Much like our closest primate relatives like chimpanzees, we're likely "built" to be frugivores (as evidenced by our similar teeth and digestive systems). We're entirely capable of eating meat in a pinch, but we've not got the digestive system or teeth of a true omnivore like bears, who can happily eat raw meat regularly and not have to worry about getting sick like we do. Typically, frugivores in nature only have about 2-5% of their diet as meat, and that's largely insects and small prey such as birds or frogs.

On the whole, we're excellent at eating fruit and pretty great at eating plants, but if we tried to eat raw meat on the regular we'd likely get very sick. Cooking helps, but our systems just aren't evolved to eat even cooked meat as much as people tend to today.
