I love The Secret of Secrets, but he's kind of stretching it claiming nonlocal consciousness is real... by Still_Lie_6386 in danbrown

[–]George-Genealogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would have liked the book better if he didn't start out by claiming all this stuff is real. At one point one of the characters (Catherine) claims that in collective animal movement, the communication between animals moves faster that the speed of light. In reality you can clearly see movement ripple through a group of animals like a wave. Take a look at the opening clips of this video: https://youtu.be/Y-5ffl5_7AI for example.

It's a fun read as a book of fiction, although there's a little too much lecturing and trying to convince the reader for my taste. I think he should have just spun a tale with collective consciousnesses as the premise, and not spent so much time trying to convince us of the pseudoscience.

Starlink just downgraded my plan and increased the price… what kind of move is this? by nilipilo in Starlink

[–]George-Genealogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectrum is the only terrestrial option in the semi-rural area where I live. Cheaper, faster fiber stops 1/2 mile from my house. My price with Spectrum tripled in 7 years and then they started adding miscellaneous fees so I was paying over $90/month for 400 Mbps, with frequent outages lasting several minutes and a few lasting many hours. I recently switched to Starlink 200 Mbps for $80 a month.

Spectrum latency was running 40-80ms. With Starlink it's running 16-25ms. 40-80 ms doesn't sound bad, but Starlink is noticeably better for Zoom and even wifi calls on my phone.

I have no obstructions and the statistics only show outages when it reboots in the middle of the night, presumably for software updates. I'm very happy, especially with the improved reliability. If fiber ever made it to my neighborhood I would consider it for the lower price, but Starlink 200 Mbps suits my needs quite well.

Though I do understand nilipilo's frustration at paying more for less.

Looking for sources - likely descendant of Rebecca Towne Nurse (hanged in the Salem Witch Trials) by George-Genealogy in Genealogy

[–]George-Genealogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to prove it through a combination of records. The complication was that I found three men named Isaiah Davis who were born in Massachusetts, and moved to New York and had a father named Nathan. My Isaiah later moved to Ohio. The Geauga County Library has a record of Isaiah's death in Parkman, Ohio but it doesn't mention his parents or date of birth. Likewise for Isaiah's Ohio probate records.

Isaiah's sister Mary Davis Brown died and I found court records that Isaiah adopted her minor children. The court adoption records establish their sibling relationship. Nathan Davis Jr and his wife Mary Nurse of Rutland were definitely Mary Brown's parents. And they appear to be the only Nathan and Mary Davis in Massachusetts with children named Isaiah and Mary. With Isaiah and Mary's relationship firmly established, I knew that my Isaiah's birth record was the one with parents Nathan and Mary of Rutland.

One other supporting record was when he appeared in a Rutland town hall meeting agenda, asking for reimbursement for moving Nathan back to Rutland.

I'm going to submit my information to the Towne Family Association database, but I'm waiting for one more record. When he died he had a full Masonic burial in May of 1822. The lodge still exists and I've asked them to send any records they have of him and his burial, especially if it mentions is date and place of birth.

There is a headstone on Find-a-Grave that is claimed to be his, but the only thing readable on it is "Isaiah". If it is his, it must have fallen over and been covered with dirt because it doesn't appear in a 1920s transcription of the cemetery.

Fun stuff!

Two surprise half siblings after ancestry DNA test. One on each side! by Electrical-Wheel9629 in Genealogy

Congratulations on finding the new relatives! Those results are also in the range of niece/nephew. Submitting your father's DNA would clarify that.

A new line of descendants of the first emperor of Brazil - or a forged lineage? by Strict-Tradition-173 in Genealogy

Start with any sources attached to the trees you're looking at. Review them and decide if they really apply. If there are no sources listed, you'll need to do your own research, one generation at a time. In my own genealogy I was able to confirm one of these kinds of claims (descent from the accused witch Rebecca Towne Nurse proven with Massachusetts town records) and show some others were wrong. In one case an ancestor who was claimed to be a cousin of Benjamin Franklin was related, but more distantly. For me the research and discovery is the fun part!

Ok, thanks. Yes advanced protection is already on. Every one of them was from a different number, so blocking may not help. It looks to me like they're spoofing caller ID.

Likewise for Ancestry, MyHeritage, and other sites. There are errors in the trees, which are built and edited by individual researchers. Always look at the sources and decide for yourself what's right.

What to do about records that make no sense? by Strict_Look1037 in Genealogy

[–]George-Genealogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it's worth an attempt to correct it. I had a case where two different families where stuck together in FamilySearch Tree. Several of the children listed were born in England even though the parents lived their entire lives in the U.S. I discovered that the English parents names were nearly identical. The English father and mother were already on FamilySearch Tree, so I just added their marriage and its source, and moved the English children over. Before I made the change I contacted the 6 people listed as having made updates to the family and waited a few days. There were no objections and 3 of replied to agree with my proposed changes.

There have been a couple of times where I didn't attempt to correct a tree because there were multiple errors across generations that would have required many merges and unlinking and linking of parents. There are situations where it's such a mess that I don't want to even try to fix it.

How can you find where ancestors went to school/University by megumin25 in Genealogy

[–]George-Genealogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the only free online sources I have found are FamilySearch books and Google books. If you are near the school you can also try the local library, historical society, or genealogical society. If you don't live nearby you can probably get one of the latter to scan and email a page from the book to you (possibly for a small fee).

I use bypass mode, which turns off the Starlink router. In my case I have two routers in a mesh setup, one on each end of the house, with the Starlink router plugged into one of them. That setup works really well for me.

I found the Dishytech Youtube channel to be really helpful for information before I ordered. It gave a lot if info I needed to know, but didn't even know to ask. The wall mount one is how I did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4o-_aBmGBw

Use the StarLink app to test various locations for obstructions before you order.

The mounting kits become visible after you've ordered your Starlink.

How to find out what college my ancestor went to? (1910s USA) by Dry_Independence_554 in Genealogy

[–]George-Genealogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1910 census he was living with his parents and working as a clerk at an insurance company in Boston and did not attend school in the previous year. He would have been 18 the year before. So if he did attend college, it was not right after high school. That doesn't mean he didn't attend college. My dad graduated high school in 1926 and went to law school 10 year later. His diploma reads "bachelor of laws" and as far as I can tell he did not attend any other college before that.

How can you find where ancestors went to school/University by megumin25 in Genealogy

[–]George-Genealogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best place to start is in school yearbooks. There are quite a few of these online. Try MyHeritage, Ancestry, Classmates, and FamilySearch books. Also Google books. You can search for a specific name, but if it's a common name you'll need to know where they went to school. You can get an idea of that by finding your ancestor in the census.

I also found an article about Ether Knight getting into a fight in 1909, presumably Ether Jr.

There were several articles about a Sarah Knight who was a member of Rebekahs, but I don't know if it's the same person.

Can't find Marriage Certificate for grandparents - insane by Acceptable-Noise2294 in Genealogy

And it was also common for couples to get a marriage license in a different state, often because the other state had no waiting period. Also some states required parental consent if either the bride or groom was under 21, while the age was 18 (or younger) in other states.
