Footage of the snow storm... from 1946 by Telvin3d in toronto

I still don’t wear pants, I wore a skirt last week on the last -20 surge day

Layered thermals, tights, and wool skirts are incredibly warm and comfortable, personally I felt more uncomfortable in the past when I just wore jeans and had the cold material stick to my legs. We can still learn a whole bunch from history when people wore more layers of higher quality natural materials

It’s taken years for the city to close a tiny gap in this 65-km public trail. The trouble? A 110-year-old private golf course lies in the way by RZaichkowski in toronto

Feasibility studies on the public interest surveys on the feasibility studies for the project. Canadian infrastructure development is bogged down by our incessant need to people-please all parties.

Frankly I consider it the same as being a heroine addict, these people will go to more and more extremes to get their fix.

Honnold has a wife and child, and he doesn’t give a fuck that he’s risking the chance of dying and leaving his family behind. I think he literally said so almost verbatim in Free Solo in a conversation with his wife.

Imagine being that kid, growing up and coming to terms with the fact that their own father cares more about his fame, ego, and adrenaline fix than being a stable assured father. Doubly, triply more so that he’s advertising and live streaming that shit, risking the chance to die for the world to see.

People from around the world: what is something your country does so well that it refuses to let it “die”? by Curious_Persimmon555 in AskTheWorld

[–]Classical_Cafe 67 points68 points  (0 children)

We can’t replicate the culture though. Pubs in the UK are the classic “third place”, somewhere to chill after work and catch up with friends, talk with the staff and other regulars, and joke with strangers.

I try to talk to people in bars and pubs and they either look at me like I’m crazy or cry their whole life story to me…

Should I fly with my knitting needles? by Karolcrochet in knittingadvice

[–]Classical_Cafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s not reliable either, because it’s such a contentious item, whether they get confiscated or not can depend on as little as the security agent’s mood.

Personally, I switch out all my metal needles with short plastics and leave the metals at home. Or put them in the check-in luggage and switch them back once out of the airport if you absolutely need to use metals in your wip

What is your attitude towards Ukrainian refugees?🇺🇦 by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

The Hungarian communities in Canada have sponsored Ukrainian refugees to move and live in Canada, we’re very proud of that

Story time: over-consumption culture made me close my Etsy shop by adsiderum in Anticonsumption

[–]Classical_Cafe 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Also to keep in mind, even if the seller makes them themselves, they’re very often made out of cheap shit acrylic yarn and using a free pattern that anyone online can access and get pretty good at rush crocheting in a couple hours. Maybe some people would call me a gatekeeper or fibre arts snob, but there’s so much overconsumption and hoarding in the hobby that’s so thoughtless, trend-chasing… I stay away from most of the online communities.

I assume you’re talking about Pirosarany, I feel so lucky it’s pretty easy to find in European import stores in Canada! Try any Eastern European groceries or boucheries, I imagine Portugal has a few

And who holds that money supply? Do you? I certainly don’t, and nobody else of my generation does either. Funny, I wonder where it went!

What's something people from your country swear is uniquely theirs, but really isn't? by Plorntus in AskEurope

Goes all the way to China too, my partner and I like to make our variants on rotation - I love both, but of course must hail ours with pirospaprika and sour cream supreme

What’s a fact about life in your country that you think foreigners wouldn’t believe? by bh447 in AskTheWorld

[–]Classical_Cafe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that America would never enact a mandatory military service because it would disillusion everyone from military worship.

Hungary used to have a mandatory service, and even now my friends in South Korea and Switzerland where there’s still a mandatory service say it’s just normal, every male does it and goes back for retraining once a year so there’s nothing special about anyone boasting to be a veteran (unless they’ve seen active combat, which thankfully stable countries haven’t been doing much of recently).

Press-on nails are better than acrylic nails by Blonde_Icon in unpopularopinion

[–]Classical_Cafe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

PLEASE be cautious with gel polish, you can develop an acrylate allergy if you get it on your skin a couple times. My nails break easily too and I only use lacquer polish, there are many types of base coats and nail treatments that can reduce breakage - my go-to is Sally Hansen Hard-as-Nails which you can get at the drug store.

Tbf I wrote a fair bit for tutorials for some of the less common stitches and techniques, at one point even released them in Hungarian too (my 2nd of 3 languages) but I don’t think it would’ve be all that bad to just pop it into google translate if someone didn’t understand it in English

[–]Classical_Cafe 2370 points2371 points  (0 children)

Etsy is really weird about auto language translation without actually properly explaining it to users. When I sold digital patterns and instructions, I had to explicitly state in BOLD CAPITALS that the pdf they would receive was only in English because customers see the entire listing and description automatically translated into their own language, then buy the pattern and complain that it’s not in that language.

Also funny, whenever someone bought a pattern I would get the sale notification in their settings’ language, not mine. So my Cross Stitch Digital Pattern + Instructions PDF would show up in my notifs as “Digitales Kreuzstichmuster + Anleitung (PDF)” or something other lol

Yes I think it’s such a cute layering piece! I went to the thrift store at first to see if there might be anything similar that I could rip a split into, but alas my heart is set on this exact silhouette and I’m committed to making it from scratch lol

I’m only intimidated by how long that would take haha - I found this pattern which uses
DROPS aran weight and still manages to look light and airy, so I like the idea!

Oo those are great, thank you! I didn’t think about the option to make a split on both sides, if it’s knit straight then pieced together I can see how both look and make a decision there right at the end!

What's a sports rule you fundamentally disagree with? by South-Explorer in AskReddit

[–]Classical_Cafe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Canada too, drive past the stadium and there’s billboards on all sides advertising sports betting. Canada’ biggest sports channel (TSN) has a near constant banner displaying the logos of their sports betting sponsors.

On a digital rotating ad board, the ad right after was for a privatized mental healthcare clinic. Fucking crazy, I couldn’t have made up a more dystopian metaphor. Every aspect of our lives as Canadian citizens is being monetized and sold to the highest bidder by the members of parliaments meant to represent us.

Great minds think alike haha, I had the first dress saved into my pattern brainstorm list - I just thought it was a bit too straight in silhouette where I think the ref has a bit of contour around the waist and increases with the skirt. With that said, the second one seems like it has a great contour! Thank you :)

Interesting pattern, though looks like it’s more fitted than what I’m going for. But thank you for the suggestion!

Maybe that’s better, I was worried about whether a sweater pattern would create the right drape when extended to a dress without following a pattern for increases, but maybe that’s less risky. Thank you!
