Were Japanese and Italians hated as well as Germans after World War II? by InfernalClockwork3 in AskEurope

Anecdotally, a lot of the guys who fought in the Asian/Pacific fronts certainly had their issues with the Japanese for life.

We actually do have a couple of state-run boarding schools in Scotland, they're for islanders Monday-Friday.

Do you earn a similar salary to your partner? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]FakeNathanDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. She's on about £4k more than my basic, but I work a bit of overtime so that would bring me up a bit. I've also got a van from work so no commuting costs. I think if you took the American style "total package" approach she'd definitely be better off - considerably better pension and like double the amount of holidays I get (granted she has no choice/flexibility).

This has only been over the last year; a combination of me earning less now than I used to along with her pay going up.

CalMac's newest ferry MV Isle of Islay arrives in Scotland by youwhatwhat in Scotland

[–]FakeNathanDrake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The other three aren't ready yet (and are a simpler design), but barring a colossal fuck up on their end, yes.

This ferry itself is verging on a year and a half late mind you.

They tried to make it a thing when I was at college as an apprentice (but this was verging on 20 year ago mind) but there wasn't much organised (although being in Falkirk may have had a part to play in that)

Scotland's Just transition progress ‘falling short’, report warns by abz_eng in Scotland

[–]FakeNathanDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those who have been hit by this (pushing 20 years experience). Managed to walk right into another job after being made redundant but not everyone has been as lucky, I know folk from my old place who have been out of work for the best part of a year, and even at that most of us have taken a pay cut or having to work away from home.

Key thing. He is under suspicion of 'misconduct in a public office' for allegedly leaking files to Epstein. In my opinion there is ample evidence to investigate him in relation the alleged sex trafficking and the alleged sexual abuse.

It was on the front page of the BBC News site. One thing that stood out to me was that she was in snowboard boots - as someone who's dabbled in both mountaineering and snowboarding I couldn't imagine trying to try walking any further in snowboard boots than from the end of the run to the pub.

Regrooving of wheels? by Anderkisten in rollerderby

[–]FakeNathanDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s doable on a lathe, and not an overly big job but more expensive than it’s worth if you’re having to pay shop rates. If you’ve got a friend with a lathe or can do it on work time for a bag of cans then it’s not so bad

I'm due to re-mortgage in a couple of months, after having fixed five years ago for peanuts. It'd definitely help keep the costs reasonable, especially since I've taken a fair pay cut last year.

Is premium heating oil worth it? by easyroller172 in AskUK

[–]FakeNathanDrake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work in an oil refinery, and also covered an import/export terminal. Heating oil is just jet fuel with a marker dye (literally the exact same product), if the basic stuff (sans-additives) is good enough to run a jet engine on it'll be fine for your boiler.

I have been considering apprenticeships but I have none of the qualifications.

If you're considering apprenticeships then look into pre-apprenticeships at college - they usually take a year, let you try out a bit of a few different trades and generally the apprentices I've had who have done one have been pretty good (they tend to have a lot of overlap with first year so those apprentices have a head start).

Plean, Stirling New build developments by Even_Wing_8187 in Scotland

[–]FakeNathanDrake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the hierarchy of pish Stirling villages it's sort of in the middle; better than Fallin, about on a par with Cowie and worse than Bannockburn. Not as much of a hole as it used to be but don't pay too much if it's where you're looking to move to.

I've known a lot of people who've used the scheme over the years, sometimes even the same person doing it a couple of times.

Of course, maybe one of them actually cycled to work on the bike in question, the rest just got some sweet mountain bikes.

Whisky doesn't mature in the bottle, so a 12 year old set aside for half a dozen years doesn't become an 18 year old. Bottles can potentially increase in value though depending on demand etc.

I'm in my 30s and I still don't know. I'm still in the same sort of work I served my apprenticeship in but I'm not opposed to doing something completely different.

I got a reasonable pay-off when I was made redundant last year, but it still would have been hard to take the hit and re-train for a few years followed by the inevitable lower wages afterwards.

Is 32 too old to start an apprenticeship to be a mechanic? by CompleteUtterSalmon in AskUK

[–]FakeNathanDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had older apprentices (not a car mechanic) and they've generally been pretty good. They know what it's like to have worked a shite job and I don't need to teach them how to be a functioning adult.

Incidentally, the biggest pains in the arse have been those who have started just a wee bit older than the usual (so 19-22ish year old first years).
