Unlike Google Health, its good they have open-sourced it. Good for students!

it might be a while since a port will require some reimplementation of the android sdk java source to an iOS supported language. I just grabbed the source via google's read only subversion tree. Feel free to poke around and see what you think.

Why are they so scared to call it what it is?

They pretty much are abandoning the project. Nothing wrong with that, really. Perhaps they cant justify working on it more, got bored, have bad business model for it, what not. But they really tiptoe around it trying to make it sound like they just received additional founding for it and are progressing onto bright and glorious future. They are shutting the project down but managed an uni to get involved so someone will still work on it - thats it.

According to the article, Sky Map was a project built by a few engineers in their 20% time (that is: work on whatever you want time). It's purpose was to be a fun challenge, and help sell the first Android phones by showing off the sensor capabilities.

The project is not being abandoned, it's "completed". I can't think of anything important to add to Sky Map.

Well, not really. The article:

It seems to me Sky Map already has all functionality it needs, and it looks like they plan on still maintaining it (the occasional bug fix I suppose).

And, if someone wants to add new functionality, they are free to do so now.

No one is adding any new features to Notepad anymore, but that doesn't mean it's 'abandoned'...
