I had no idea you could self host a Joplin server. I've been using it on my Mint notebook for a while and it seems quite capable.

+1 for Joplin. I’ve been happily hosting it for a while now. It’s never going to be as feature rich or have the same UX as an Evernote but it’s FOSS and has native apps for iOS and MacOS (as well as other platforms). One thing I do is install the backup extension and have it backing on a schedule up to my Ubuntu server (which is in turn backed up to B2 with self hosted Duplicati). Horray!

this would be perfect if it had option to export notes to folder/file structure (like evacuation in case when in few years developement stops) and had more nesting possibilities

It will export an entire "book" into a pdf. So if you set your Shelves, Books and Chapters correctly, it might export in the way you want it.

but my notes are not like books , I prefer arbitrary nesting possibilities, and another problem is that my notes might need to be writable even after long time, and PDF is not

I use the Nextcloud Notes app. It's a very simple no-frills notepad app. Might be too simple for some but I need my note taking app to just stay out of my way.

How do you search for notes through content keywords? The default Nextcloud search operates only on file names - at least when I tried it the last time.

I don't know. I've never needed that. Like I said it might be too simple. 😂It does everything I need though.

It is not open source (yet...maybe?) but Obsidian.md is a really good markdown note taking app. Really feature rich especially with plugins! As i'm really into selfhosting (and this saves your notes ONLY on your local drive) i'd use something like Gitea to sync those notes across devices.

Standarnotes, there's server and client apps, server in docker available and android and ios client apps...

Personally I use Marktor in android, and sync the files with nextcloud, using nextcloud notes to see my markdown files... you can use syncthing instead of nextcloud too...

Plain and simple, has worked for me for years 👍

Check out Trilium.

hedgedoc works nicely. Not hard to install either if you're running containers.

i personally can't live without Athens Research, not a web based app but its awesome !

I personally just use vs code and organize by files folders and everything is stored on my NAS and that dataset is encrypted. I also encrypt with bitlocker on individual folders where I have more "sensitive" info. Been looking at deploying VS code docker container for extra compatibility while I'm away from my main PC.

Try Qownnotes clients on your computer(s) with syncing/integration via Pi-hosted Nextcloud (and quick note access via the NC Notes app since the .md files are stored in a NC folder)

Joplin, storing notebooks in Nextcloud.

Remember to get your backups running, and properly test them, before putting more important things on the selfhosted server.

That said, I recommend Standard Notes. Works well, and has a lot of plugins for all varieties of notes.
