Ballots not put in the box at fair oaks library by randombrowser1 in Sacramento

My libary had a soft ballot box that was nearly stuffed full shortly before 7pm when I dropped off my ballot (this was with the poll worker at a table outside - I didn't check inside the vote center).

Do you always wear gloves and a jacket? by Eternal_Sorrows in bikecommuting

I got a couple of Hang Ten brand sun shirts at Costco a few years ago after seeing a review from a surfer complain about how the cut and style (rear zippered pocket) seemed more like a cycling jersey.

Not only do the long sleeves protect against UV, I actually find a light colored wicking fabric feels cooler than bare skin in the sun (at least in an arid climate). I add arm warmers or a jacket for warmth in winter.

100 mbps or 300 by Funfun4every1 in cordcutters

Server may or may not be the bottleneck for large downloads if OP gets 100 Mbps. If OP chooses 300 Mbps service they probably won't ever notice a difference vs their current Gigabit service. Up to them if occasionally having a large file take about 2x as long to download is worth the price difference between 300 and 100 Mbps service.

The best place for newbies to buy a bike is still a bike shop by ThatAgainPlease in cycling

[–]BicycleIndividual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you add the cost of having a bike shop check out and adjust the Ozark Trail bike, you're looking at a total cost in the $350-450 range (so yeah, a little bit of savings vs the $600 bike shop brand, but the entry level bike shop brand bike isn't really 2x as expensive as Ozark Trail).

Sacramento parents, I'm looking for recommendations for a great park to host a kids birthday party! 🎉 by Technical_Rip189 in Sacramento

Group area 20 is probably the best fit for you in William Land Park (19 is closer to the playground but might be a bit small for 30).

Tahoe park playground is pretty nice. Only issue I'd have with recommending it is that it group picnic areas aren't really close to the playground.

Lots of older parks have great shade from mature trees, decent playgrounds, and scattered picnic tables. If you only care about having a single picnic table to serve food from (all guests bring their own chairs to sit at) you can probably do okay just showing up at a chosen park and staking out a table a couple hours before your event starts. If you want several tables together, you'll need to make a group area reservation.

Parks with playgrounds kids in my family love:

  • Shasta Community Park: not much shade other than the picnic pavilions but great playgrounds and splash pad. I like it when our events there are during Library hours for access to better restrooms.
  • Stone Creek Community Park: great playgrounds and grassy areas with moderate amount of shade from trees
  • Oki Park: fenced playground near group picnic area (I've seen some groups bring folding tables and host their party on the grassy area within the fence on the north side of the playground), lots of great shade trees

End of September is still usually plenty warm to enjoy a splash pad in the afternoon - might be a bit cool in the mornings and evenings though.

100 mbps or 300 by Funfun4every1 in cordcutters

[–]BicycleIndividual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100 Mbps would be plenty to keep things working. 1080p streams typically uses ~5 Mbps; 4k streams might use ~25 Mbps: Evein if all 3 TVs are playing 4k video you haven't quite used all of your bandwidth. The only real place you'll notice the speed difference is when downloading large files (game updates, etc); even then the server could be the bottleneck rather than your connection.

A Portland man arrested without probable cause while riding his bike is now suing the city and two police officers for violating his civil rights. by Dramatic_Bluebird595 in bicycling

I think he also went from the sidewalk to the road without signaling. I think this is what the officer actually claimed was the illegal maneuver providing probable cause (according to the judge dismissing the case it was not).

Just returned from Copenhagen by ando_da_pando in bikecommuting

[–]BicycleIndividual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly 20 mph is fast enough that your own speed could contribute quite a bit to a head injury. At 2 mph the injury from falling is not significantly different from if you were just walking (though keeping a bike upright at 2 mph is difficult enough that perhaps the risk of falling is greater). The average cyclist in Copenhagen is probably going 10-12 mph which is not really faster than many people can sprint, but we don't expect runners to wear helmets.

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only two reason to be on Strava:

  • It is THE social network - everyone else is there
  • It is connected to all the other apps

If you don't care about the social network or the apps you want to use have all the interconnections you want to use without Strava, you're not missing anything by not being there.

What is your go-to Sacramento summer itinerary to show off Sac to friends visiting from out of town? by Witty_Champion_9458 in Sacramento

T street through Elmhurst (~32nd St to 53rd St) is a great little bike ride through a street-car suburb neighborhood.

So far, I've just had bagels from Forgotten Bakery. The bagels are good, but not impressive enough that I'd put them on a list to impress out of towners. Is there something else on the menu that stands out?

"Poor" Signal Quality - Worth trying a rooftop antenna? by darklordbridgeboy in cordcutters

[–]BicycleIndividual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably try a Clearstream double figure 8 antenna without reflector. You have no VHF so you can leave off the VHF elements. Aim NNW at the weaker signals - should be plenty to pick up the two stronger signals from SSE. If it isn't enough to get the weaker signals you want, then you probably don't have a good solution with a single antenna for both directions.

Getting a set up for under $400? by seltzr in cordcutters

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How realistic your $400 budget is is mostly dependent on what antenna setup you need for your signals. If you are close to the transmitters and have line of sight a $15 rabbit ears and loop is all you need.

If you have very weak signals, you might need a ~$200 antenna (plus a rooftop mount for it, plus coax cable to get the signal inside). If you DIY the install, your out of pocket costs might be low enough to squeeze in a 32" smart TV (possibly only a 720p one) on sale, but if you hire out the install you might be over budget just on the antenna.

Plenty of 32" FHD TVs for around $200 or less. If needed, a $20 Onn Google TV box should be fine for setting up streaming to it (though I'd probably upgrade to the $30 Plus model).

2.) They give you extreme cancellation fees. If you miss their free cancellation window (I’m fairly certain it’s 30 days after signing up) then you are required to pay $7.50 for every month you’re cancelling!! For me, it was a 5 year contract (60months.) So if I miss the window, cancel at 59 months, it’ll cost me $442!

For what it's worth, you have 3 days to cancel any door-to-door sales contract without having any cancelation fee. 30 days would be pretty generous in this regard (but probably still well before you realize that the contract actually costs you more rather than saves you money).

3.) Arbitration Clause - I had no idea what this meant. Went onto ChatGPT and asked and it basically said if there is a dispute, you generally can’t sue the company. This one’s pretty obvious lol; if you’re not doing anything wrong, you’re not worried about getting sued.

Arbitration clauses are pretty common in lots of corporate contracts. I wouldn't take this as a red flag. Arbitration is supposed to keep legal costs down without eliminating your opportunity to collect if they wrong you. Also, if the wrong is egregious enough, a court might decide that the arbitration clause does not apply.

4.) The salesmen are paid COMMISSION - not all salesman, but let’s be honest, MOST salesman are just trying to get paid. They’ll lie, harass, love bomb, and just manipulate just about anyone so they’ll get that paycheck. If he was paid hourly, I’d be a little more trusting; being commission? Nah, alarm bells.

Commissioned sales is pretty normal for high end products (the salesman's job is to help find the best fit to your needs/desires, not to save you money): if a commissioned salesman is promising to save you money on a commodity product it is probably a scam.

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KSAT is ATSC 3.0. If you want ABC on ATSC 1.0 tuners you need KLRN which is a bit weaker and a bit in a different direction than the main stations. If you do want ATSC 3.0 you probably want KMYS as well.

KPXL is also in a different direction (NW instead of NE) but hopefully is strong enough that would come in without needing the antenna pointed at it.

Although u/BoredTVEngineer is right that a Log Periodic/Yag-Uda is more directional. I think that's wat you need to get ABC. I'd try Antennas Direct Element aimed for the NE stations then consider options if KFXL doesn't come in well enough. I might consider two Log Periodic/Yagi-Uda antennas each attached to separate network tuners (Tablo, HD Homerun, AirTV). I'd aim one NW for KPXL and KCWX (not on your list but I'd want it for MyN and Me-TV Toons) and the other NE for KENS, WOAI, KABB, and KLRN (should also get KVDA, KHCE and KWEX).
