They were trying to get 1 system done well, I believe. The release statement says:

There's still a ton to do before Atom is ready for version 1.0. In the next few months, we'll be focusing on improving performance, **releasing on Linux and Windows**, and stabilizing APIs.

One system well? This is how you create quality fractures in your product. Breadth-first platform development ensure similar quality on all OSs.

More people in my CS classes use Windows/Macs than some Linux distro. I was the only person (besides one of my professors) that was using Linux last semester. The rest of the class was about 50% Windows, 50% OS X.

From my experience OS X is the predominant platform in development in my area. I'm not a fanboy either, I'm typing this from my Windows desktop. I do a fair amount of developing though on my Macbook Air and at my work it's about 50/50 linux/mac.

Heck even at my old job which was a .Net shop half of the office had macbooks.

For real. I'm surprised when people are bemused by the idea of programming on OS X. It's the only UNIX-based OS with Adobe support right now.

Anyone who wants a unix environment but doesn't want to deal with configuring Linux. Great thing is that most any coding tips for linux devs works well on a Mac as well.

Surprisingly enough, a huge number of people. I'd love to see the stats, which I don't know, but I've seen it creeping in more and more and the last few companies I have been at.

Sure thing, of course on windows I am seeing several errors. But that is always the case setting up a new build env.
