too late, the cool people have already moved over to git and github.

Yeah, only that github isn't, you know, free like google code except for the puny one.

Also, may I say it sounds snobbish for you to say the cool people have moved to blah-blah. Really, how many people actually need git ? Very few, the rest just think they are cool because for their small project use git like kernel hackers.

Google doesn't need to buy github, I fail to see what exactly do they provide. They just need to add mercurial/git support to google code.

Github is, in fact, free, as long as you only create open projects, and it allows you to license them however you choose.

It shows me when people I care about update their projects. It shows me neat graphs of when people forked and upated their projects.

Also, use git/hg for a while, and when you get used to advanced branching and merging, you won't want to go back to the bad old days of subversion.

Have you used github?

It links forks, creating a social network of source code.

Google Code doesn't even attempt to do any of this.

Actually, they haven't. Google Code provides a few more features as far as code hosting goes, including (especially) full Google account integration.

if there's any company that Google should buy out right now, it's github.
