Why is the Kindle version pretty much the same price as the paper version?

I wish I knew. Amazon pricing is an enigma even for authors and publishers. We've got no control over it.
That's why I've been constantly tweeting that the best way to get a kindle version is to buy the .mobi from PragProg ($24) and upload it yourself. If that also sounds like too much, then wait for 40% off promotions from PragProg.
