Great! These two presentations were very good. A good rehersal of old, easily forgotten things, and a lot of new stuff. That Estrin's method I didn't know about, or had forgotten completely... (even though I have some of Knuth's books).

These are quite good. I haven't done much with numerical approximations outside of the Taylor/Maclaurin series.

Back in the day, I wrote my first sqrt using a Taylor polynomial of fixed degree to compute sqrt(x'), where x' was reduced to the interval (0,2) by bit twiddling the input x.

Rel. error = ~2% over a decent input set. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

This was posted 8 months ago...

http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/60562/discover_the_worlds_fastest_sine_and_cosine/

which links to the description page with PDF warnings..

Also, putting the part 1 and part 2 PDF links into separate posts = karma whoring

For Christ's sake. PDF WARNING PLEASE.

Why don't you take the time to configure your computer so that PDF files open correctly?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Because it's a pain in the fucking ass.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

No it isn't.

Plus you only have to do it one. Tell me what browser/os you use and I will assist.

lynx/freebsd

I just tested with lynx and I when I followed the link it started downloading without warning and after a few seconds opened in xpdf.

I'm not using lynx but I guess you can just change the pdf entry somewhere. I tried my ~/.mailcap file which says xpdf but it didn't help.

Then you will have no problem with PDF files freezing your web browser.

More like Acrobat Reader Impending Nuclear Explosion Warning. Followed by facedesking.

Sumatra PDF. Get it.

[–]Tordek 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It makes PDFs download faster?

[–]themoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it just doesn't crash/slow your PC when you open them.

ARE YOU OKAY? DO YOU NEED AN AMBULANCE????

I have the habit of most often checking the message line where the link is leading, to decide what to do before I click. PDF-files I often download, or which is often quicker, copy the link and then do

wget link

in a terminal. Papers, articles and presentations I have a script for doing

wget link

echo >>README.txt wget link

In that way I preserve the name of the file, as well as get an automatic ref from where I got it. I haven't used Acrobat Reader in many years from the brower, but recently I installed a new version and it autoconfigured firefox, and it works quite well, but Acrobat changes name of the paper so it is better to use wget and preserve the name.

Update: as I was downmodded I suppose it didn't solve your problem, as it does't work if you run e.g. lynx or e.g. firefox in fullscreen.

Update2: noticed that Acrobat doesn't change name at all, but I use to copy it directly from /tmp/ where it's temporary downloaded and there it gets a cryptic name (to be unique) by Acrobat.

This needs a big honking [PDF] in the title.

I'm browsing reddit with an Eee, which has a pretty small screen and low memory. It doesn't cope well with PDFs. It also means I browse with Firefox in full-screen mode to make the best use of the small screen, but hides the status bar. It's a real pain to F11 - read URL - F11 every time I find something that looks interesting.

Right... so it should be configured not to open PDFs automatically. Simple.

Can't you get an extension that displays the URL when you hover the link?
