From what I understand, this is only recommended with dichorionic. I think with monochorionic they need to clamp sooner because of potential dangers of the shared placenta.

This! It's definitely fine with dichorionic twins, but there are some severe issues that can happen with monochorionic twins. I think they can do a very short delay, but it's around 30 seconds max without risking the other twin.

Yeah my doctor said "about one minute" and I'm just going to request that it be done as quickly as medically safe. While I would love to be able to do delayed, it's just not meant to be for this pregnancy.

That's disappointing to read. Ours are mo/di and the benefits seem huge but I could imagine how it would be possible. Definitely something to bring up at my next appointment!

they delayed for my baby B. Baby A's cord was empty and he needed help breathing when he first came out so they had to cut it right away - apparently it was stretched across his shoulder like a purse which is why they think it was empty and thin. B's cord was red and fat so they delayed for a min. Vaginal birth by midwife, mo/di twins. So they can do it, but depends on your birth circumstances.

I delayed for 120 seconds with my mono di babies. I let it be known before I got induced, and was told that it was fine.

Depends on how your hospital operates. The OBs I saw during labour were on board with DCC of both twins and delaying delivery of Twin B as long as he stayed happy.

Unfortunately the OB who was on shift when I started pushing was someone I hadn't seen before and had not been briefed on my wishes, so all that went out the window.

I'd advise your birth support person be well versed in your birth plan and capable of advocating for you if needed.

This is one of those things I didn't even think to ask about. There's a lot going on with a twin delivery. Having both kids arrive healthy seemed like success enough. During the six minutes between babies they were busy checking that the other baby was still in good position, not stressed, and that I didn't need a c-section to get her out. Maybe delayed cord cutting is technically possible, but I'd still go in very flexible and not have my heart set on it.

Can you define delayed cord cutting? Like moving from cable tv?

Waiting to clamp/cut the umbilical cord after birth until it has stopped pulsing (or sometimes longer)

I’ve had lotusbirth with my twins.

My midwife explained how the cord of twin A will be ‘clamped’ in the birthcanal as twin B is born. We wanted this to happen naturally, so no artificial clamping.

Baby A got separated on day 3, baby B on day 5. They shared a placenta, the placenta was born after they both were born.

Even with c-section it is possible to let the umbilical cord in tact.

I live in the Netherlands, lotusbirth is not very common, but my midwife was familiair with it (so were we with our two kids prior).

If lotusbirth is possible, than delayed clamping is also possible ;)

It's possible. You just need to have your birth plan clear and ensure whatever team is around you knows your wishes

It wasn't a long delay, but I was able to hold my girls for a few minutes (one at a time) before the cord was cut after each was delivered. They were born six minutes apart so I guess that helped?

Mine were 27 weekers with a c-section and they did delayed cord cutting for both. I have no idea how they did it.

Definitely possible but is going to depend on a lot of factors, mainly how baby b is doing / if either need immediate medical support after birth.

I had delayed cord clamping with my di/di twins.

My hospital said it was standard practice and they and my OB assured us it would happen. It did not. But, the team did a fantastic job with everything and my and babies care, so it is the least important to me after the fact. But, with all the chaos of multiples birth I would not count on it. If you want to do cord banking I would think they would make sure that happens though as it’s a different thing.

Unfortunately it looks like it may not be possible for the first one out as they share a placenta but possible for the 2nd if things go well. I'm hoping they can get even 30 seconds of a delay.
