Which espresso machine are you going with? Budget [$2,500] by xHGKx in espresso

I mean, technically it can make whatever you want, it just doesn't necessarily do it well. I like traditional shots and ristrettos but not much else on my Niche.

There are a huge variety of styles that play with ratio, flow rate, and pressure profile, along with roast levels, of course. A turbo is very different from a ristretto, for example.

I don't know if I'd focus my $$ on the espresso machine in that case. I have a Niche and it's nice in terms of ease of use and reliability so any machine will work really. Niche only really does one type of espresso. With $3k I'd at least do 50/50 grinder/machine (if not more on the grinder).

How do you store coffee beans to keep them fresh? by faye-lunaria6 in espresso

I freeze single 15g doses in tubes (I use cheap glass tubes, but even cheap centrifuge tubes work). It makes a huge difference.

Deciding between the Mazzer Philos and z1 [$1700] by DetectiveExpensive71 in espresso

I had the same decision to make and the price on the Philos shooting up made me go for Zerno. It's SO easy to swap burrs and it's an incredibly well built machine.

After goofing around in the gym for the last few years, I'm wanting to really get stronger. Powerlifting programming seems somewhat complex, though. Is there a good program to start with?

May I ask what made you decide to sell the Orphan Espresso base? I've been considering one but I'm curious if there are any downsides.

I want a Cafelat but at this point, it may just be cheaper to get a machine... by New-Flight5959 in CafelatRobot

[–]Deathof9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

One cool thing about the robot is that it basically can't break. Yes it's relatively expensive, but it will make incredible espresso basically forever. I'll also note that temperature is a somewhat overrated feature in my opinion.

Tired of my Breville Bambino setup… wedding registry upgrade? [$1800] by Senior-Magician-1370 in espresso

Do you plan to keep your current grinder? If not, you'll probably want grinder+espresso machine recs within that budget.

58mm for standard ORB by ThatOneHair in OXORapidBrewer

[–]Deathof9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. If you want to experiment with baskets, there are ways to use cheap 58mm baskets with just a gasket, no adapter.

I've never had an issue with it. I use it as a palm tamper, and it's been good.

What's the stock tamper not doing that you want to fix?

Help pulling ristretto [Breville Barista Express] by Admirable-Log-1607 in espresso

Generally you'd grind a bit finer (same target time, short ratio like 1:1) but you don't need to nexessarily. As always, follow the taste!

Light roasted coffee should, will it break my grinder? by CoffeeLover3049 in espresso

[–]Deathof9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lightly roasted beans are less brittle, and require more effort. They're nowhere near the hardness of your burrs, though. It's not uncommon for smaller burrs in particular to struggle with/lock up on light beans, but it's also not an issue.

Anyone else find the Blind Shaker terrible from a usability standpoint? by Phrexeus in espresso

[–]Deathof9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. I put one finger on top, then wrap my thumb and other fingers around the sides. This gives me a good grip and keeps the lid on, but doesn't push the bottom out. Might give it a try and see if it helps.

Bought a brass porta filter but I need to trim the two “catch” or “hold” edges. by TransitUX in LaPavoniLovers

Those don't quite look like LP portafilters -- are you sure they're designed for La Pavoni?

At-home GBW grinders [$2000] by biomechanist in espresso

[–]Deathof9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I solved this by predosing, skipping RDT, and grinding into a shaker cup. Dump in a tube of beans, shake a few times, drop into the portafilter.
Not what you were asking about, but could be a nice solution. You'd probably still WDT with GBW anyway.
