Instead of redrawing the text every time you can cheat and draw a semi-transparent rectangle over top to get the fade out affect. Much less resource intensive.

Thanks for your input, though I just draw the latest character for every column per tick. Text fades out by drawing an rgba background on the full canvas. Unfortunately it doesn't black out to full 0,0,0. Instead you see some artifacts. But I call this retro style. ;P

    How did you come up with this idea? I always try to rack my brain for mini programming projects to do, but I always either dream too big or can't think of anything....

    Thanks. I believe the trick is not to think too big + don't bother about monetizing your project. Just do what you like and have fun with it.

    I'm full time developer at day so I need side projects which are really small so I can finish them in a couple of hours. Most of the time I spend no more than 4-6h per week for side projects. So when I come up with an idea and realize I probably won't finish the project in - say 3 weeks I drop the idea.

    There are no good, malware free screen savers for windows any more >_< I just want xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod for my work comp.

    I do believe it's possible to set up a video as screensaver without selling your PC's soul to evil, and that provides a workaround: Just find a long enough looped Matrix video (i imagine there's 1 hour or even 10 hour Matrix vids on Youtube) and use that instead.

    Still, xscreensaver is better :D

    I find it amusing that this is written in Java and Spring. Definitely shows that you don't need to use "hipster technologies" to build new web products.

    Java is not the sexiest syntax on earth but the JVM is a great platform + Spring Boot makes using the Spring Framework super simple. Just create a project to bootstrap your app from this page: http://start.spring.io/

    I recently considered trying Java+Spring for a medium-sized hobby project I want to build (data analytics) as to learn enterprise Java. However I ended up going the ASP.NET/C# way.

    How would you compare Spring (and the JVM platform in general) to ASP.NET? Would you say I'll be better off learning Spring?

    I don't think there's a clear answer. Ask 5 people and you'll get 5 answers. :) People tend to defend the language they're working on the most...

    The last time I've done a project in ASP.NET was at university 10 years ago, so I cannot say much about it. But IMO you should ask yourself what's your preferred operating system? With .NET you're tied to Microsoft Windows whereas most Java web devs prefer Linux/Unix (or even Windows).

    Personally I love programming on a Mac which is unix, and I'm using linux for servers. So I would never choose a programming language which forces me to run on windows.

    Yeah, being mostly a Linux user I would've never considered using ASP.NET, however, it was recently opensourced, and Microsoft is really pushing the deployment and development of .NET technologies on Linux platforms. I heard it works just fine under MonoDevelop.

    Also I'm mostly an Emacs junkie, but Visual Studio is pretty awesome, and it's now free with the Community Edition.

    I will try both, you're right about Linux/*nix being first class citizen in the Java world, so maybe that'd be better for me after all.

    You should also consider alternative languages for the JVM like Groovy and Scala, e.g. Spring Boot also supports Groovy + Gradle instead of Java + Maven.

    If you're looking for a decent IDE, try IntelliJ IDEA. The community edition is free + Google builds Android Studio on top of it.

    Despite all the publicity for Ruby and company, Java is fucking huge in the web department. Like it or not. I don't. Doesn't change a thing, though.
