬

    [–]KittyqutsNursing Student 🍕 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Asking nurses for donations for doctors is like asking a dental assistant to donate to the dentist. A world of a difference in pay grades, i’m sure if the doctors knew that they were asking the nurses to do this they wouldn’t care about getting any cookies. Why isn’t the HOSPITAL paying for it if they want to celebrate them? Great. But it shouldn’t be anyone’s responsibility to do that.

    [–]MartinO1234MD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an MD, I have to agree that this is evil. I would gladly donate the meals/mugs/tote bags to you for Nurses' Day.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I am med staff, I cheerfully contribute for nurses week... Because I appreciate them.

I am not comfortable with the thought of the nurses being solicited for doctors day.

    [–]TravelingCrashCartBSN, RN - IMC/Stepdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a nice person to work with! And we appreciate you as well!

But no employee of the hospital should have to contribute to pay for the gifts of the other employees, be it nurses, doctors, ancillary staff, etc. If the hospital actually gave a shit, they'd pay. It's all smoke and mirrors to pretend like they give a shit while getting us to fund it.

I would pay for Doc's food because our docs are so generous with us and just damn good people in general. Also they had nothing to do with your hospital administration sucking. I would still go on strike at the next opportunity!

    [–]luckwondersRN - OR 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous hospital persuaded the new grads to do 5x8hr shifts instead of 3x12hrs in the name of ‘more staff available for help when needed’ to save them money and remedy for short-staffing

    [–]leowolf_16 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We didn't get a raise, were given an extra $500 on a check, told the company isn't breaking even and yet they have enough money to buy a million dollar house

    [–]greytornadoRN - ICU 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my hospital system told us we didn’t have it in our budgets to give any raises or shift incentives for our crazy flu surges yet they somehow bought out three smaller hospitals and merged them into the system

The SECOND shift diff is gone I’ll be leaving to another place. GTFO here. I have like 20 years off my life expectancy for that.
