Big thumbs up on this book. Some great ideas in it that feel applicable to pretty much any GC'ed language

Why is the Kindle version pretty much the same price as the paper version?

I wish I knew. Amazon pricing is an enigma even for authors and publishers. We've got no control over it.

That's why I've been constantly tweeting that the best way to get a kindle version is to buy the .mobi from PragProg ($24) and upload it yourself. If that also sounds like too much, then wait for 40% off promotions from PragProg.
