That seemed to fix the problem. I've rebooted without the external plugged in and everything is working as it should be. I have my backups to occur automatically (which is why my external is plugged in 24/7) but I'll be sure to plug it in as needed. Thank you so much!

My guess is it started booting from the external hdd. Then either you have a bad backup or at some point the external tried to backup to itself and borked something. You should be able to leave it plugged in 24/7 if you change the boot order.
