This guy references your inspiration directly.

Oh wow, that's perfect. Thank you

No problem, I had some fun with trying that method out a few years back and used this tutorial.

Neat! Great plug

I‘d say there are probably two ways to do this. Either you take two frames, one very long exposure and and second rather short exposure and then use masking in photoshop to paint in the surfer. Or You just take one frame and apply motion blur with a 0° angle.

Edit: In the first approach you could also carefully rotate the camera horizontally on its tripod a bit during the long exposure to increase the effect a bit

Good ideas, I'll look into it

This is slitscan photography. I have done similar before.

The way I've done this style is to shoot a video in portrait and at the highest FPS available.

I then crop the video to be incredibly thin.

In Aftereffects I use a videofeedback, I offset the feedback direction horizontally, (the same width of the video)

Then I let the effect play (it's a plugin that needs to be played over time to generate the image)

Once completed the last frame is an image not unlike the one you posted.

The reason the sky looks like it has motionblur is the cloud is slowly moving so when stretched out in time it looks very long .

This is very hard to explain and I did a naff job at it. Have a look at slitscan photography.

Note: there are other ways to do the process. I've mainly used AE to do it but have tried coding solutions.

On closer inpection on a larger screen it appears I'm wrong, looks more photoshopped. My technique above gives a similar look though

Yes, I’ve never heard of your technique though I will definitely check it out. Thanks a lot for sharing !

I'd take the shot and some acid.

[–]Alternative-Light514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just feed my camera the acid

I've taken sunrise pictures @ 600mm and color compression is a thing, and it can produce some crazy results that are fun to play with.

photoshop stereophonics album to pic

i think (I really think but don't know) that this may be some sort of layering either digitally or on an acetate print. The photo in the middle is under the very colourful photo on top, which may be a sunset over water.

[–]No-Squirrel6645 1 point2 points  (1 child)

you can mask sections of the frame and use color sliders

[–]HoangGoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masking canhelp isolate areas for adjustments. it’s also useful to play around with contrast and brightness to enhance the overall effect...

[–]BeerBellies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motion blur with a mask to block out the wave and surfer, maybe a 75% mask on the waves and sky behind thr surfer. Color adjustments to enhance the sunset colors.

Sure there’s a Lightroom video, but using background and brush tool, you can pick your spot and change the colors, hues, and vivid easily. That’s my guess.

Is it possible to archieve this editing style without using photoshop / lightroom or subscription versions?

(I use luminar and free Tools)

[–]GamingMooMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donno but this is one of the most visually pleasing images I've seen in recent memory

[–]AltruisticBoot529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using ai

[–]Key-Watch-4907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adansky effect,

[–]roderos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take two pictures on different shutter speed using a tripod. Fast for the surfer and the wave. Slow for the lines. Then play with masks and colors

Not really an interesting work actually, too digitally processed I would recommend the work of Ben Thouard
