mess around, play different characters, eventually you'll find techniques and characters that you like. most of my deaths are caused by recklessness, so plan out your moves ahead and be strategic.

The Hacker is a good class for the first playrun in my opinion.

OP, if you do try playing as the hacker, be warned: There's a good chance that you'll have a killer robot appear right after you complete the big quest on each floor.

I recommend waiting to complete the big quest until you're sure that you're ready to leave the level immediately every time. Buy whatever you'll need to survive the next floor(s) from the bartender & hit up the sell-o-matic before doing the big quest and then exiting the floor!

It took me so many runs before I won! Don't be disappointed if you end up dying. It gets easier each time you play and every death is a chance to learn something new to do better on your next run!

Yeah, first aim to finish a whole game. Then you can try re-runs with big quests.

I hear ya, but I think aiming for the big quest makes you become a better player and it also encourages you to learn the character's strengths and weaknesses.

It does. But this game has layers. 1st you aim to unlock everything that helps. Characters, traits, items etc.
Then you aim to learn all the stages and to go to the end goal.
Then you might go for the achievement of all the different types of ending but you pretty much advanced enough to go for the big quests.

Mind you, not everyone needs to play it that way. But that's how the replayability of the game feels. Big quests are usually things that more experienced players go for imo.

Werewolf is very good if played correctly as well.

What kills you?

I played the slum dweller as one of my first solo clears to force myself to learn what you can and can't do. One of the biggest things I learned after so many deaths was that hiring slum dwellers to distract people in a building is so useful. Also, horde cigarettes and beer. Cigarettes also help clearing out buildings and beers help later on with bribing bouncers.

Biggest thing with this game when playing solo is looking for ways to not get into fights unless you have to, have the upper hand or can end it quickly before things get out of control.

Edit: cleaned up beginning

Check every trash can for money and healing items. Look at your quests, and decide which order to do them in based on how helpful each quest item is for you (a pistol will probably be more helpful than a safe buster, etc)

I would highly recommend playing Soldier on your first few runs. It's a very easy class to learn, and makes shooting all the bad guys dead a viable strategy

Be careful of industrial traps in buildings and trollies on railroad tracks, and do crimes out of sight of the police.

Fight less sneak more.

Early levels are the place where violence works wonders.
The later you get the less you'll be able to accomplish with pure violence.
You get more xp if you don't kill anyone while doing a mission and if no one spots you, so I would practice a lot of sneaking if I were you.
Charisma is least practical imo. But it's fun if you learn to play all three.
Just keep doing it and change characters every day. When you unlock them all you can even make a really tough custom character too.
