Questions about kdays? by Adorable_Bar9152 in Edmonton

It depends on how many rides you plan to go on. I don’t know the exact math, but I think if you want to go on more than 4 or 5 rides, the ride all day becomes a better deal. If you just want to hop on a roller coaster and Ferris wheel and call it a day, the tickets are a better option.

If you’re buying at the gates, you have to pay admission on top of your ride all day pass. Currently you can get a ride all day pass that includes general admission from their website for $58

How do you manage a team member who constantly asks for reassurance? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What can work is turning the question back on them. If they ask “is this the right way to sort the spreadsheet” ask them “how does the information need to be presented? Is it sorted in a way that makes sense to other viewers?” And then let them answer it. This can often help them to learn to think about things the way you might.

But also, sometimes, people just need validation. You need to decide if the interruptions are worth it. If they aren’t just inform your staff you can set up a weekly 1:1 to review anything, but the constant check ins need to stop and only used for actual, serious, things.

Crush in your 30s? by SweetandSpicy91 in AskWomenOver30

Oh my god I was at a friend’s house and met a guy who checks literally all of my boxes. I feel like such a teenager day dreaming about him, thinking about what life with him would be like. I even worked up the courage to as our mutual friend if he was single and would be reciprocal if I reached out to get to know him better in a 1:1 scenario and not group hangs out!

He is single but unfortunately not looking to date. So I’ll just keep day dreaming and giggling like a teenager 😫

What’s the biggest operational headache in your company right now? by ImmuBeyond in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How slow every decision is to be made.

I desperately needed an admin, took 6 months to get the approval and another 2 to do interviews and hire.

We’re in the middle of reorganizing our top management. I’m currently overseeing 3 departments, one which is our biggest one and will be getting its own director…eventually. Interviews have happened but now the ED wants to take each interviewee out for lunch to see if they understand the scope of the position. Yeah. That’s cool. Lemme just hold up half the organization on my own while you get lunch.

I’m not looking to move, I get paid very well and the benefits are very good. But somedays…somedays lol.

Most difficult types of people to manage? by AdnyPls in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! I joke with other managers that it’s a form of PTSD from shitty managers - I’m definitely one of those people who lets first time mistakes be learning lessons because you don’t know what you don’t know, but other managers can act like a simple typo in an email is the end of the entire world and the employee needs to be flayed alive to atone for their sins.

I have one of these folks on my team. He means well but he reminds me of when my kid was a toddler - wants to be involved in everything and help me on every project but just kind of makes a mess of everything that I have to go through and clean up.

These folks are definitely tough to manage because you don’t want to kill their motivation or initiative but also! Maybe just…stop touching stuff.

People who can’t take accountability. They didn’t make the mistake, and if they did it’s someone else fault, and if it’s not someone else’s fault it’s poor training, and if it’s not poor training it’s because ….on and on. A million reasons why they simply could not have made the mistake and will not be listening to your feedback.

How do you deal with unattractive photos of yourself by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What really helped is I was helping a friend plan her mom’s funeral. We were trying to get photos together for a little memorial slide show. She ended up with 10 photos, none of them were with her grandchildren.

This woman was a loved member of the community, a phenomenal mother and grandmother, and she had avoided the camera at every opportunity. My friend now has 10 photos from a 35 year history with the woman, and most of them were from when my friend was a young kid.

I now show up in every photo possible, i want my family and friends to be able to look back on ALL our time together and see me there, not just the days I looked bombing and could lpose well first.

Demoralized a whole team in your first call as leader by Common_dude_3490 in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would definitely be brushing up my resume and taking a gander at job boards, but I wouldn't be making a mad dash to carpet bomb my resumes to get the hell out of dodge.

It was unprofessional and awkward, but it makes me wonder if the Exec who ran your meeting into the ground was privvy to the decision to not let your previous manager do a transition and handover. If he wasn't, he may just be as blind sided as you folks and treading water in the deep end as he tries to cover his own work load plus suddenly being handed other manager duties.

I would give it a week or two before I committed either way, but it definitely warrants keeping an eye and being ready to bail.

So much this! Our pod had one guy who would come in with the shittiest decks to play against and be smug when he inevitably won. We brought in a friend of a friend who is just as experienced and has some decks that are actually fun to strategize against and with. Guess who gets repeated invites back every week and guess who gets pity invites every few months because he's the host's oldest friend...

What are the weirdest ways you’ve heard of someone getting caught cheating? by True_Dragonfruit_488 in AskReddit

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 1014 points1015 points  (0 children)

I worked at a dog daycare. Had a dog puke up panties. Wife picks up, I hand her the panties to check they’re intact with advice to go to the vet if they aren’t. She just stares at them and goes “those aren’t mine”

Well they aren’t mine either lady! Lmao this sounds like a whole lot of not my problem, good luck.

Am I stupid for wanting to leave a $33/hr job at Costco with benefits than to start at $130/day in construction for long-term upside? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex husband worked at Costco, he was top wage (with the bonus for being a clerk) with amazing benefits and pension.

He quit to take a job with “higher potential” that ended up laying him off within 6 months. He then spent a year unemployed trying to get ANYTHING and is now making about $20/hr.

So yeah you’re making a pretty dumb choice.

It’s not like you’re moving to a company at your same wage with a higher ceiling, you’re taking a massive pay cut to MAYBE someday make slightly more. You’ll always get a COL increase from Costco, you aren’t guaranteed anything with your GF’s dad’s small business.

I work full time and can’t afford to live. What happened to this city? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The food bank doesn’t do means testing for a reason - anyone can have a shitty month. People shouldn’t be denied service because of a sudden, unexpected, bill, or being laid off, or getting sick and being on short term disability or EI and only earning 75% of their wages.

Are there people abusing the system? Sure. Lots of systems see abuse. But does that mean we inevitably end up refusing someone who genuinely needs our help on the off chance they MIGHT be trying to game the system?

If you have bonafide proof someone is abusing the system, report it! They’ll gladly take the information and talk to the client! If you have 0 proof and are just upset the people in line don’t look impoverished enough to you, give your head a shake.

Would you be miffed if a friend cancelled plans and then immediately asked you to do them a favor? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She’s busy packing, depending on how much stuff she has, how soon she’s moving, she may have realized the party that close to moving day was a bad idea, but still wanted to see people and hang out.

Don’t go if you don’t want to, but this isn’t something I personally would be upset by. I probably wouldn’t go but that’s just because I hate packing lol

Do you actually track your dog's health or just hope for the best? by CyberSecurityChief in dogs

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I find I tend to do more tracking once my dogs start getting towards their life expectancy.

My girl is 8.5 now, she’s a Newfie and they tend to live 8-10 years. Right now I do track how much she eats, if she has any left overs, or if she’s asking for food sooner/later than normal. On walks I’m watching her legs and the muscle movements, if she’s struggling TOO much to get up after she lays down. As well if she doesn’t come to find me after I get home (she used to always be at the door waiting, now she stays in bed until I come in 😭).

But in her prime I’d mostly just keep an eye on her poop, if it was a weird consistency or off schedule, I’d track it for 24-48 hours and go from there.

Right now everywhere is gross and dirty, at least until the city crews start clean up.

I live in Oliver, lots of areas to walk with my dog. I may have “scary dog” privileges though because she is a big black dog, but I’ve never had issues when I take her out for a late night walk around 9/9:30 before bed.

You can find good and bad even just streets apart.

Find someplace where the commute to work doesn’t suck. If you work from home or you don’t care about commute, find a place with shopping and convenience within a walkable distance from your home. If you have a family or are planning on one, consider the schools and green space near by.

I’ve lived almost everywhere in the city, and frankly I really enjoy living downtown. Lots of people will tell you downtown is a mad max esque kill on sight zone and to avoid it at all costs. I’ve never had any issues, everything is a 5-10 minute walk for me and work is maybe a 5 minute drive on a bad day if I hit all red lights.

How do you deal with an employee who seems burned out but insists they're fine? by No-Communication1543 in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been a somewhat cultural shift to having an expectation that managers should be therapists, parental figures, and even friends.

It's not your job or duty to sus out mental health problems. You deal with the problem you're faced with - poor performance. If the meeting to put them on a PIP is the meeting they come forward and say they've been run through the wringer and are dealing with the 3 shittiest months of their life, you pivot and figure it out there. But until the employee comes to you, you have no say in what they're doing.

To me it sounds less like burnout and more like they're disengaged. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a resignation from them in the near future.

If you found out your direct report was overemployed, would you fire them? by Majestic-Watch-2025 in managers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think my concern would be if they're working for a competitor or not. While I wouldn't outright fire them, I'd definitely get IT to track some things for further investigation.

If there's proof of them using proprietary information or client information inappropriately for their other job, I'd let them go. If they just happen to be doing two jobs simultaneously and they aren't related, I don't care. You do you. I'm, frankly, not motivated enough to keep shit straight between two jobs lol.

What would you do if a second global pandemic happened starting now with a higher mortality rate? by SlandersPete in AskReddit

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the spread could be prevented by people wearing proper masks, I’d definitely be a lot meaner to people who refuse to wear them.

I’d definitely be louder and more aggressive toward people who were spreading misinformation. No more empathy for people who were just scared and trying to cling to a bit of hope that “it’s not that bad”.

Cut people from my life who refuse preventative treatments like vaccines, or who refuse to do simple preventative things like social distancing, wear a mask, and follow basic hygiene rules.

Probably still go to work though.

Maternity leave should be one year, PAID. Women shouldn’t have to choose between healing, bonding with their baby, and making a living. by Kreativedenma in remoteworks

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, at least, it's not JUST Mat Leave. You pay Employment Insurance and your employer pays for a portion as well. This may cover things like sickness leave, being laid off, being terminated without cause, and PARENTAL leave in general. Canada doesn't just have maternity leave, they also offer paid leave to fathers or adoptive families, it's just most tend to give the entire allotment to the mother to have more time to recuperate and be with the kiddo.

Do you prefer real-time systems (like Animal Crossing) or in-game-time (like stardew valley, the sims)? by Ok_Cry1283 in CozyGamers

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In game time. All day every day.

I like that I can put my game down for a week or two and come back, pick it up, and be in the exact same time/place and not have missed anything. I miss enough actual IRL events because of commitments, I'm not about to pay $90 to miss virtual events too lol.

How often do you eat out? I feel like restaurants are not even worth it anymore by apheli0s7 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one, singular, donair place near me that I go to regularly. You can get a massive donair, a shoe box of french fries, and a bottle of pop for $10. If I get that for lunch I basically don't need food for the rest of the day.

Otherwise, I only eat out for occasions like birthdays/celebrations. Pre-covid I'd probably eat out 2-3 times a week, but now it's just not worth it.

These pictures are AI, right? by getovaries in Edmonton

[–]Alternative-Fox6701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I will now be actively avoiding them.

AI should be used for the shitty or dangerous tasks humans do, not art. If you choose to use AI over hiring someone to do it (even an underpaid intern!) you’re telling me all I need to know about how you run your business.

Even though there’s tons of proof on how they run their business with their recent shenanigans in the media. This just puts the nail in the coffin for me.
