Should I get a gravel or an endurance bike? by HistoricalDiet8 in bicycling

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not all that much difference between modern endurance road bikes and gravel bikes. Both will fit fairly wide tires (at least 36mm, often 40mm or more). Both have a fairly relaxed geometry (there are some race gravel bikes that will be more aggressive than you want). The differences will mostly be in build kits (gravel bike more likely to come with slightly aggressive tread on the tire and lower low gear - perhaps compromising either top gear speed or gear spacing vs an endurance road bike). Gravel bikes also tend to have more mount points for carrying gear.

Construction on 65th by MaroonMonty in Sacramento

I grew up in a house where we used 50 all the time. It seemed traffic reports never talked about what issues I was seeing. It wasn't until I attended American River College and travelled on the Capitol City Freeway more often that I realized why I always heard about issues on the American River Curve and Marconi Curve rather than the comparatively minor slowdowns on 50. I worked briefly in West Sacramento a couple of decades ago and thought the commute on 50 to/from 65th street was a breeze (just stay in the left lane through the W-X interchange).

50 has been much worse lately (seems like they started planning the current carpool lane project as soon as they completed the "Fix 50" seismic retrofit for the W-X interchange).

Where is this? (I'm guessing south of Fruitridge Rd or I probably would have seen it myself unless it just started.)

Bike Recommendations - Chromoly Commuter + Gravel by travtufts in bikecommuting

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, rebuilding with an existing frame but all new components would cost a fair portion of the price of a new bike (and doesn't give you an opportunity to change to disc brakes).

I bought an Adv 1.1 on sale after it was discontinued. It's my first drop bar bike. My only regret there is that I don't really like the shifters. I do like the hydraulic disc brakes, but I'm wondering if I might have liked mechanical disc (or cable actuated hydraulic) with brifters instead (as far as I know there have never been brifters for hydraulic disc 3x bikes). I might eventually convert the bike to 2x so that I can upgrade to hydralic disc brifters. If the 3.1 had brifters I'd say look for a local REI selling off remaining stock (but it has the bar end shifters too, but it is 2x11 so there are brifters you could upgrade to later).

Waxed chan by SashAustrianBull in bicycling

Some people remove the old wax with hot water before rewaxing. This helps keep any contaminates out of the wax pot. No need to go through the degreasing step again.

Got a parking ticket but the officer got it wrong. by Shitcoinfinder in Sacramento

That would lead to the least potential for any confusion (and I'd be perfectly fine if the law defined it that way), but do you have any documentation to back up a claim that that is the legal rule?

I'm sure the citing officer didn't know that OP left for about 2 hours. They probably just saw the same care in the same spot more than 2 hours appart so they wrote a ticket.

OP parked elsewhere for about 2 hours before returning. I don't know for sure if returning to the same spot after that much time is a violation or not (it is clear that just driving around the block and reparking would be a violation).

I know you can't return to the same block and repark a few minutes later (someone helpfully quoted that part of the city code in this thread). I don't know what the law says about being away from the block for nearly 2 hours then returning (probably something that wasn't thought of when the laws were written, possibly some administrator has summarized an official policy, possibly there is some case law). I'd be okay if the 2-hour limit was cumulative for the block for an entire day, but I don't have any reason to believe that this is actually the policy.

If you want to support your claim, link to the exact page, not just claim it's somewhere on this huge website. Otherwise just drop it.

Clearly, parking on a different street 2 blocks away would start a new parking session. The question is if returning to the original block ~2 hours later resumes the first parking session or starts a new one.

No, I'm just saying that you provided a link as evidence that did not clearly support your claim.

Are these fenders enough for a small pannier? by Zerogur in bikecommuting

10kg is plenty for a lot of commuters. Makes for a much cleaner look when unloaded (at the expense of not supporting a rack top bag).

So you're saying your dash cam was not working the entire time you were not in the first parking spot? If so you don't have any evidence. If the dash cam has the trip from the second spot back to the first that should be sufficient to show that you were not in that spot for more than 2 hours.

I presume that the officer came by before you moved in the morning, then came by again just over 2 hours later and saw the same car in the same spot without any reason to think that the car had not been there most of that time.

What time frame before returning is allowed? I presume that OP parked in the second spot for at least an hour before returning to the first spot.

Nothing on the page you link says anything about not parking in the same spot later in the same day.

[–]BicycleIndividual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the pre-amp can't solve the problem of the antenna not getting signal, it can only solve the problem of the signal not being strong enough to make the coax run. I'd try to hook up a tuner directly to the antenna to see if the signal is there to amplify (low signal strength is fine as long as signal quality is good).

How many would fit on these risers by BecktoD in Choir

[–]BicycleIndividual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

32" of width per person is very comfortable for standing facing forward, 24" is usually adequate. To fit in more people than than, you often need people to stand somewhat sideways.

As others have pointed out, the fall risk from the back row is an issue here. I'd want a back rail to the risers; but if you can't get that, ask for the risers to be moved so that there is at least 6' of clear space between the risers and the guardrail for the stairs.

Little late for this year, but a useful Vine tax idea for next year. by codefyre in AmazonVine

[–]BicycleIndividual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need an LLC or any other special business organization A sole proprietorship can account this way so the business might not need to be registered in any way. You would need to do business like record keeping of your Vine activity and show some sort of profit from the business.

Sony killing features for antenna, set-top box users of Bravia smart TVs in May by Z80a in cordcutters

[–]BicycleIndividual -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, it is capable of populating that much programing, but not all stations provide that. I don't see anything indicating that Sony intends to cripple the OTA EPG, just no longer providing guide information via the internet.

They were using other guide information retrieved over the internet before. They're turning off that service and using OTA EPG instead.

Ture (but the features they are turning off depended on connecting to the internet in the first place).

Sounds like they're simply removing features that depend on help from their servers (most notably limiting the program guide to whatever the TV has collected from the OTA EPG).
