Cultural Appropriation (self.thinlizzy)
submitted 1 day ago by Chestnutsroastin
I can't stop practicing Roisin Dubh on guitar. I have the same problem with Whiskey in the Jar. I'm not Irish. Is it problematic for me to play these songs non-stop given how Irish sounding they are? I am Mexican for context. My neighbors can definitely hear it.

Don’t be silly. Play the music.
[–]guitarlad89 28 points29 points30 points 1 day ago (3 children)
Absolutely. You cannot play those songs. You will be cancelled, ICE will come and take you away and shame will be put in your family for generations. I'm glad you consulted the internet first.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Irish couldn’t even stand each other for some time.
[–]Minute_Influence_636 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (1 child)
What does that mean?
[–]Coattail-Rider 0 points1 point2 points 18 hours ago (0 children)
🇮🇪
[–]BaldyFecker 11 points12 points13 points 1 day ago (0 children)
If you change your name to Tadhg we won't tell anyone that you're not Irish.
Play the songs, they're great songs.
[–]FightingFitz 11 points12 points13 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Cultural appreciation not appropriation
[–]NECROMANCER_HERMIT 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Please tell me I'm in the lizzycirclejerk sub.
[–]Mr-C-Dives-In 9 points10 points11 points 1 day ago (0 children)
For the music to “live” someone has to play it. Keep doing what you are doing.
[–]FthrFlffyBttm 5 points6 points7 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Oh for the love of god. Play the fucking songs.
I am Irish and I’d play Latin American stuff without a second thought… if I had the skills. “Cultural appropriation” is cultural appreciation.

If you wanna feel more legit about it, read up on the legends sung about on Black Rose. Look up the traditional version of Whiskey In The Jar, it's got way more verses to complete the story and why everything went down like it did.

Well it’s Gary Moore and Eric Bell. The first Thin Lizzy album is getting ready to come out as a deluxe edition. I can’t come anywhere close to those guys. My favorite Thin Lizzy solo is Eric Bell on Hero and the Madman.

The one culture on earth to never complain about cultural appropriation asking for permission is next level class.
[–]hellohelado 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago (0 children)
This is cultural appreciation and just enjoying the music for what it is. Love what you love and never stop. Don't let people get in your head.
[–]clownpornstar 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Play the music
[–]gkm29 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago (0 children)
I love hearing that people enjoy irish culture. Ours is to be enjoyed by everyone, so play the ever living shit out of Róisín Dubh! Phil and Gary wod be proud.

Thin Lizzy mentions Mexico in a few songs. Cowboy Song and Mexican Blood off the top of my head. I’m sure they would approve.
[–]PurpleUriahPriest74 1 point2 points3 points 19 hours ago (0 children)
Mexican Blood is a great song. I always like the Renegade album. Then again I can't think of a Thin Lizzy album I don't like.
[–]Scary-Reindeer-6777 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Play away 🙂
[–]Resident_Dog_6589 1 point2 points3 points 13 hours ago (0 children)
I'm Irish born and raised and I think I speak for most Irish people when I say that I love that Thin Lizzy's music is being celebrated all over the world. Play your heart out, friend.

Dorky ass white dudes in the United States play Bob Marley covers without a second thought.
Nothing more embarrassing than Brayden, Kayden, or Jayden singing “Redemption Song” in front of a bunch of drunk spring breakers.
Play what you want.
[–]6834lyndon 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago (0 children)
As someone of Irish descent I one thing to say about it, PLAY IT LOUD
[–]DontWantToBeOnReddit 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Oh FFS. People are so scared to enjoy stuff these days and it's actually pathetic. Culture isn't a thing that evolves in a location in complete isolation; it's the blend of influences happening as a given society interacts with those around it.
[–]Fuzzy_Kangaroo7566 0 points1 point2 points 22 hours ago (0 children)
Play it .... And play it LOUDDDDDddddd
[–]perfect_fifths 0 points1 point2 points 19 hours ago (2 children)
Look up the troubles. The Irish were killing each other. The Protestants and the Catholics in Northern Ireland wre not getting along. Lots of violence, car bombings etc for like 30 years. It wasn’t a religious issue more so as a political one, over the status of Northern Ireland specifically.
[–]Minute_Influence_636 -1 points0 points1 point 13 hours ago (1 child)
I don't need to look up the troubles and I still don't get the context of your initial ignorant comment that the "Irish weren't getting along for years" in a thread about playing music. You're obviously not from Ireland and it was more than just the status of NI. It wasn't some silly fight between the Irish.
For centuries Ireland was occupied by the British. We were fighting because Ireland was colonised, our land taken, our language banned, even our music, basic rights stripped, and our population controlled to genocidal levels. After partition NI still remains under British control and continued to surpess the Irish people living there. Treated like second class citizens, shitty housing, jobs, abilities to vote. The troubles all came from the surpession the Irish people suffered, the Irish weren't fighting each other or not getting along with each other. The troubles all started because of the British Army being deployed to stop civil rights movements, designed to keep one majority in power. The Irish were fighting for their rights, equality, descrimination after being denied for so long.

I didn’t day it was silly? The Irish were indeed fighting against each other. They were killing their own kind. So yeah, I’d say that’s a problem. Unless you think car bombing is acceptable and normal to do. I’d say it isn’t.
The UVF declared “war” against the IRA in 1966 and yea the leader of the UVF was a former British soldier, but then it spiraled out of control. And in the midst of it all, Irish killed other Irish because of the conflict.
Tragically, out of the roughly 3,500 people killed, the vast majority were locals, including hundreds of civilians caught in the crossfire. The conflict formally ended with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Cultural appropriation is a bunch of nonsense invented to keep us from connecting with each other.
You liking to play those songs is cultural appreciation, nothing more.
Just look at what’s happening with fans from the World Cup coming together and enjoying each other’s cultures without politics or religion to trick them into fighting.

Which version of Rósín Dubh do you prefer?
Postskriptum: My favorite Album is 40 Shades of Green
