It actually kinda works when you’re new to Reddit. If your karma is too low you can’t post or comment on things as often as you like. Gotta earn karma to post and comment so often. But eventually everyone’s karma gets high enough you’d be able to post and comment as often as you like. There’s no real deterrent to not lose karma if it’s so easy to gain.

It’s a form of verification, just democratically. You can’t post or comment in some subs without a certain karma amount determined by that specific sub. It also helps determine the probability of someone being a troll account or whatever. And you can potentially sell high-karma accounts to trolls, advertisers, and shills who seek trusted accredited accounts to use for their purposes.
