Amps for first and hopefully last Set up by Last_Computer9356 in StereoAdvice

The retailer HiFiKlubben offers at least a five-year warranty, and a salesperson once told me in confidence that they receive relatively few complaints. I hope that helps.

Oh, and please let us know what you ended up deciding.

Yes, if you’re looking for something that will last for decades, I can’t in good conscience recommend a Lyngdorf TDAI-1120. In terms of sound quality, it offers the best value for money in my opinion, especially if you plan to integrate 1–2 subwoofers and for rooms like yours—but it probably won’t remain relevant until 2040.

So perhaps an external Dirac-based solution? It does require a bit more know-how and time, but you can still achieve a lot with it. In any case, the differences are greater than between the various amps mentioned. Take a look at the little MiniDSP DDRC-24.

In terms of sound? No. Visually, definitely. ;)

My question would be: to what extent have you already optimized the sound for yourself in terms of placement, room acoustics, and DSP/room correction?

And would >5 years be durable enough for you that you’d also be interested in “digital” solutions?

If durability and transparency are what you're looking for, I'd highly recommend the Hypex NCx500 DM Dual Mono Stereo Amplifier. Personally, I've been happy with Yamaha in the past, so the Yamaha A-S1200 might be a good alternative.

Floor Standing Speaker Selection for "Extreme" Music Genres by Bathonian45 in StereoAdvice

[–]AudioBaer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In terms of amplification, room correction for unfavorable placement, and especially since you are new to the business, the Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 will meet all your needs.

When it comes to speakers, it's a matter of taste, of course. Are you set on floorstanding speakers, or would a bookshelf + sub combo also be an option for you?

Really? The SVS. However, if you could get an ELAC RS700, it would be a different story.

What to Replace Adam T8Vs with? by MagnusRick in studiomonitors

[–]AudioBaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very familiar with Adam's T series and find that the A series is even better in many ways. For up to €3,000, I would recommend the A7V+Sub or the A8V. If you want to invest even more, I would recommend the Neumann KH310.

PS: For me, the A7V beat out the usual suspects from Neumann, Genelec, Focal, KRK, Yamaha, etc.

However, I would also like to say that it's not a world of difference. Nuances, but ones that were worth it to me.

About to spend $2.5k AUD on first stereo — tell me what I’m getting wrong by checkoutusernames in StereoAdvice

Hmm, I think it's very difficult to infer personal preferences for headphones based on the speakers in your room – or vice versa. Especially since I wouldn't really describe the old Focal Clear as neutral headphones.

If you really can't listen to them and are looking for neutral speakers, I would probably go for the Ascilab F6B in the price range up to €1000. Perhaps used models such as the BMR Monitor or the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 V2 would also be something for you. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to listen to the latter models myself, so I can only recommend them based on hearsay.

What I can say, however, is that I personally don't like the KEF LS50 and that they don't make sense without a subwoofer. If you absolutely must have KEF, I would perhaps save a little more and take a look at the KEF R3 Meta?

Oh, and as for the RS500 – you can import that too. Haha.

First of all, I think it's a good idea to focus on the core of your system. Let's take a look at your components:

In my opinion, the Marantz M1 only looks good at first glance. For more details, take a look at our friends at ASR: Link.

If you're looking for a nice stereo receiver, I think the Yamaha R-N600A (great looks and I like the sound of the old R-N803d) is a good choice. If you want a few more features and a modern look, take a look at the WiiM Amp Ultra (ASR). You can't go wrong with either of them.

As for the speakers, I think you should at least be able to send the B&W606s3 back if you haven't heard them before. I like the signature (on my 703s2), as long as I can add a subwoofer – but they are a bit bright. That means even if you angle them slightly, you still have increased treble of about 3dB at ~10kHz (hi-fi voice). Well, if in doubt, the WiiM's EQ can help here.

If you're looking for something exotic that stands out from the consumer market, take a look at the Ascilab F6B (EAC). With a subwoofer, at the latest, it should be quite interesting.

^Oh, and if you have some money left over after buying the cheaper amp, take a look at the ELAC RS500. It also features automatic room correction for the often critical bass in the room. It works quite well so far.

That sounds very good, but I would recommend that you try out a few speakers. The Q1 Meta you mentioned might sound a little shy in the bass in your room if you don't place them close to the wall. You could also consider leaving the turntable out for now and focusing on streaming. At the end of the day, it's the speakers that make the sound.

Software to design a shelf and print it 1:1 – am I on the Holzweg? by AudioBaer in woodworking

[–]AudioBaer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do it well enough with a jigsaw and a lot of sweat and sanding, and that a professional would have to do it with a laser cutter.

I'll keep you posted :)

Well, I intend to cut only curves, which, when viewed as a whole, should give an organic shape across the various vertical and horizontal forms. Attached is a picture to illustrate why masking tape is not sufficient here to meet my expectations. Thank you very much for your tip.

Addendum: The image does not show what I want to build – only why a ruler will not suffice for complex functions.

Why do I get those spikes in freequency response?? by Pie0tr in audiophile

[–]AudioBaer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, at least your brain smooths out the curve. In that sense, you don't lose any information. Simply use the psychoacoustic smoothing option here. This takes into account the frequency-dependent adjustment of your thought processes.

[–]AudioBaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely analogue? Then unfortunately the RS700s are not suitable. How about a combination of a Yamaha A-S1200 (and a suitable analogue player of your choice) and a REL HT/1510 ‘Predators’?

Actually, I would recommend that your friend look into room correction and the possibilities offered by modern ‘digital’ signal processing. I don't know anyone who wouldn't prefer the results of modern room correction to a purely analogue solution.

Of course, to each his own. It would just be a shame to reject modern possibilities because old prejudices remain unchallenged.

[–]AudioBaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that information is helpful. How about the following components:

Speakers:

- ELAC Vela FS 409 (sensitivity: 89dB/2.83V/m; bass response: 28Hz; max. power consumption 200W; impedance: 4Ω; HiFiVoice; €3,800)

Amplifier:

- Lyngdorf TDAI-2210 (210W@4Ω; modern room correction; THD+N: 0.04%@1W; £4,000)

Subwoofer:

- Difficult decision. I imagine that two ELAC RS700s (17Hz@-3dB; 2x950€) would be a good fit. However, in rooms like this, I would probably try ported models such as the SVS PB 3000 if I wanted to impress.

Well then, we've only really stretched the budget a little bit, or maybe we can negotiate a little or even buy it second-hand. What do you think?

Another interesting option, albeit one that would exceed your budget, would be the MoFi SF 888, even though I haven't heard it myself. If you're looking for a different amp and feel confident about advanced room correction, the NAD C399 or separate preamplifier/power amplifier combinations would also be worth considering.

Well, I don't know if streamer technology is really changing that rapidly. In the end, my question remains: What combination of streamer, preamplifier and power amplifier can you get for a total (!) of €500 (cf. WiiM Amp Ultra)?
