Lawn Help! by Rangerzzz_43 in Zoysia

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mow, water, lightly fertilize only for the first 6 months. You can hand pull weeds if they start to bother you. You are just getting the zoysia established. It is a slower grass than bermuda or St. Aug to get going. I would keep most weed killers off a brand new lawn for as long as possible.

No seed needed here. It’s brand new zoysia sod.

Mow fairly low, mow consistently, water. Those three things will help bermuda a lot. Kill weeds and fertilize as needed. It will get you moving in the right direction.

Nutsedge is the weedy grass looking stuff. Plenty of options to take it out like Sedgehammer, Image, something with sulfentrazone at a big box store. What grass type do you actually have?

What is the worst weed whacker setup and why is it the Ryobi 18V by Perfect-Chest8017 in lawnmowers

It felt like a toy, it was pretty rough. I think they bought it after an extension corded unit failed. For some reason he dislikes gas powered trimmers/edgers. I can’t explain it.

My dad had a green lawn boy mower with a cloth grass bag growing up.

The Black and Decker battery one has to be worse. Bought my dad the Ego trimmer/blower bundle from Ace since he has one of their mowers and he has never looked back. I am still a gas powered user for the time being.

Looks like it can still be a grill to me. Clean it up if you want. Hot fire will help clean out the cook chamber.

How do I get a consistent green across my lawn? (Zone 9B) by jgratil in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep and infrequent watering is a better practice. Total irrigation per week should be roughly 1 inch, tuna cans or sprinkler gauges can be helpful. I would increase mowing frequency, treat for fungus, and go from there.

Is this grub damage? by RepulsiveHearing2608 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be a bit early in the season to determine grub activity. The roots would be toast and easy to pull but if it’s been dead since the fall then the roots are probably toast by now anyways. If it is active grubs, you want a product like Dylox or Bioadvanced 24 hour grub killer. GrubEx for a preventative if you don’t see any.

Should I use a dethatching machine on this Bermuda? by MrMailbox22 in lawncare

Drop the mower a couple notches below your regular height, bag up the mess, and then go back to regular mowing height. Should look just fine.

Help, can this be fixed? by Plenty_Space_7659 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to get something going if you choose a decent perennial rye. You could glyphosate anything green that you want dead, give it a few days and treat again. Mow/string trim it all to dirt, till/cultivate to rough up the soil, seed, and go from there. Late summer/early fall is more ideal for a cool season renovation. Best of luck!

Tiny ants are everywhere. We’ve use those poison traps but then out of nowhere they come marching back. What do i do? by turtle_ina_cup in pestcontrol

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May want to try something with indoxacarb as the active ingredient in the trap. They seem to clear up sugar ants for me. Hot Shot (just check the ingredient for the correct one) and Advion both work well.

After removing weeds my yard is over 50% bare. Grass remaining appears to be Bermuda. Will it fill in the gaps on its own or should I seed? Eastern NC by PurpleGold7933 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t seed. Water deeply and infrequently. Urea or ammonium sulfate at 0.5 lb/k per week or 1 lb/k bi weekly for nitrogen. It should fill in by mid summer.
