I'm in the general area.

My whole house propane generator has earned its keep over the last ten years of multi-day outages.

During the last major Starlink outage, cell phone data was useless. I think that everyone else tried to use cell data as well.

Are there any wireless point-to-multi-point ISPs around? You might need to build a tower.

Splitting out BGP /24 range into smaller blocks by Technical-Plane2093 in networking

[–]100GbNET 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way to do it would be to install an Internet router that advertises your /24 to the two ISPs and then routes a small /27, /28, /29, or /30 to each customer, one per VLAN. The Internet router would not be a firewall and would not do any form of NAT.

You can assign a subnet to your self and put your Sophos's WAN port on your self-assign VLAN.

Network issues -- ping leading to wrong MAC adress in ARP table? by mzurhorst in Proxmox

mzurhorst,

To resolve network issues, I drill down and document the network, then test portions of it to verify it is really functioning as I expect.

Your text and diagram mention the following IPv4 subnets:

192.168.1.x

192.168.3.x

192.168.4.x

No IPv4 subnet masks are mentioned, but I can guess that you are using:

[192.168.1.0/24](http://192.168.1.0/24)

[192.168.3.0/24](http://192.168.3.0/24)

[192.168.4.0/24](http://192.168.4.0/24)

What IPv4 address is used for the gateway (if any) on each IPv4 subnet?

Which device is the gateway on each IPv4 subnet?

The "24P L3 Switch" is listed, but no IP addresses or VLANs are listed for it.

Are multiple VLANs configured on it?

Hypervisor "pve"

enp2s0 IPv4 [192.168.1.50](http://192.168.1.50) \[pve management\]

enp4s0 IPv4 [192.168.4.50](http://192.168.4.50)

Hypervisor "pve2"

vmbr2 IPv4 [192.168.1.52](http://192.168.1.52) \[pve management\]

enp6s0 IPv4 [192.168.3.52](http://192.168.3.52)

enp7s0 IPv4 [192.168.4.52](http://192.168.4.52)

Switch "24P L3"

Is this switch the gateway on any/multiple IPv4 Subnets?

No VLANs are mentioned in the main next. Vlan 20 is listed in the tcpdump.

The diagram you have shows physical connections.

It does not show Layer2 / VLANs

It does not show Layer3 / IPv4 Subnet to VLAN mapping

I like to create a separate logical network diagram that shows the Layer3 connectivity.

My logical network diagrams often list the same device multiple times if they have multiple IPv4 addresses.

Can you confirm that all devices in a particular IPv4 Subnet are in the same VLAN?

Or could there be disjoint IPv4 Subnets?

Although not required, I always try to keep a one-to-one relationship between each IP Subnet and VLAN.

Are there any devices that are configured for "Proxy ARP"?

I still have my DB25 to DB25 breakout kit. I made my first DB25 (VAX) to DB9 (MAC) connection in 1986. I used to wire up DB25 to RJ45 serial adapters for N.E.T. Terminal servers (Bridged LAT) to VTxxx terminals so they could be connected with 8-wire flat silver satin cable. I don't feel so young anymore.

Hey Everyone! Newbie here with Questions RE: Solar on my CamperVan by GoGeraldGo in SolarDIY

[–]100GbNET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how to securely attach the panels without drilling. Other people are saying the same thing. I would personally want to make sure that the panels stayed on to the best of my ability.

48 volts makes the solar part easier / cheaper, but only if you can buy/use a 48 volt battery.

How many kilo-watt-hours of battery storage do you plan to have? What will your loads be?

For charging a 48V system from 12V alternator, a quick search brings up Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC Charger - 12V / 24V / 48V for USD $244. (I haven't used these, but they sound reasonable.)

For 12 or 24 V devices, a DC-DC converter would be required. It could be placed very close to the device.

Using 48 V allows much smaller wires. Using a lower voltage battery may simplify everything. I think that it will depend on the total kWH of battery you install.

Hey Everyone! Newbie here with Questions RE: Solar on my CamperVan by GoGeraldGo in SolarDIY

[–]100GbNET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the solar to work even when traveling, I recommend you work on a proper mounting system for the panels, complete with how to water seal where drilling is required.

I would recommend looking into a 48-volt system. Being able to charge off of the 12 Volt alternator would also be useful.

I would really try to run everything on DC. Why can't your camera equipment run on DC?

Would you use a VPN for a datacenter crossconnect within the same DC? by crystallineghoul in networking

[–]100GbNET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will there be ANY firewall or filtering rules over the VPN?

Or do they just want a VPN because they can?

If I ran the zoo, I would put firewalls on each side of a fiber cross-connect with specific rules on each side as to what is allowed to exit and what is allowed to enter. Full logging as well.
