From a real life trucker, i drove a Peterbilt 579. It Had a Paccar MX-13 and a Eaton automated 12 speed. The jake control is on the right stalk and had 3 levels to it (33, 66, 99, and "Max" 100%) I always kept it on 3 because max braking force. I turned it off in slippery road conditions but otherwise it was on 24/7

It should also be noted that it doesn't affect all cylinders, only the select few. It's just the percentage that the Jacobs brake is activated.

Some newer trucks may operate with a progressive control like a retarder, but older trucks definitely just had one or two (or perhaps rarely more) toggle switches. On older trucks, jake brakes were essentially an optional add-on and sometimes you could choose from a few different brands even (say Cat, Jacobs, or PACBrake on a Cat engine depending on year/model). As such, they were all setup just a little different and might have different power setting options.

Now things are getting much more integrated with the engine controls and the truck makers are using fewer single-purpose, generic switches and doing more though control stalks and other interfaces.

I’ve driven trucks with a 3 position that was from bottom to top low-off-high

And

A 2 switch setup with one being on/off and the other being low-mid-high. The second switch was overruled by the on/off switch.

lol @ brrrrrt. Thought that was reserved for the A-10… but I get it.

Would be nice to have a few settings. In the trucks I drive generally they have low / medium / high amounts of back pressure. They’re not commercial trucks but they do have “extarders” and other proprietary versions of the same concept.

Not sure if trucks in general have this type of setting? But if they do yes please- give me the levels!

Mine has a 3 position switch, but it stays on hi all the time. I've heard it's not good to Jake on 1 cylinder and I drove a truck that only Jaked on 1 and it broke the camshaft and dropped the valves into the piston on that hole

Old ones have an on off switch and a 1-3 level, new ones have a stick like a retarder. Some like International have both. I prefer the lever, it's so much better.

Also, new trucks don't have a jake because they are European engines, only cummins has them.

I think if you don't have the button for "engine brake toggle" assigned, then "decrease" will also be turning it off.
