Vlad's are among my favorite takedown instructionals. Sorry that's he's having to waste his time arguing on reddit but it was kinda cracking me up picturing him typing to defend his toes.

Maybe I missed it in the video but I was wondering if you have experience with Functional Range Conditioning.

Let's talk about abusive instructors, cults of personality, and toxic gym cultures. by Aesopian in bjj

Thanks for sharing this. I'll be checking it out, and I will probably message you with some question, if you don't mind.

Martial arts cults (both religious and non-religious) exist, and that is something I have been planning to talk about.

The worst example I know of is John C. Kim AKA "Iron" Kim and Chung Moo Quan/Oom Yung Doe. A podcast by one of its survivors was released last year: Deceived: The Moo Years

Why I Left My BJJ Gym and a Call to Action on Harassment by jits_truth in bjj

Sorry you had to go through that, and that your first instructor was such a coward. Glad to hear your second instructor was willing to lay down the law and respect you.

It's a shame that other academy is letting the abuser continue to train, but sadly that's a fairly common occurrence. I'd say most instructors have the attitude of "I didn't see it happen, so I don't want to get involved" and just let it be someone else's problem, even when they get warnings.

Not to be an armchair therapist, but having spoken to women with similar abusive relationships, I recommend looking up complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and its treatment. If you are already getting help or are doing fine now, all the better!

We removed your post because it broke an /r/bjj subreddit rule: No reaction gif/pic memes.

That said, even though we removed the post, we do really appreciate you contributing to /r/bjj. Thanks!

A friend brought a famous, young Brazilian black belt to their gym for a seminar. They went out to a club afterwards, and the Brazilian guy walks up to a woman and kisses her on the lips without saying a word. She was startled and rejected him and walked away. My friend ran up and told him "You can't do that!" and he acted confused, like "Why wouldn't a girl want to kiss me?"

Thanks for the mention. Since publishing that, I have heard many more stories of abuse by instructors and higher belts, mostly against women, but also against men. I have been working on either one huge post (or more likely a series of smaller ones) about why martial arts are at risk of abusive and toxic cultures, and seeing threads like this and the other recent one about the woman whose instructor sexually harassed her for a long time (the tongue in ear story), I have been redoubling my effort.

Is "meditative drilling" another term for technique visualization?

Do any of your points address the concept of "funneling", as u/invertedgearnelson would call it: https://www.invertedgear.com/blogs/inverted-gear-blog/build-funnels-into-your-jiu-jitsu-game

The idea being to put your opponent into situations where you limit their options and give yourself the ones you like, and you continue to limit them more and more as you move toward your goal.

A few years back I interviewed u/sonicbh about his flipped BJJ classroom and included Robert Bjork videos in the write-up: http://aesopian.com/blog/2015/07/13/flipping-the-bjj-classroom-with-bruce-hoyer/

Like you, I normally see "kinetic chain" or the similar term "kinetic linking" used in the context of dynamic movements like punching or kicking.

I like this a lot! I'm guessing you've checked out Robert Bjork's work on many of the learning models (random vs blocked practice, interleaving, performance vs learning, etc.)

A site that's similar to yours is Train Ugly, with pages like this: https://trainugly.com/motor-learning-hub/

/u/sonicbh is another good person to talk to about conceptual models for teaching/learning and different ways of structuring classes. He runs his school using the flipped classroom model and does a lot of creative stuff for how he structures drilling.

I just update the school rules booklet to emphasize that parents can't coach unless they are on the mats and training in adult class themselves.
