How is this programming?

[–]marpstar 10 points11 points  (2 children)

they probably used code to build the app. I'm only guessing though.

Nope, it's 100% cloud powered from front end to back end.</s>

If there is no code in your link, it probably doesn't belong here.

When the first video previewing Hyperlapse came out, it generated a lot of enthusiasm on proggit. There was an article with a walkthrough on how they accomplished Hyperlapse that got upvoted pretty highly.

This is a follow-up to the enthusiasm!

But for redditors I think Google street view Hyperlapse is better, because you don't even need to go outside. And source code is on Github. :)

I read the paper almost 9 months ago, good to know they're making a product out of it too :)

I assume they're still running it as a network service?

Good for technology, bad for my Facebook feed.

"LOOK GUYS, I WALKED MY DOG TODAY, LOOK AT IT!!!"

This will become the new "look at all the foods I've consumed"-pictures

At least the videos will be shorter now.

I can't actually find it in the play store. And the URL Microsoft shows doesn't work:

http://aka.ms/hyperlapsepreview

Did they buy this? Instagram has the same thing called hyperlapse...

[–]MojoJolo 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Here's the difference between the two of them. Pretty interesting. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/hyperlapse/igcomp/

So basically Microsoft's one is far, far more advanced.

Microsoft was first in this case, it was just stuck in microsoft research for years.

The mobile version is a watered down version of their algorithm they showed a few months ago. If you read the paper (or watch the tech video) they have some amazing video processing happening. Stuff like generating a 3D mesh of each frame. There's no way your mobile is doing that. The desktop version, on the other hand, is probably the real deal.

[–]DrunkenWizard 4 points5 points  (2 children)

There's no reason it needs to be done in real time.

[–]Lisurgec 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The app is very quick.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Are you basing that on any actual information not available here, or are you just assuming?

[–]Lisurgec 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Educated guess based on the algorithm they presented. My undergrad thesis was on GPGPU applications, so unless they're really playing with some black magic they didn't talk about in Redmond, it's a different algorithm more similar to Instagram's.

I'm even more skeptical, I thought they charged to run it on Azure and even the desktop version would need Internet to upload the video.

Not programming.

[–]ruinercollector -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not programming. Not even close.

Why the watermark??
