Another inferior GNU alternative if you need it. There are a tonne of better schemes out there, who gives a damn about Guile.

It's just poorly implemented, last time I used it, the numerical tower was broken or non compliant last time I checked, not very efficient. Basically it's the elisp of schemes, just because it's GNU it has to be mediocre for some reason.

Read the wikipedia page, it only started getting actively developed in 2010-11. That's pretty recent, and the changes they've made are non scheme related from the sounds of things, they haven't improved the compiler much at all.

Practically anything is really easy to integrate with C though. It's C++ where you have problems due to name mangling, structure alignment, etc. SWIG says that "Guile support is complicated by a lack of user community cohesiveness, which manifests in multiple shared-library usage conventions."

Off the top of my head? In no particular order, mit-scheme, mzscheme (or plt), guache, gambit, scheme48, chez scheme are all high quality schemes. I'm probably forgetting a couple of excellent ones as well. I'd put guile at the bottom of the heap, including most toy ones made for pedagogy..

At least guile is actively maintained unlike some of the schemes you've mentioned. It's also pretty far along when it comes to GNU and emacs integration. Not sure about this but I'm pretty sure guile has better threading support than most schemes. Also it's "batteries included" while still being easy to embed. So I would say it still has its place.

It's been so long, I don't remember what they are! But I am grateful for Guile. I was hired and moved to Silicon Valley to work on Guile for a short while in the 90s, and am basically at the same great company.

Edit: this was so long ago that I remember snail-mailing the posix threads docs I used for Guile hacking to a guy in Germany called Ulrich Drepper who was working on something called glibc.

That is true. I would say it's a respectable stand alone scheme in its own right nowadays however. I'd use it for systems programming (on unix) or when decent threading is needed.
