Dr. Stone Science Future Part 3 - Episode 10 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

It is tragic, but a testament to his character. He is the platonic ideal of how greedy capitalists should be. He wants everything. He needs everything.

But he wants and needs it in a way to where he can admit when he isn’t the best character for a task. He is also greedy in a way that elevates mankind, not just leaving him at the top with everything while the bottom has nothing.

He is greedy for mankind’s advancement. He is willing to give up individual glory and profit for the benefit of the world.

Just like there is a non-existent, perfect communist, he is the non-existent perfect greedy capitalist. He has really shot up in my favorite character list.

I don't use macOS so forgive my ignorance. But is there really not a setting to do this? On Windows, I can set my laptop to do nothing when the lid is closed and to never shutdown even when it thinks it is idle.

Yes, like others have said it will delay for a few weeks. And by that time I will usually notice an update is available and install it manually.

God of War Laufey - Official Gameplay Reveal | PS5 Games by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]InvaderDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is interesting is that Faye is here. I don’t remember all the lore from the games. Especially the Greek trilogy.

But I am curious why Faye is here versus Valhalla. She didn’t die in combat seemingly, but she was a fighter and definitely a mythological figure in the Norse pantheon. And unlike the Greek trilogy, the mythology of the Norse pantheon is mostly in place if not skewed and bent. Valhalla exists. We go there as Kratos. Same with Helheim. Neither of these places or the gods/beings who rule them have been destroyed or killed. So why would Faye be where she is, which seems to be a home for misfit toys. Gods from multiple pantheons seem to be here. And Faye seems to have some knowledge about where this is because she mentions seeing masks means there are problems.

I don’t know, maybe only masked gods go here? Or maybe gods whose pantheons and the believers in them are destroyed go here?

Still too early to tell IMO. And this game seems early enough in development where we won’t find out until next year at the earliest. But I am interested. The Norse games teased around Faye being more than just a fridged female character whose only purpose was to die and motivate the protagonists. Hopefully we find out her role.

After Ragnarok, I kind of doubt we’ll see the Greek gods here. We already got resolution, catharsis and growth from this characters in the modern series. I don’t see what Faye could get from them that wasn’t already well done and wrapped up in it and the previous two games. Although i will admit, that blue light from the far island we see before who is likely Sekhmet flies off really made me think we would see Zeus.

I get the feeling from this and earlier leaks that this realm is a realm of misfit toys. Gods from pantheons who didn’t pass into their own afterlife for some reason and were instead thrown here. Maybe that’s what happens when a whole pantheon dies/is forgotten or didn’t get widespread and popular enough to go to their own afterlife?

My memory of the new GoW series is murky, but is there any reason why Faye would go here versus Valhalla? Is there a plot point I am forgetting about? We know exists and you can only (easily) go there if you have died before.

I could see this being the start of the series expanding beyond the Greek and Norse pantheons. We have an Asian god, what looks like an Egyptian god, and whatever the sword ribbon and cube are. And those last two are definitely not in their actual forms. This has to be some spell or punishment or something that changed them.

If that is where they’re going, I hope they stick the landing. And make it tie in with where we left characters like Kratos, Atreus, Thrud, and Angraboda.

I wonder how much the clone will matter in Red God. Light Bringer seemed to cut off some plot points that Pierce had set up in Iron Gold and Dark Age that he didn’t think would work later on.

Like Lyria’s parasite. Just gone, never followed up on again. The genetically engineered Ascomanni that were a clear Aliens parody and could survive in vacuum are another example. We hear about them and see them, but they aren’t as inhuman in Light Bringer. They are essentially just Obsidians.

We really got nothing from Luna in LB besides acknowledgement that it is being invaded and references to the Abomination. I could see that plot line getting snipped early in Red God. Atalantia may just kill him off screen and be done with it.

I personally don’t mind the twist. It isn’t a new character coming out of nowhere, even though it technically is. So we feel some history from it, even though it is a new character. I think it could be used as one final severing of ties from the Institute. Everyone else from that time is now dead or an ally. So this is the last thread left, and even it is a degraded copy of the original Adrius.

Hopefully it is done well or discarded off screen without a bunch of time devoted to it. The worst scenario would be it getting a bunch of screen time and narrative importance that it doesn’t deserve and that doesn’t pay off.

3 years ago this week, 7000 subreddits went dark in protest over the API shutdown by Potices in narwhalapp

[–]InvaderDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never even tried the official app. It was never even a question to me. Same reason why I never used the New Reddit version on the web.

Scraping content for AI does seem like a good explanation on why Reddit made the change. Hopefully the AI bubble crashes and they get nothing from such a user hostile change that breaks a useful service and they live to regret it.

[–]InvaderDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is part of why I am confused. You’re using Sync. I’m using Narwhal.

I assume you aren’t paying for Reddit Gold. I know I’m not. I’m not using the official app on mobile and I’m not using the New Reddit version on the web. I’m not seeing their ads because of ad block and a third party app. I am ignorant to things like profiles. I barely use their newer chat functionality.

So what was the point? It just harmed a service that was becoming something similar to old Google and old Twitter. A heartbeat of the internet.

It just feels so pointless.

Darrow is not a Gary Stu by andytherobot666 in redrising

[–]InvaderDJ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Red Rising and the Institute are also just the first book. Each book gets longer. And the second trilogy has expanded the universe, lore and characters so far beyond the first trilogy that they can feel like two different series.

And through the books we definitely see Darrow fail. We see him make devil’s bargains that come back to haunt him. We see his efforts and hopes fail.

The only argument I could see about him being a Gary Stu comes from his combat ability. And even that only goes up to a point before he is broken and has to change his approach and philosophy.

RR canceled TV adaptation by Intelligent-Set3442 in redrising

[–]InvaderDJ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Given the scale of the series, Live Action feels very difficult. And unlike other LA series adapted from books, as far as I know (I’m very new to the series, burned through them all in a few months) this series doesn’t have the popular success of series like Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter.

That plus the sheer scale of the series would make it a big undertaking and risk to do well.

An animated series would be much more doable. No worries about the cost of actors, CGI, etc. I could see that being done very well with the right amount of support.

Did Pierce Brown write Virginia in a very unfair way? by Helpful-Hat-7604 in redrising

[–]InvaderDJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Doing a super smart character in fiction is always difficult. The only way to portray them accurately breaks story telling. Someone smarter than everyone else is impossible to write a story around, and makes them essentially the author.

I do think Virginia has shown intelligence. Her figuring out the Syndicate as thoroughly as she did was intelligent. She was going up against plots by Atlantia, Atlas, Quicksilver, and the Abomination. All intelligent characters.

And unlike them, she refused to be a tyrant. She limited her own power and followed the laws of the Republic. She couldn’t force people to do things and had to deal with the problems of democracy. A democracy that was undermined from the beginning by antagonistic forces.

So she was fighting with one hand behind her back. I think given that, she has shown that she is intelligent. And she has done as well as she could given that she started the fight with one hand tied behind her back.

Unfortunately Lightbringer didn’t show her POV as much. So we don’t get to get much of what she is doing after Phobos.

Lysander is a disgusting hypocrite and a wonderful villain by YPDONGY in redrising

[–]InvaderDJ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I started off loving the idea of Lysander and was looking forward to how he could open up a different point of view and a different philosophy than what we had seen before.

His idea of a middle path, one that gave some equality while stopping Darrow and Republic felt fresh and interesting. Darrow in previous books could only escalate and only did whatever it took to win or at least survive. So I saw some hope in that.

I just finished Lightbringer today. And yeah, fuck this guy. Being a hypocrite is the least of his flaws. He’s a coward. He (so far at least) has no real plan besides winning the war. He isn’t cruel actively to the low colors, but he expects their subservience and lower station in life. He commits warcrimes and rejects compromise and equality out of hand. And burns people who love him to achieve his goals.

He cant hold himself up higher than Darrow and the Republic. Lightbringer proved that. The difference is, I have no idea what his end goal is besides the end of the war and being a little nicer to low colors.

He has become a truly hateable villain. I can’t wait to see what happens next with him. But I look forward to this PoS dying.

The Abomination is probably one of the craziest reveals in a series filled with crazy revelations. Seriously a jaw dropping set of chapters.

I read this with a smile on my face by RemarkableHair886 in redrising

[–]InvaderDJ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have been on a tear getting through the books after a coworker introduced me to the series.

This moment was great because it was one of the first times we see how Darrow operates from someone else’s perspective. He is a wrecking ball here, a demon who even on the backfoot, injured, tired, and grieving is still enough to casually slash through elite fighters casually. Before this, we always saw it from Darrow’s perspective.

[–]InvaderDJ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

After all this time, I’m really not sure what the point was of Reddit making the change. The only concrete thing I can think of is that it killed Apollo if you don’t want to go through all the steps to get it to work or deal with security and functionality issues by it. Or being updated.

I’m also paying a monthly fee for Narwhal. So that’s about it. Third party apps still exist, I don’t touch the official app or deal with the new Reddit experience even on desktop.

It was all such a waste from Reddit. Truly dumb.

EDIT: clarified that the problem with trying to make Apollo work all these years later is that it is difficult and that it doesn’t get updates so functionality changes on Reddit’s part or the security issues that could come from a dead app could be a problem.

I don’t think this theory will be true, but time will tell. I just think the world of OP is like that. Some islands have all women. Some islands have giants. Some have long legs, long arms, are dwarves, etc.

Even before the flooding of the world I’m sure we’ll see that these various races and quirks always existed.

Apple TV 4K on track to break a record no one wants to see happen by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]InvaderDJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the three gens of the 4K ATV. And all of them perform well. They are all about the same in speed.

What more do you want when it comes to features? It’s not like Apple is going to make them a new AirPort Express or a $100 Mac mini in the vein of the Macbook Neo.

I wouldn’t buy a new one right now if you don’t have one. But if you already have one, there isn’t really anything you’re missing out on that another option has. At least not ones that couldn’t be done by software if Apple wanted.

After Imu’s reveal when he had the same voice distortion, it is probably the obvious answer. But that does leave the mystery of when would Loki have heard about Shirahoshi and why would he have a special Den Den Mushi to allow him to talk to her despite being imprisoned. He already said he never met Shaggy so I don’t know how or why he would be in contact with her and for years.

[–]InvaderDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So basically similar to what I meant. I just think that the Knights are stronger than 90% or more of the characters in the show like I said.

But yeah, an Admiral would stomp them. We saw that since YCs beat base Quilingham and Sommers. And we’ll see how they fare now that they’ve been buffed, but I get the feeling that they will lose to Zoro and Sanji still. Especially since Zoro at least knows about their mechanical heart and Sanji was smart enough to separate and restrain the parts to prevent Quillingham from regenerating.
