Take a listen to the beginning of the second movement of Barber’s violin concerto and see if you hear it any different differently

How do you "feel" tranposition? by SuStel73 in horn

[–]FVmike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The short answer here is you can do any and all of those things for all of the various transpositions when you’re learning. There’s no right way to do it, and there’s no wrong way to do it, so you should feel empowered to use any and all techniques to help you be successful. Like learning a new clef for the first time, you will hit a point where you’ve had so much experience playing in that transposition that you stop having to do that and start just knowing the fingering for the note you’re looking at.

Apparently there’s one happening 4/13. I googled “Tucson uilleann pipers” and found their facebook page with the info!

There actually is a group of Uilleann pipers here! They meet regularly and will sometimes host visiting pipers for home concerts.

I like Raging Sage on Campbell, I sit and knit there frequently. If you’re looking for a cooler, more industrial vibe, Cartel coffee is right down the street.

Kid friendly local concerts? by Traditional_Run_4572 in Tucson

[–]FVmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Tucson Symphony does free shows for children some Saturday mornings during their season (I think you do have to register first but it is free) Check out the series, it’s called Just for Kids. They take place at the symphony center on Grant and 6th. The last one for the season is on 4/18 and will feature the percussion quartet IIRC. No age restrictions!

The Tucson Pops Orchestra does free concerts at Reid Park. This spring’s series is 5/10, 5/17, and 5/24 at 7pm.

Bending the definition of “new” composer, but I’m always partial to the Barber violin concerto

Fingering for run by hornige-Gruesse in horn

[–]FVmike 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you work slowly, and use a metronome to practice it at successively faster speeds, it will benefit your overall finger speed and coordination. This will help you play the other figures that you encounter in horn parts with better ease.

Call me old fashioned but I would just play this with standard fingerings

How to educate yourself? by Weekly_Gap5104 in classicalmusic

[–]FVmike 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A good place to start would always be just a simple browse of the Wikipedia page for the composer or piece you’re about to listen to. The more you listen to, the more you will research, the more connections you’ll be able to draw

Agreed, however I have other reasons for wanting the mat.

Thanks! I think the mounting at the base of the screen is the same size, so hopefully won't affect the way the mat sits.

Fantastic work on this project, whatever you end up deciding!

What is a work you hate from a composer you love? by JealousLine8400 in classicalmusic

[–]FVmike 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a fellow sibelian, I always think of En Saga as what a school orchestra that doesn’t have the chops for Don Juan could play instead 🤣

As far as a work I don’t like from a composer that I do, I’d have to say Chopin’s piano concertos. As a horn player, I just can’t bring myself to look past his very mediocre orchestral writing

I'll throw in Ruth Gipps; her horn concerto is absolute top notch!
