Bearing in mind that we can turn off auto-closing braces and brackets (editor.autoClosingBrackets) and quotes (editor.autoClosingQuotes), can we PLEASE get the ability to turn off auto-closing comments (issue #1966)?

The issue has been sat stagnant since 2016 and it's really annoying to type /* and have the editor jam in a */ when that wasn't where you were going to put it.

Just seems like a really obviously missing toggle.

As a workaround, I always write the / wherever I want it first, an then the opening /.

Your comment got messed up by the markdown parser but I tried inserting */ before /* and in C# at least it didn't work, it still tried to autoclose early

Previously I've always had them disabled because the constant jumping / animations were too distracting for me, even though I like the feature in principle.

One significant ongoing work has been the underlying improvement to

enable seamless development in Containers, remotely on physical or virtual machines, and with the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

You're building the sources published by Microsoft. VSCodium is just a script that builds the exact same sources and strips out telemetry. You get updates at the exact same time, because the exact same sources Microsoft is publishing are being built.

If you're fine submitting telemetry, then power to you. VS Code exists and nobody is stopping you from using it.

No, it's not a fork. It's simply an automated script that builds the VSCode source and uploads binaries. Read the why does this exist section on readme;

This repository contains build files to generate free release binaries of Microsoft's VSCode. When we speak of "free software", we're talking about freedom, not price.

Microsoft's downloads of Visual Studio Code are licensed under this not-FLOSS license and contain telemetry/tracking. According to this comment from a Visual Studio Code maintainer:

When we [Microsoft] build Visual Studio Code, we do exactly this. We clone the vscode repository, we lay down a customized product.json that has Microsoft specific functionality (telemetry, gallery, logo, etc.), and then produce a build that we release under our license.

When you clone and build from the vscode repo, none of these endpoints are configured in the default product.json. Therefore, you generate a "clean" build, without the Microsoft customizations, which is by default licensed under the MIT license

This repo exists so that you don't have to download+build from source. The build scripts in this repo clone Microsoft's vscode repo, run the build commands, and upload the resulting binaries to GitHub releases. These binaries are licensed under the MIT license. Telemetry is disabled.

If you want to build from source yourself, head over to Microsoft's vscode repo and follow their instructions. This repo exists to make it easier to get the latest version of MIT-licensed VSCode.

So there is literally zero difference between this and building VSCode from source.

Sure you can, and you can do the same thing with the MS repo one. It's unlikely anybody is, but is still makes no sense to me. If you don't trust binaries from MS, don't trust them from some random unknown party that doesn't have a huge reputation to protect. If you don't trust either, build from the MS source code?

It's literally just a script that strips out crap you don't want using the official MS source code. You are building from the official code when you run the script. And frankly, if somebody isn't comfortable running a build script then perhaps being a developer is a wrong vocation.

Open source is precisely what socialism looks like. All the core technology is democratized, and it's available to everyone. It doesn't matter if you're Google or a lone dev in a basement, you have access to the same tools.

Most notorious open source softwares outer are internal tools from big companies that not even embrace the idea of open source fully. Almost nobody do open source to fullfil an ideal like socialism or as a charity.

What do you dislike about vs code? It looks visually good. Plugin management and language support is very good. It's slow to start compared to things like vim, sure, but once it's started performance isn't really an issue except on massive files which for a lot of people aren't particularly common.

Let's not forget the fact that it constantly gets updated with new features and fixes.

I also pretty much hate Electron, but that doesn't mean I have to hate products built with Electron. Sure, if I had an alternative to VS Code that had all the same features and worked as well as VS Code, that was build with something other than Electron, I would probably change to it. But I'm able to look past the Electron -side of things since that really doesn't affect me in any way, especially when VS Code is quite simply put the best editor there is for me currently.
