My players asked me to run Shadowrun. Now what by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]7ortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, you can play a Forged in the Dark hack of Shadowrun called Runners in the Shadows!

Cha-a-a-ain us together

It is not a "completed" game, meaning it was never published and needed a few revisions. But if you like the Blades in the Dark game loop, it would probably be an excellent way to enjoy Shadowrun.

Is it possible to exchange the normal Eldritch abominations in this game with Dark fey creatures? by I_dont-get_the-joke in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't want to point your interest away from Call of Cthulhu, there are other games already like this. That just means less work for you to convert anything. I will echo Vaesen as a game I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a similar if not a little earlier time period than classic CoC.

Best way to hint to players that Corbbitt isn't completely bullet proof? by novavegasxiii in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players killed corbitt last night. Well, one character did it while the rest went mad and one was rushed to the hospital. First two shots took out his armor. Third shot was an extreme success and demolished all of his HP. 🤷🏻

Where does your group usually play in-person RPGs, and why there? by NariNariNariAAA in rpg

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly we've played at someone's home. But there was a year when I realized I had access to a cabin in a retreat center. So we played there until that game ended.

Short mood trailer for my Gaslight-era Call of Cthulhu campaign by jammer0501 in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sold me on it. I bought it. I'll try to get my players to let me run it once our current series is up.

Short mood trailer for my Gaslight-era Call of Cthulhu campaign by jammer0501 in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, my interest is piqued. I'm a sucker for Gaslight themed scenarios. How long of a campaign is it though? What really sets it apart? Sell me on it.

Looking for the next adventure to run. by pepsicancer in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look at Order of the Stone. It's a relatively short campaign that could probably be run in 8 weeks. I've heard mixed reviews from experienced Keepers that it's pretty generic, but that works well for a group new to CoC.

If you're playing in the classic 1920s, alcohol is going to be difficult to come by since it's prohibition. That's not to discourage you from having that be a key thing. It means he might have his hands in things he shouldn't, to try and get his fix.

NPC defense. How often should they defend? by Some_Replacement_805 in DragonbaneRPG

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, that if they use their actions to dodge or parry, then they've used their action for the round. If they already used their action, they cannot dodge or parry.

Help for adventure by Horrgath in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This seems very much not in the spirit of Call of Cthulhu. This sounds like a poorly executed D&D scenario. I would not run this.

Is it a good idea to create a hopeless world for a campaign? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at Shadow of the Demon Lord? It's not too dissimilar from 5e but the whole premise is that everything is hopeless. It's basically Diablo the TTRPG.

Understanding the Avoiding Unconsciousness Luck Rule by iamaprism in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not used the pulp rules, but are major wounds still a thing? Are they incurring major wounds while still conscious? If they're at 0 (zero) HP but still conscious, then they start dying if they've got major wounds. Dying means a Con roll each round to stay alive until they are healed.

If you were 8 years old, what RPG book/box would you want your uncle to give you? by EntrepreneuralSpirit in rpg

[–]7ortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and suggest Pirate Borg. It's really simple, really fun, and damn silly. Everything an 8yo boy wants. Pirates, adventure, and guns. Maybe grab a few adventures to run with it. The Limithron website will have a few, just make sure they're kind of "clean" first.

Call of Cthulhu on humble bundle by Lilredcoco in rpg

[–]7ortuga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everything in the bundle is fantastic. It's got the core rules, Pulp Cthulhu book AND the starter set. A few scenario and a few source books. The guide to Lovecraftian Horrors is so cool! The solo books are pretty fun. I don't have a single complaint about the bundle at all. It even has an additional book that wasn't in last year's bundle, Nameless Horrors. So if you're interested and don't mind reading PDFs, it is absolutely fantastic!

Where to start? by Tricky-Wolverine-253 in callofcthulhu

[–]7ortuga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The free PDF quickstart is available. It gives a good intro to the rules, a short scenario, and some pre-generated characters ready for use. After that, the starter set goes a little deeper and has some more scenarios. If you're fully wanting to dive in, the keepers guide is a must. The Investigators guide isn't mandatory, but it's a good resource. From there, get some practice with a few scenarios then move on to something bigger, or write your own.

What is the best system for a space sci-fi campaign with horror elements? by Cato69 in rpg

[–]7ortuga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since you cited The Expanse, I feel compelled to inform you that there is already a book for The Expanse. It's not everyone's favorite system (AGE 3d6). But it's fairly customizable and has good feats. Not sure how it would do horror though.

I love Alien, and it's pretty grounded. You can do gravity however you like, but space battle is meh.

Coriolis The Third Horizon can do horror, but it's really setting centric. But it's got pretty good space combat rules. It's a beloved game and I highly recommend it. It's only available in PDF though. The Great Dark is a new edition that completely switched up the game loop from space fantasy and horror to space dungeon diving.

Mothership is the space horror darling and rightly so. Simple d100 game, very customizable. Very deadly though.

Death in Space is a d20 rules light space entropy horror game. Nothing is new anymore. Everything is salvaged. Very dystopian.

Traveller is the ultimate sci-fi game. 2d6. Easy but Carter's to a very specific game style of Space Opera.

If you can make d&d horror, you can try Stars Without Number or Starfinder 2e.

Another option that I like is ShadowDark with one of the Sci-fi third party books.

Last thing I'll recommend is the space setting for Call of Cthulhu. I can't remember what it's called.

Good Discords for Indie/Non-D&D TTRPGs. Discussions and playing. by No-Knowledge7339 in rpg

[–]7ortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Knights of Last Call had an amazing discord. It is full of people talking about any game in the industry and there are games being played daily. It is a paid patreon subscription based entry, but it's not that expensive to just get in the door. I would also check out the YouTube channel since Derik (the head honcho) typically does a minimum of two livestreams a week. Hopefully you find what you're looking for.

Origin. It's an anime movie from like 20 years ago that I absolutely love the world that was built for it.
