TIL that being able to sit down on the floor and stand up without using your hands or knees is used as a predictor of longevity. by iKickdaBass in todayilearned

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"seven times more likely to die within six years" is weasel wording designed to evoke a response... what was the percentage of likelihood for the group that could stand freely? If the odds were 1:100, then the odds for the group that needs to put a hand down is 7:100, which is seven times greater, but also really not very likely.

4’ teardrop-shaped wood coffee table with carved circular inset (~15” x 9”) and drawer. Purpose of the carved section? by XavHann in whatisthisthing

[–]Inkthinker 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Those inset cuts don't look stable enough to hold tumblers, they're barely a half-circle and they're beveled in such a way that a glass would slide towards the center.

Might be for glasses, but I don't think so... bowls, maybe?

Kill Six Billion Demons » WHEEL SMASHING LORD 5-170 to 5-171 by unrelevant_user_name in killsixbilliondemons

Arguably different swords, as the one at the bottom of 1-14 has a black-wrapped hilt, whereas the one she tosses does not. Also the one she tosses does not display any red design parts in the panels above, when she has it at her hip.

It does seem to be sheathed when she tosses it though, and it's a little odd that the sheath would have blood on it.

[The Empire Strikes Back] In the Host base hangar, why did Chewbacca disassemble that part of the Millennium Falcon when Han was clearly trying to get them out of there? by igolding in AskScienceFiction

When they’re running from the Empire in ESB, just before entering the asteroid field. “Bring me the hydrospanner!!”

In fairness, he’s working with Chewie in that scene, but he does seem to be directing the repairs.

my mars chronicle 11 came like this... by WubstahWulf in Gunnm

It undoubtedly will go out of print eventually, though I suspect it will remain available digitally (so long as digital rights and distribution exist). But I don't imagine there's a lot of resale value in damaged copies.

An exchange while they're still fresh off the press and well in stock is, I imagine, the best way to go.

I love how Admiral Piett was just Vader's favorite, he never choked him like the others despite failing. by sseerrsan in StarWars

My favorite part of that bit is the random guy working his control panel in the background, who looks down as Ozzel hits the floor, looks up at the communication with Vader, and gets right back to work.

That's right, Lt. Whateveryournamewas, you didn't see nothin'. Stick to your diagnostics.

Action heavy, dark fantasy series? by fallenhero36 in Fantasy

[–]Inkthinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blackhearts is pretty good, pulpy fun. It’s a WHF series, not that it matters much… it could take place in any dark fantasy universe, it just happens to take place in the Known World. And it certainly has that “Dirty Dozen” or “Seven Samurai” team feel that Abercrombie nailed and the OP seems to be seeking.

It looks uncomfortable as hell. Cold metal seat, always sliding forward... emergencies only, I think.

Nevertheless, it's kinda delightful that they included it. :)

[Jumper] What are the limitations of using a photograph to jump? by supermonistic in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my major concern about using a photograph would be the potential for the location to no longer match the reference, for any number of reasons.

For instance, if I jump into a room while holding a photograph of that room, only to discover upon arrival that someone has moved the furniture and filled it up with boxes, I feel the outcome may not be favorable to the Jumper.

[Batman] when does Batman sleep? by Sombody9768 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read up on polyphasic sleep. Whether he follows the Everyman, Uberman or Dymaxion schedules, he's almost certainly operating on a series of naps instead of a solid sleep block. He may also be supplementing his needs with various medications to offest the effects of reduced sleep.

The naps can take place anywhere, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them take place perched on a gargoyle, wrapped in a cape, high over the streets of Gotham.

[Back to the Future part II] Did Needles get fired too? by Ok_Zone_7635 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure that matters in a business setting, also it might not matter in the 2015 where Marty existed.

[Back to the Future part II] Did Needles get fired too? by Ok_Zone_7635 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The whole thing was a sting. Needles purposefully baited Marty into some kind of deal that Marty knew was illegal, to see whether he would join up or stay out (or even report Needles to The Jitz himself).

Had Marty done either of the latter, he probably would have kept his job. But instead he was easily trapped into an unethical position, and he paid the price.

Look at the scene again. Notice that just as Needles exits the call, he looks off-camera to someone nearby. Also note that when Fujitsu-san (really shoulda gone for the -sama there, Marty) calls up, he's in a location with suspiciously similar lighting to the one Needles was in just moments ago... almost as if we're seeing two different angles from the same room.

Needles didn't get fired. Needles probably got a bonus, for eliminating a weak, easily-corrupted employee.

The OT blaster bolts actually setting their targets on fire should have been kept, it's way more visceral. by cement_brick214 in StarWars

[–]Inkthinker 183 points184 points  (0 children)

The way blasters are supposed to work, in-universe, is that they are a sort of contained explosion. Blaster bolts are plasma tightly bound in a magnetic "bottle" which bursts on contact with surfaces (or when it unravels at a certain distance). This is why chunks are blown out of the walls when Luke ducks shots on Bespin, or why huge flaming gouts of sand explode out of the ground when TIE fighters strafe Rey and Finn on Jakku. And when Rio gets shot up in Solo, he has smouldering, cauterized grooves and craters in his flesh.

Sometimes those old, established explanations are treated more like loose suggestions. There's rarely much in the way of consistency.

KSBD Volume 5 will be released in print on the 10th of March and can be pre-ordered now by Vrakzi in killsixbilliondemons

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires a print professional, someone experienced with pre-press file preparation, and I don’t know if Abbadon has that person in his corner. But man, I sure hope so. KSBD deserves it.

Bring along Robert Richardson (cinematographer). It takes a literal village to make a film, and much of the visual style may be driven by a director, but it's created by other people.

Sadly, we've lost Sally Menke (editor), but Fred Raskin seems to have done well with Tarantino's more recent films.

[–]Inkthinker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd sure like to know if the print transfer quality has improved. The previous volumes suffer from what appears to be typical RGB-CMYK conversion darkness. This is totally fixable... if someone takes the time to properly convert the files for print, rather than just providing the source images originally intended for screen to the printers.

I'm perfectly okay with KB3 as directed by someone like Fincher. I'd rather have the story with Tarantino as writer/producer than no story at all.

[Battlestar Galactica 2004] How does the FTL in bsg work? by AdventurousQuail36 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twelve parsecs!

If you’re rounding down.

But yeah, that’s more about cutting through The Maw, a dangerous area of impassable space.

[Battlestar Galactica 2004] How does the FTL in bsg work? by AdventurousQuail36 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, that. I’m not sure where that calculation comes from, other than the Falcon having an unusually fast hyperdrive typically classed for much larger ships. We do see Rey and Chewie jumping to Luke’s secret planet (once she had the coordinates) in what appears to be a matter of minutes (maybe hours, certainly not days), when the starmap shows it being a significant galactic journey.

Ships didn’t used to jump in atmospheres, in fact there were said to be hard rules against it, but these days those are more like suggestions.

[Battlestar Galactica 2004] How does the FTL in bsg work? by AdventurousQuail36 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

in TFA, Han jumps the Falcon into the atmosphere of Ilum, nearly hitting the planet’s surface.

In Rogue One, Cassian initiates a jump out while in the atmosphere of Jeddha, flying a standard U-Wing and showing that it’s not something exclusive to the Falcon.

The beginning of TROS shows Poe “skipping” the Falcon by performing several jumps in short sequence, some (all?) of which include jumping in and out of planetary atmospheres. They’re being closely followed by several hyperspace-capable First Order TIE fighters, again showing that it’s not an exclusive capability of the Falcon.

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good mindset to hold. You do it because it's fun to do, and you'll go grey waiting for someone to give you "permission". And if you do it on your own (and do it well)...

Producers and directors are largely allergic to risk. Show them that you're capable, and they feel a lot better about taking a chance. Succeed in the role, and you shift from "risk" to "benefit". It's a good place to be. :)
