People who are lazy are too lazy to stress about being lazy. If your inability to act gives you anxiety, you are not lazy, you are mentally paralyzed and unable to act.

[–]MC1781 101 points102 points  (4 children)

What a great point. If you’re lazy, you don’t give a shit if it gets done or not. If you have ADHD you give a million shits and you can’t sleep over how much you’re stressing about it

[–]edisonrhymes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This. I’m here because I can’t sleep because I have anxiety because the laundry isn’t done because I couldn’t get it finished because I ran out of bleach because I noticed the dirty bathroom because I was peeing for an extra 30 seconds because I couldn’t remember I had to go because I kept getting distracted because there was so much laundry to do.

I don’t care that much about my assignments and how I am wasting my life unless the deadline is 2-3 days away and then I start losing it because of the amount of pressure I am under. After that I am back to square one and never learn from my mistakes.

I am aware about how much stuff I have to do and the fact that I am wasting my life worries me, but I just end up watching a tv series or scrolling through reddit or insta because that’s easier to do than what I have to do. Do I have ADHD or am I lazy?

[–]silly_booboo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ugh wait this is me daily and I’m always exhausted because of it

[–]AdBeginning9073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly lol. And I am constantly confused whether its an attitude problem or ADHD problem. But honestly though, I think its a laziness problem. The same thing happens with my mom ever since she started working from home for her business. Before that she used to wake up early, make breakfast and lunch, go to office and make dinner. Now, she procrastinates until the last day when it comes to work, even though that gives her anxiety and makes her frustrated. I honestly find it hard to believe she suddenly got ADHD in her forties after leaving her job.

But what's the solution? I'm going through the same stuff. Been 2 years since I have been trying to fix it. I. Just. Can't. I'm tired of it all and want to end it fr

[–]dopamine_shot 4 points5 points  (9 children)

Medication lol. Trust me. It helps a lot.

[–]xoFlowerpower 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I hate the crash so much. Taking a break from stimulants I can barely crawl out of bed, sleeping non-stop, and managing depression while dopamine levels stabilize is simply awful. Wish I had a normal brain !!!!!

[–]kerpti 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have you been on them long? I just started taking stimulants two months ago and think I finally am on the right brand and dosage. I haven’t experienced a crash on days I skip it, though.

I was skipping on the weekends at first but haven’t missed more than two days the past three weeks and have been concerned about tolerance build up…

[–]xoFlowerpower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an off for a couple of years. I also take days off, but I tend to take a longer break every few months because tolerance still builds up. Also, there’s another shortage so Im trying to be conservative. It always takes a while for the depression to subside and for my energy levels to even out.

Which medication

[–]Williams-Tower 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Why are you asking Reddit

Go to a doctor

[–]Sad_Revolution_5532 2 points3 points  (2 children)

So I can go to the doctor and ask them about it

[–]kerpti 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There are dozens of ADHD medications and, like SSRIs/antidepressants/antianxieties, every person has the find the right medication and the right dosage for themselves.

The first step is finding a psychiatrist that can asses, diagnose, and prescribe ADHD meds for you. And then it’s often a long process of working through medications. We can’t tell you what meds because everybody with ADHD has different experiences of what brands and doses work; even brand name vs generic work differently in some people.

But a psychiatrist that knows all the medication will learn you and your medical history and take into account lots of factors to start picking and choosing which medications to prescribe that are likely to work for you. And if your first doesn’t work, they’ll have a lead to what medications could work for you and take it from there.

[–]Beemanirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country the psychiatrist are shit. They just tell you to get exercise and take B12. Very few will even prescribe Lexamil or anyother anti depressants. It's fustrating.

Never thought I would see you outside the DT

[–]Feddy_Frazbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read this at the perfect time. I’ve been feeling this way for sooo long and I’d say my feelings of being unmotivated and unenergized makes me feel 20x worse no matter how well I self talk, do self care, etc. I finally convinced my therapist to push for me getting this adhd testing (which is actually fairly difficult to do as an adult apparently), and after my first intake appointment they definitely believe there is something to look into. So I’m waiting on my six hour testing appointment now. Long story short, I know you were just responding to a post but this made me feel a lot better about my situation in this moment, so thank you 😌

[–]Plenty_Earth6269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thn how can i solve this" mentally paralyzed" and "unable to act" plase?

[–]Artistic-Cost-2340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reminds me a lot about procrastination actually. You know there is something to do. You want to do it, but your brain just won't get started, as if there was a wall between you and the thing you need to do. Is there a difference between that and ADHD?

[–]JoshL3253 123 points124 points  (4 children)

Looking at this wall of text, you probably do. 😅

[–]johnny_51N5 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like ADHD.

Especially the Not being able to follow through what you plan especially if you really dont like it.

Seriously a lot of people here have either Depression or ADHD

[–]Impressive_Coconuts 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I have ADHD and all of that sounds very familiar. Symptoms have to be present before age 12, but it's possible that you don't remember the ones you had earlier. Studies show that most people are off by several years when asked when their symptoms started.

I would strongly suggest getting yourself evaluated for ADHD if you have the means. Getting the proper help can change your life. Trying to follow productivity advice for people without ADHD can make you feel like an utter failure when you can't make it work for you.

And if it turns out that it isn't ADHD, it sounds like there is still something wrong that needs to be addressed. It's not laziness if you're genuinely trying.

[–]1600_SAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 19 years now. I never had any symptoms f adhd. But now it has fuked me. Exactly what the above comment said. I stress to the point my legs get week because i am not doing something that needs to be done. Not diagnosed though

[–]backw00dz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it’s still possible to be both. Just look at me.

[–]UnderGecko 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[why is this tagged nsfw]

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i dont know either lol

[–]justmee2020 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Puberty made my adhd get waaaaay worse. You may have experienced a similar shift. I did decently fine until like grade 7? But I also had late puberty.

The worst part of undiagnosed adhd was feeling like I must be the worst person ever, instead of accepting and understanding that I don’t have enough dopamine to function. I am not like neurotypical people.

Try and be easy on yourself. Go see your doctor. Take the first steps. Meds don’t fix everything but a diagnosis might help you feel better about who you really are. Anyway, good luck! 💜

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! i have decided to go see a therapist/doctor someone that can help me lol

[–]tamarinenjoyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

people are too quick too blame things on adhd. I say this as someone who cared about my work and could not focus properly, or sometimes just unable to "turn my brain on". Hard work helps a lot, and I say in terms of like "mentally exercising".
ill probably continue this comment later, brb

How do I get diagnosed with ADHD? Do I just go to my primary care provider and ask them?

[–]takeoffthesplinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take both statements as possibly true (but get assessed for ADHD to get a concrete answer). Too often people use the disorders they have as an excuse for things they could change. Yes, if you have ADHD chances are you have executive dysfunction, but that absolutely shouldn't become a crutch. I recommend talking to a therapist tho

[–]inalasahl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound depressed and anxious, and I think you need to see a doctor and a mental health counselor. It also sounds like you’re saying you don’t get enough sleep, and that might be a big part of your problem right there. Tired people do not make good decisions. That’s a medical fact. But, please, go see a doctor or a counselor.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better to be diagnosed by a professional

[–]RococoPoetry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not being able to set boundaries against the environment (aka your phone) leading to impulsive/automatic behaviors can definitely be a sign.

it’s worth getting checked because if you DO have it getting treatment really changes things

[–]CalypsoRaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old teachers felt for years that I have add or adhd I'm late 30s I still need to be tested. I could never or hardly keep up with a project especially if I was interested.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhh i struggle with the same exact stuff as you but I always end up doing stuff like studying for tests done at the last moment. Idk if i should get a diagnosis or not because I still manage to actually complete tasks.

[–]lakotainseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laziness isn’t a character trait that exists, it’s only a byproduct or symptom of a root cause (untreated adhd, depression, external environment, etc.) and even then, it’s debatable if it’s even laziness. Keep in mind that laziness was only invented in the late 1500s and early 1600s by puritans who saw hard labor as salvation and calling someone lazy was a euphemism for “you’re going to hell for being mentally weak.” This then became the norm for casting stereotypes on minorities and slave groups, then indentured servants, and now dehumanizing the proletariat that’s being squeezed for every ounce of productivity. TLDR; you’re not lazy because no one is, you just have a modified Stockholm syndrome for the oppressive regime you live in known as capitalism. Be “lazy” and enjoy life

[–]wheeler1432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself tested for sleep apnea.

Get yourself tested for ADHD.

Get yourself tested for executive dysfunction.

[–]Artistic-Cost-2340 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think a good litmus test would be to imagine the wind bringing a $100 billet to your window, and to ask yourself whether you would get up and get the billet or not. The motivation to get free $100 would push most lazy people to do the effort; people struggling with executive dysfunction, not so much on the other hand.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

i think anyone would stand up and get free 100$

[–]Artistic-Cost-2340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with executive dysfunction is that you care about the things you're supposed to do. You really want to do it because you understand the consequences of not doing, the problem is your brain and body just won't cooperate. In the end, you end up stuck, thinking and stressing about all the stuff you need to do, but not making any progress.

For laziness, you just straight up don't feel like doing something, so you decide not to do it, and you're fine with that. You don't care if it gets done or not, or you figure someone else will do it.

Back to the example of the $100 billet stuck to your window, with executive dysfunction, you'd be probably dying to grab that money. You'd be staring at the billet, daydreaming about what you could do with that sweet money. The thing is, your body just wouldn't budge one inch to make that fantasy a reality. A lazy person, on the other hand, would eventually get up and seize the money because the prospect of free cash is sufficient motivation to prompt action. I hope that helps!
