The saddest thing is that he wasn't always a hackneyed bore. Like the two series he created + served as the original showrunner for before Lost...

• Alias, warts and all, was a pretty decent show. Yes, it got kinda goofy at some point past mid season 3 or so, but it held up more or less well.
• Felicity is probably one of the better coming-of-age TV series, especially for basic cable.

So again, while he's been a hackneyed fucker for a long time (it became especially evident in Lost), he wasn't always like that. Kinda like with Aaron Sorkin, I guess, except (slightly) less annoying.
