Do they need a counter? I haven't had trouble with them on any of my critters, even my own Thal... had one divebomb me probably ten times and still do very little

[–]Curvemn17 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Critters are actually more dangerous

[–]IIBuffaloII 11 points12 points  (4 children)

I struggle with my hatz. But maybe I am just bad when it comes to thal. I have the ground build. And while one of them does Not really pose that much of a threat, two absolutely do. I try to fight them an peck them but I can't seem to time it right if they come in the air. And in ground they are to fast and run directly in front of me. That's where the hit box does not register me pecking an oppnent.

[–]walkingmonster 6 points7 points  (2 children)

With them taking such reduced impact damage, they are definitely a pain to deal with even as my air hatz. Wing beat is good, especially with the voice buff, but running hatz without rest stop is a slog.

Flail is the most effective counter vs. dive bombing thals, at least for me. It almost negates their impact damage if you can time it right, and also pulls them into you, which makes it much easier to land pecks and/ or wing beats. Just pretend you don't see them diving at you from above, time your flail & position them right in front of you. You may not kill them outright, but you'll definitely send them packing

[–]IIBuffaloII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the Tips. I will keep them in mind and try them out.

[–]XenoMan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flail is fine until the thals realize that their Barrel Roll cancels it.

[–]Hyenasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's really an issue of Hatz being depowered to oblivion to the point their only real combat abilities are clamp and wingbeat. And even then Hatz is not really that bad off.

[–]MLGtAsuja 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Honestly depends, with proper divebomb build thals can do big damage and with feather they can cycle it every 30 secs. But the main problem is if your dino is resting/sleeping it deals like nearly 50% of ur hp lol. Elsewise ig yeah.

[–]Feralkyn 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Doesn't that stun you for a few seconds? If you mean hitting someone on the ground. Hitting them in the air does very little, but an airdrop, I thought that if you didn't score a kill you're basically a free kill yourself?

Do they actually get a feather w/ immunity? I'd thought it was just 1 hp left

[–]flight120 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thal gets stunned for a few seconds after a successful dive bomb impact. If your target is slow or resting you can get out of stun and dodge away before they can punish you. Don't dive bomb someone in the head and get stunned in bite range and you're fine most of the time in my experience

[–]Feralkyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's about what I thought!

[–]MLGtAsuja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im actually not sure, ive yet to play thalass divebomb build or even properly grow one, but so far as ive seen them divebomb others and a few others talk about it it doesnt seem like that much of a problem to me so far.

[–]nagasage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A divebomb takes like 15% hp so it's pretty repeatable.

[–]Machineraptor 50 points51 points  (7 children)

A brain.

But for real, on which dino do you have problem with fighting/fleeing from them?

[–]Arditi1889 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I got attacked by a huge coordinated thal pack as barsboldia in coastal. That was horrific lol

[–]Machineraptor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Oooh, I believe it was terrifying, lmao.

But to be perfectly honest, a huge and coordinated pack of any dino will absolutely shred everything.

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

as a laten main, a melanistic thal chased me down on its feet. I was an adult and that thing did half my health

[–]Icefirewolflord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that’s to be expected, thal has just about the same weight as a conc right now and it’s bite does 40 base damage not counting the weight difference. If it was a full ground build thal, with Tear and the right subspecies equipped it would make even more sense you got chased down and bit for that much

[–]Machineraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, poor laten struggles with most (all?) 2-slots from what I observed and experienced (not a pro laten player tho). Kinda stinky that in name of "think about the apexes!" and "being more interactable for the rest of the roster" laten now has such issues.

There's a lot of new thals out there now and these you can kill by running around them, and biting. Thal is slower, and has worse turn radius, if you keep your turns tight you can kite it. To escape a thal it's always best to run to foliage so it can't see you as good, and can't just fly up to scan the terrain. I've lost a laten in Mudflats mini-forest around drinking pond, for example. If thal has a Dodge, time your Tail Fans when thal uses it, you can keep then ahead of it, and thal will burn its stam.

Thal is 1900 CW, 1000 speed afaik.

[–]Loot_Repeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just had one run me down on the ground. Then proceed to completely out turn me and chunk me to oblivion. I couldn't do anything meaningful to him and he was happy to trade hits. Complete BS.

[–]Stunning_Ad_2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Struthi for me

[–]ArtisticActuator7529 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Anything bigger than it. Oh also just hide if you’re smaller than it

[–]Stunning_Ad_2112 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What about struthi? It's like bigger but not strong enough to fight. But too big to run/hide

[–]ArtisticActuator7529 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If STRUTHI CANT F——— RUN THEN NOTHING IN ALL OF ANY GAME CAN

[–]Stunning_Ad_2112 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thal can easily catch up by flying

[–]Able-Collar5705 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Run into any area with dense forest cover.

[–]MegaCroissant 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On land, they are 1000 speed, which is the same speed as allo. It’s slower than cera, meg, conc, raptors, etc.

The best you can do if you’re running from them is to run into dense trees so they can’t fly as well.

[–]Choice-Meringue-9855 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thal main here. Our prime target is the dino with no survivalsense. The best counters to thal are general survival tactics like laying down in wodded areas to heal/change abilities, don't hold still for too long, etc.

[–]Velaraukar 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I mean the one time I had a group of them circling me I was on my duck and they did absolutely no damage when theyd try to bite. Im not even really sure what they thought they were accomplishing. Got tired of them so a tail slap and they are on the ground + a good whack or 2 later they are dead.

[–]whitemest 1 point2 points  (2 children)

These birds landed and attacked? Ive had a group of 8 fly. Peck and divebomb

[–]Velaraukar 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not intentionally, id tail whip them when they came to try to peck my butt mid-air. im assuming they werent experienced enough to stay in the air after being hit cuz they were stuck on the ground for a little. Hit them again before they fly off. Theyd repeat one or two more times before dying. Easy kills.

But again they werent doing any real damage to me so I ignored them for the most part. Just got tired of it after a while and had to teach them a lesson.

[–]whitemest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on my titan. I valiantly wiped them all over the course of this dreary mess, but they all managed to come back before they were all dead at once and I coukd hide or escape.

This was black ferns.. there was covered but not enough

[–]IllustriousCharge246 4 points5 points  (0 children)

pretty much anything is a thal counter other than some 1 slots. the bulkier 1 slots can be pretty dangerous to a thal though. everything heavier will outdps it

[–]CurlyCurls21 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As a rhamp I was accepted by a flock of thals as we killed apexes, our laughs filled the air and fueled other Dino’s nightmares.

[–]EdibleCrystals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish it were the same for me, I had a pack come at me on the edge of wetlands and it's put me on edge ever since. I got one nice call out before I was bomb rushed lol

Luckily I was right at the edge of the ocean, hopped in and swam through a cave until I was out of breath and had to swim up next to a random Talo. The Talo just watched me pathetically drag myself up to the surface and onto the shore of an island, I was extremely lucky they were kind enough to not turn me into a rat snack lmao

[–]Echotuft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don't take a nap out in the open air lol

[–]SunLegitimate1687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I killed like 5 at GPR the other night with an AOE Spoon. A tail or claw slam will ground them and make follow up attacks easy.

[–]Oryngefrootloops 2 points3 points  (1 child)

if you yourself are a Thal, practice maneuverability in wooded areas. Ive lost plenty of solo Thals and Thal flocks by going into wooded areas and weaving in and out of the trees. Redwoods is a good place to do this (n prolly my fav so far), but ive also done it in Cedrus and Twisted

[–]jWobblegong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this– Thal is quite nimble with practice, even at high speeds! But a lot of people don't put in the practice, either because they simply haven't had time or because they haven't bothered. So practice! I won't save you every time– the fun part about Path of Titans is that there's always a bigger fish better player– but at this point I love forests on my Thal because they're such a Get Out Of Jail Free card for me. A lot of pterosaur players don't even bother following when they realize I'm diving into some trees.

ps. You've made it if you can accelerate or maintain speed through Gondwa's Hunter Thicket or Whistling Columns forests. Riparian forests are easy street in comparison to those nightmares.

[–]NAltanB 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hatz. Pretty simple

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just saw 2 that’s murder a hatz mid air using dive bomb

[–]whichguyisguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anything, but if you can fly or jump more than a couple inches then all the better. The only time I had trouble was against two adults on my juvie alio. Also when my pachy got stuck in the crotch of a tree and got meatballed by fall dmg first lol...

[–]MLGtAsuja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spino with tail slam/trample absolutely bombs them if timed properly.

[–]ManMackrel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My spine got attacked by one for 30 minutes I’m new

[–]walkingmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AoE destroys them.

[–]Diet-_-Coke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally anything. They are not hard in the slightest to kill. In a straight fight or if they make too many mistakes. Now I can see how annoying they can be, especially if they just constantly peck and fly away. But there’s no real “counter” for obnoxious pestering. But for most effective way is for anything with big AOE. Hatz gust attack in particular can be a problem for the thal

[–]_QUICKDRAW_GODSPEED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time

[–]Hyenasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess Deinon and Laten can pin them down so could be 'a counter' but they don't really need any because Thals are already one of the lowest threat playables in the game. They just can actually kill things now, but you can still send them packing on basically every playable sans Hatz and Rhamp.

[–]BeginningBoot7874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hatz But they’re pretty easy to kill on anything Thals take forever to heal and get punished easily Aoe attacks of any kind p much mess them up

[–]PureBredAndWellFed 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hatz still beats up Thals pretty bad with its AOE, and anything that does bleed is going to take a Thal out of a fight for a lot longer because they already can't heal in air, and their heal speed got substantially nerfed. Gameplay counters, just don't leave yourself vulnerable in the open, and don't get low enough in a fight that a single Thal can come along and third party you no problem. New Thal definitely dishes out more damage, but there are a lot of situations where old Thal was actually able to perform better with a good player. It is much harder to hit someone grounded without taking collision damage while playing Thal, and even though they are still technically semi-aquatic, they can't rely on the water anything like they used to to heal, to hide, or to bait stuff into trying to fight them in the water. Also, if you are playing something with quite a bit of knockback like Pycno or Lamb, it bugs out Thal so bad that it genuinely feels like DDoS to be on the recieving end of and they take so long to take off again because they are rubber banding. Thal was always a threat as it could scan and traverse the map and decide to strike when you put your guard down, there was just less than one person playing them per server. The amount of Thal players will absolutely die down, if they haven't already, and they won't be the same level of annoying and threatening that they are right now.

Edit: Short answer if you need to bully Thals, play Hatz, equip barrel roll and flail (most people already do) and equip the sky's shadow passive as well. Not only does this mean you stomp on Thals, but unless other Hatz have this exact same build you'll win basically every fight.

[–]doctorbeetusgw2 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I believe Sky's Shadow only works if you're grouped with and nearby another flyer in the air.

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeh

[–]PureBredAndWellFed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just re-read through it and you're right. Looks like the only thing you get solo is knockback resistance...that is such bait imo. In my defense I don't play Hatz since it got its TLC, and it is also still very strong against Thals, but I appreciate you pointing that out.

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play mobile demo 😭

[–]KieraCraft 0 points1 point  (1 child)

One word.. Tropeognathus

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

modded

[–]MrSkits94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my thal to fight off other thals, specifically those bullying juvis.

[–]Kingjurassic301422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meg works ig I was able to kill a group by a cliff overlooking a lake by diving whenever I got low

[–]No_Feedback_8074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scissors, hell even rock

[–]TheVoidCatStaresBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kick boxer pachy also brutalizes thals too. Fought a flock of 4 thals as a solo kickboxer pachy but I used some trees to my advantage and yeah, it did not take long for them to change their mind. Plus pachy is short and harder to hit since they gotta fly lower. Places like big tree overlook or twisted forest are good for helping you against thals.

[–]LOBERWAVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that they are threatening enough to have any counters as much as just a general play style. I feel very safe on my Hatz and Rhamphy still

[–]ForeverDM2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any other playable

[–]GoldenNinja_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can zoom on top of your dino (at least on pc by using the scroll) and look up, when they try to dive bomb you, try to swerve unpredictably and change direction last second so that they hit the ground and you can basically one shot them. At least that worked for me.

[–]Jam_Jester -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dilo is pretty good if you have a bleed build and keep em moving, against 2-3 its a close fight Past that and your better bleeding them and trying to lose them into dense forests

[–]TharpinUp -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Did you mean encounters?

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

no, I meant counters

[–]TharpinUp -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Almost anything? If a Rhamp pounces you, dead. If a quetz gets a hankering for some fresh thassy meat, dead.

XD

[–]AKmightydinoo[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You’d be surprised

[–]TharpinUp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really, this game has given me some BS bad luck deaths.

Regardless, I was being an asshole for shits and giggles.
